MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated DbGate user (PR:L) able to reach the API and control the comment.text or script.schedule argument of the JSON Runner / scheduler feature - i.e., a user who can create or edit a runner/scheduled script's comment or schedule fields. Exploitation is remote and needs no user interaction, but is limited to versions up to 7.2.5-beta.5 (fixed in 7.2.5-beta.6) and gated by DbGate's permission model. The condition is that unsanitized comment/schedule text is passed to ScriptWriter and executed; deployments where untrusted or lower-privilege accounts can submit these fields are most exposed. |
| Impact | This is CVE-2026-97225, a CWE-94 code-injection flaw in DbGate's JSON Runner (packages/api/src/controllers/runners.js) affecting versions up to 7.2.5-beta.5. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, base 5.3, E:X) treats this as network-reachable and authenticated (PR:L) with only LOW impact across all three dimensions. I DISPUTE the low impact rating: the source-code evidence shows user-controlled comment.text and @schedule text is embedded into a generated JavaScript script that DbGate then executes server-side, and the patch specifically escapes line terminators and '@' characters so attacker text can no longer break out of a '//' comment to inject executable code or forge '// @require dbgate-plugin-evil' / '// @schedule' directives. Successful breakout yields arbitrary JS execution as the DbGate API process (effectively RCE), which realistically warrants HIGH confidentiality/integrity/availability - so I assess ~8.8 (3.1) rather than 5.3, while noting VulDB likely scored impact low because DbGate's runner executes user scripts by design and this is partly a lower-privilege path to that capability. On exploitation signals: no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score provided, and no public exploit code is referenced (only VulDB entries and vendor patch links) - so there is no evidence of active exploitation. Net: a genuine authenticated code-execution issue in a niche product; not a widespread emergency, but priority for any environment running DbGate with multiple/untrusted users. The disagreement between the raw 5.3 score and the RCE-class mechanism should be verified against the vendor advisory (GHSA-rfx7-cmmf-7ff7 referenced in the patch). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated low-privilege DbGate user supplies crafted comment text or a schedule value containing a line terminator (e.g. \n or U+2028) followed by JavaScript, or an '@require'/'@schedule' directive substring. When DbGate's ScriptWriter generates the runner script and the API executes it, the injected content breaks out of the '//' comment line and runs as code - or loads an attacker-named plugin - executing on the DbGate server. No public proof-of-concept is referenced at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 24, 2026
Code injection in DbGate (a web-based database GUI) versions up to 7.2.5-beta.5 lets an authenticated user who can create or edit a JSON Runner or scheduled script inject text into the comment.text or script.schedule fields that escapes the generator's // comment wrapper and reconstitutes a // @require <module> or // @schedule directive, causing the server to load and execute attacker-supplied code. The flaw is remote, requires low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction, and is limited to unpatched releases; it is fixed by upgrading to 7.2.5-beta.6 (upstream commit 70e7b6b58e464d7a015ba16e8d7574b420ee4877, PR #1527). There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the EPSS-style exposure is mitigated mainly by the requirement for an authenticated account with runner-editing rights. This issue is explicitly distinct from CVE-2026-47668.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to DbGate 7.2.5-beta.6 (release https://github.com/dbgate/dbgate/releases/tag/v7.2.5-beta.6); anyone building from source should apply upstream commit 70e7b6b58e464d7a015ba16e8d7574b420ee4877 (PR https://github.com/dbgate/dbgate/pull/1527), which anchors the // @require and // @schedule regexes to true line starts in runners.js and scheduler.js and makes ScriptWriter escape every @ and neutralize LF/CR/U+2028/U+2029 line terminators in comment and schedule text. Because exploitation requires an authenticated user with the ability to create or edit runner/scheduled-script comment and schedule fields, immediate compensating controls are to restrict runner-creation/editing permissions to trusted administrators and to treat any non-privileged account that can reach the API as potentially exploitable; audit existing runner and scheduled-script definitions for embedded @require or @schedule text or unusual line-terminator characters before or after patching, since a successfully injected directive may already have loaded a plugin (trade-off: auditing is read-only and safe). Additionally, restrict the DbGate server process's ability to install or load arbitrary node modules (for example, lock down the plugin directory, pin an allow-list of plugins, and block outbound access to package registries from the DbGate host) so an injected @require cannot pull a malicious plugin - this does not fix the injection itself and may break legitimate plugin installation. Network-level restriction of the DbGate API to trusted networks or a reverse-proxy allow-list reduces exposure but does not remediate the flaw for legitimate authenticated users. No vendor workaround beyond upgrading is documented in the available references; the provided CVSS 4.0 score (5.3, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L) is lower than our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), so prioritize patching accordingly.

Technical ContextAI · show details
DbGate is a Node.js/Electron database client whose API server package (packages/api) exposes controllers such as runners.js and scheduler.js for the JSON Runner feature. Those controllers scan the generated JavaScript emitted for a runner script with regular expressions looking for directives (// @require <module> and // @schedule <expr>); the matched module name is then loaded and executed, giving the directive-scanning logic the effective power of a code loader. The root cause is CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code): user-controlled strings - the JSON script's comment.text and its script.schedule - were interpolated into // ... comment lines by ScriptWriter (packages/tools/src/ScriptWriter.ts) without neutralizing JavaScript line terminators (LF, CR, U+2028, U+2029) or the @ character. Because the directive regexes were unanchored (they allowed // @require to appear mid-line), an attacker could place something like sometext // @require dbgate-plugin-evil inside a comment, or use U+2028/U+2029 to break out of the commented region entirely, and thereby smuggle a directive that the runner/scheduler would treat as legitimate generated code. The patch hardens both sides: the directive regexes are anchored to a true line start with the zero-width multiline ^ (tolerating CRLF and a leading BOM) and the writer escapes every @ and converts all line terminators so user text can never reconstruct a directive. Per the CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:n/a:dbgate:*), all DbGate builds before the 7.2.5-beta.6 fix are affected; note the fix commit also references advisory GHSA-rfx7-cmmf-7ff7.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in DbGate up to 7.2.5-beta.5. This affects an unknown function of the file packages/api/src/controllers/runners.js of the component JSON Runner. Executing a manipulation of the argument comment.text/script.schedule can lead to code injection. The attack may be performed from remote. Upgrading to version 7.2.5-beta.6 mitigates this issue. This patch is called 70e7b6b58e464d7a015ba16e8d7574b420ee4877. Upgrading the affected component is advised. This issue is distinct from CVE-2026-47668.
