| Exploitation Conditions | The SRX device MUST be configured for AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) - this is a non-default feature, so devices without ADVPN are not affected. Additionally, the attacker must already be a trusted participant in the VPN: either having acquired the ADVPN pre-shared secret to impersonate a peer, or having compromised an existing legitimate peer. These two preconditions (ADVPN enabled + peer trust/PSK possession) are the primary limiting factors and are why the vendor rates attack complexity high (AC:H); they substantially reduce real-world exploitability despite the network attack vector and critical impact. Affected: Junos OS on SRX Series in all versions before 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4 before 23.4R2-S7, 24.2 before 24.2R2-S4, 24.4 before 24.4R2-S3, 25.2 before 25.2R2, and 25.4 before 25.4R1-S3. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely high-severity issue but NOT a drop-everything emergency, and the raw 9.2 CVSS 4.0 score overstates the realistic threat. The vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) yields CRITICAL, but the vendor's choice of PR:N conflicts with the description, which explicitly states the attacker must either acquire the pre-shared secret to impersonate a peer or compromise an existing ADVPN peer - a meaningful authentication/trust precondition the vendor instead reflected via AC:H ('considerably difficult'). The impact side is fully justified: VC:H/VI:H/VA:H corresponds to buffer-overflow-driven remote code execution and complete device takeover. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net assessment: real priority for any SRX fleet running ADVPN because of the total-compromise impact, but the trust/PSK prerequisite and high attack complexity make opportunistic mass exploitation unlikely; prioritize patching ADVPN-configured SRX devices while treating widespread internet-wide exploitation as improbable absent a POC or KEV entry. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has either stolen an ADVPN pre-shared secret or already compromised a legitimate spoke/peer establishes a VPN session to a vulnerable SRX device configured for AutoDiscovery VPN and sends IKE/ADVPN protocol messages containing one or more specifically malformed attributes. The malformed input triggers a buffer overflow in the VPN daemon, yielding remote code execution and complete control of the firewall. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, and the required peer-trust foothold makes this a targeted rather than spray-and-pray attack. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 14, 2026
Remote code execution in Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series devices configured for AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) can let an attacker who already is a trusted ADVPN peer take complete control of the device via malformed ADVPN attributes that trigger a buffer overflow. Exploitation requires the attacker either to possess the ADVPN pre-shared secret to impersonate a peer or to have compromised a legitimate peer, and the independent assessment rates this as high severity but not an emergency despite the 9.2 CVSS 4.0 score. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Remote code execution in Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series firewalls lets an attacker who is already positioned as an AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) peer take complete control of the device by sending a VPN message carrying one or more specially malformed attributes that overflow a buffer in the VPN daemon. The exposure is heavily gated: ADVPN is not a default configuration, and the attacker must first obtain the VPN shared secret or have compromised an existing peer, which is why the vendor assigns high attack complexity (AC:H) despite an 8.1 High base score. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no CISA KEV designation, but Juniper has published fixed maintenance releases for every affected train, so patching removes the risk outright.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to the fixed Junos OS releases: 23.2R2-S7.7 or later in the 23.2 branch, 23.4R2-S7 or later, 24.2R2-S4 or later, 24.4R2-S3 or later, 25.2R2 or later, or 25.4R1-S3 or later. If immediate升级 is not possible, disable AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) on SRX devices where it is not required; this removes the vulnerable attack surface but disables dynamic VPN functionality and may affect branch-to-branch connectivity. For devices that must keep ADVPN enabled, restrict ADVPN peer IP addresses to known trusted peers where operationally feasible, rotate the ADVPN pre-shared secret if compromise is suspected, and monitor for malformed ADVPN attributes or unexpected VPN daemon crashes that could indicate exploitation attempts. Consult the vendor advisory at https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112173 for complete upgrade and mitigation guidance. Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is an improper validation of syntactic correctness of input (CWE-1286) in the VPN daemon that handles AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) peer messages on Juniper Networks Junos OS for SRX Series. When an SRX device configured for ADVPN receives a peer message containing one or more specifically malformed attributes, the daemon fails to validate the syntactic structure correctly, causing a buffer overflow that can lead to remote code execution and full device compromise. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected Junos OS product family, with SRX Series platforms specifically affected. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector lists AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact to the vulnerable system, but the independent assessment uses CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, reflecting the practical requirement that the attacker be an authenticated or otherwise trusted ADVPN peer; this prerequisite and the need for ADVPN to be enabled are what drive the high attack complexity.

4DescriptionCVE.org
An Improper Validation of Syntactic Correctness of Input vulnerability in the VPN daemon of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series allows an authenticated, network-based attacker to take complete control of the device.
If an SRX device configured for AutoDiscovery VPN (ADVPN) receives a message from a peer that contains one or more specifically malformed attributes, this will cause a buffer overflow, which can allow remote code execution and therefore allow an attacker to take complete control of the device. To be able to carry out this attack an attacker must either have acquired the shared secret to impersonate a peer or have compromised an existing one, so this attack is considerably difficult.
This issue affects Junos OS on SRX Series:
- All versions before 23.2R2-S7.7;
- from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S7;
- from 24.2 before 24.2R2-S4;
- from 24.4 before 24.4R2-S3;
- from 25.2 before 25.2R2;
- from 25.4 before 25.4R1-S3.
Executive ViewAI
Juniper Junos OS on SRX Series devices configured for ADVPN contains a critical remote code execution flaw that could allow a trusted ADVPN peer, or an attacker with the ADVPN pre-shared secret or a compromised legitimate peer, to take full control of the security gateway. Organizations relying on these SRX devices for VPN and perimeter security are exposed to potential network compromise, traffic interception, and downstream system access. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so leadership should prioritize device inventory, temporary mitigations, and tracking Juniper for a fixed Junos OS release.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations include disabling ADVPN if not required, restricting ADVPN peer access to known IPs, rotating pre-shared secrets, segmenting SRX devices, monitoring for malformed ADVPN attributes, and applying vendor workarounds when available.
