Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to control or influence the contents of a directory consumed by CDK asset bundling so that a symbolic link resolving to a file outside the asset tree is present, and requires a developer or CI pipeline to actually run the bundling/synth step (UI:P). Limiting factors: the attack vector is local (AV:L) - it affects the build host, not a deployed/running application - and it depends on CDK following symlinks during bundling output handling; environments that only build from trusted, controlled sources face substantially lower risk. The fix introduces SymlinkFollowMode.BLOCK_EXTERNAL, which throws on external links, so default/hardened configurations on 2.267.0+ block the behavior.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, developer/build-time vulnerability rather than a mass-exploitable server flaw, and the signals are internally consistent. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (6.8) uses AV:L and UI:P, meaning exploitation requires local context on the build host plus a developer action (running CDK asset bundling) - it is NOT remotely reachable against a running service. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N), aligning with CWE-59 symlink-following that leaks build-host files into a published asset. No EPSS score was provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; this reads as a latent supply-chain/CI integrity issue rather than an urgent internet-facing threat. The main caveat: the 'VC:H but SC:N/no scope change' framing arguably understates the blast radius, since leaked build-host secrets (e.g., credentials embedded in a deployed artifact) could enable follow-on compromise - teams using CDK in shared or untrusted-source CI pipelines should prioritize the upgrade accordingly.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence the contents of a CDK asset source directory (for example via a malicious dependency, a compromised source tree, or an untrusted contribution) plants a symbolic link pointing outside the asset tree. When a developer or CI pipeline runs CDK asset bundling, the link is resolved and a sensitive file from the build host - such as credentials or configuration - is copied into and published as the deployed asset. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Information disclosure in AWS CDK's core library (aws-cdk-lib) before 2.267.0 allows a context-dependent actor to cause files from the build host to be published as a deployed asset through improper symbolic-link resolution during asset bundling. Exploitation is local to the build environment and requires the victim to actually run the bundling/synth step (UI:P) on a directory whose contents the attacker can influence, so a developer or CI pipeline must consume untrusted asset sources for the issue to trigger. No public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; the primary risk is unintended disclosure of build-host files (for example credentials or configuration) into a deployed stack. Vendor-released patch: 2.267.0, which changes bundling to throw on external symlinks via SymlinkFollowMode.BLOCK_EXTERNAL.

RemediationAI

Upgrade aws-cdk-lib to version 2.267.0 or later (for example npm install aws-cdk-lib@2.267.0) and re-synthesize/redeploy affected stacks so that bundling runs with the corrected symlink handling; consult the vendor bulletin at https://aws.amazon.com/security/security-bulletins/2026-131-aws/ and the release notes at https://github.com/aws/aws-cdk/releases/tag/v2.267.0. Note that 2.267.0 also enforces validation on Firehose S3Bucket timeZone values, so pipelines using non-standard IANA abbreviations such as EST or Etc/UTC will now fail at synthesis and must be switched to a standard identifier. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to explicitly configure assets with SymlinkFollowMode.BLOCK_EXTERNAL and to reject external links in asset directories; because the pre-2.267.0 behavior for BLOCK_EXTERNAL during bundling is exactly what the fix address, this should be paired with sanitizing or copying asset inputs into a clean staging directory with symlinks removed before synthesis. Additional mitigations include building only from trusted, version-controlled sources, restricting write access to directories consumed by CDK bundling on developer machines and CI runners, and running builds in short-lived containers or sandboxes with no access to sensitive host files; these reduce exposure but do not eliminate the issue for pipelines that must process externally supplied assets, and blocking external symlinks can break legitimate builds that intentionally reference files outside the asset tree.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is rooted in CWE-59, Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following'), which occurs when a program resolves a path without validating that it stays within the intended directory tree. AWS CDK's asset bundling pipeline stages local files for deployment as CloudFormation assets; when it walks an asset directory it can follow symbolic links that point outside that tree and treat the target as part of the asset set. Because the affected component is a build-time Node.js/TypeScript library (aws-cdk-lib, CPE cpe:2.3:a:aws:aws-cdk-lib:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. all versions before 2.267.0), the security boundary is the build host rather than any running application, and the attacker must be able to plant or influence a symlink inside a directory that CDK later bundles. The upstream fix (GitHub issue #38506) makes SymlinkFollowMode.BLOCK_EXTERNAL throw during bundling, so external links are rejected instead of dereferenced, and it is shipped alongside a separate, unrelated breaking change to the Kinesis Firehose S3Bucket destination time zone validation.
