| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target Junos OS / Junos OS Evolved device to have an established external BGP (eBGP) session with the attacker-controlled peer AND to have BMP (BGP Monitoring Protocol) route monitoring configured. The attacker must be, or must compromise, a configured external BGP neighbor - the router must already be set up to peer with the attacker, which is the primary limiting factor and means it is not exploitable by arbitrary internet hosts. Routers not running BMP route monitoring, or with no external BGP neighbors, are not exposed. No additional authentication or user interaction is needed once the peering relationship exists. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk case, but its exploitability is gated by a meaningful precondition. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) rates it network-reachable with no privileges and no user interaction, and the VC:H/VI:H/VA:H impact plus the CWE-121 stack overflow yielding arbitrary command execution as root justify the 9.3 score. However, the description states the attacker must be 'a configured external BGP neighbor' - the target must already be configured to peer with the attacker - so this is not internet-wide unauthenticated exploitation but exploitation from within an established eBGP trust relationship, and only when BMP route monitoring is in use. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public exploit was provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the realistic threat is a compromised or malicious BGP peer rather than opportunistic mass scanning. The PR:N rating reflects CVSS semantics (no account on the device) but should be read alongside the peering prerequisite, which materially narrows the attack surface. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or compromises a device that is a configured external BGP neighbor of a vulnerable Junos router sends crafted BMP (BGP Monitoring Protocol) route-monitoring data. The malformed data overflows a stack buffer in the routing protocol daemon (rpd), allowing arbitrary commands to execute with root privileges on the router. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Remote code execution with root privileges on Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved is possible when the routing protocol daemon (rpd) processes crafted BMP route monitoring messages from a configured external BGP neighbor. Exploitation requires the target device to have an established external BGP (eBGP) session with the attacker-controlled peer and BMP route monitoring enabled; routers without BMP configured or without eBGP peers are not exposed. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available; upgrade to the fixed versions listed in Juniper advisory JSA112187. For Junos OS: 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3, 26.2R1-S2. For Junos OS Evolved: 23.2R2-S7.7-EVO, 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO, 26.2R1-S2-EVO, 25.2X100-D35-EVO, and 25.4X300-D40-EVO. If immediate upgrade is not possible, as a compensating control, disable BMP route monitoring on the device if it is not operationally required; this removes the attack vector but also eliminates the monitoring visibility that BMP provides. Additionally, restrict external BGP peering to trusted neighbors only, and ensure that any eBGP session is authenticated (e.g., with TCP-MD5 or BGPsec) to prevent unauthorized peers from establishing a session; this does not fix the underlying flaw but reduces the attack surface. Note that disabling BMP or restricting peers may affect network monitoring and routing policies.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. BGP Monitoring Protocol (BMP) is used to monitor BGP sessions by streaming route information to a monitoring station; rpd handles these messages. The flaw occurs when rpd parses BMP route monitoring messages, allowing a stack buffer to be overwritten. Because rpd runs with root privileges, successful overflow leads to arbitrary command execution as root. The affected CPEs are cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os and cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os_evolved. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) indicates the attack is network-based, low complexity, and requires no privileges or user interaction, though the attacker must be a configured external BGP neighbor. The independent assessment confirms a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) and notes that exploitability is gated by the requirement for an established eBGP session and active BMP configuration.

3DescriptionCVE.org
A Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows a configured external BGP neighbor to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges via BMP route monitoring.
Executive ViewAI
Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved are affected by a critical remote code execution vulnerability that could give an attacker root control of routers configured for external routing peering and route-monitoring telemetry, potentially disrupting or manipulating network traffic. Organizations using these platforms in core or edge routing roles should treat this as a priority because a compromise could cause widespread outages, traffic interception, or loss of network integrity. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and a patch is available per vendor advisory.
