| Impact | Signals are strongly aligned toward high real-world priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 8.8) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring only low privileges (any authenticated user with workflow edit rights) and no user interaction, yielding full confidentiality, integrity, and availability loss - consistent with the CWE-913 (improper control of dynamically-managed code) sandbox-escape described. POC is publicly available and a vendor patch exists, raising both exploitability and the pool of actors who can reverse the fix. Notably, one NVD reference is an Akamai research article describing the 'Zerobot' malware actively targeting the n8n automation platform, which implies real exploitation activity beyond mere POC; however, the input does NOT explicitly set KEV=YES - the CISA KEV reference is only a catalog search URL, not a confirmed listing - so active exploitation cannot be treated as CISA-confirmed. Treat this as 'publicly available exploit code exists' with credible but unconfirmed-via-KEV reporting of in-the-wild activity. The only material tempering factor is the PR:L authentication requirement: this is not a pre-auth internet drive-by, so exposure is concentrated in instances where untrusted or lower-trust users can create/edit workflows, or where credentials can be obtained. Given n8n's growing deployment and frequent internet exposure, this is a genuine priority to patch, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk paper finding. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Remote code execution in n8n's workflow expression evaluation system allows an authenticated user with workflow creation or editing rights to escape the JavaScript sandbox and run arbitrary code with the privileges of the n8n process, affecting versions from 0.211.0 up to (but not including) 1.120.4, 1.121.1, and 1.122.0. The issue is confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) and publicly available exploit code exists, with security research tying exploitation to Zerobot malware campaigns targeting exposed n8n deployments. Successful abuse gives full compromise of the instance: theft of secrets and workflow data, unauthorized workflow modification, and system-level command execution on the host.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to 1.120.4, 1.121.1, or 1.122.0 (the GHSA advisory recommends 1.122.0 or later), which installs the FunctionThisSanitizer AST hook, tightens the unsafe-object-property denylist, and bumps ast-types; the corresponding upstream fixes are commits 08f332015153decdda3c37ad4fcb9f7ba13a7c79, 1c933358acef527ff61466e53268b41a04be1000, and 39a2d1d60edde89674ca96dcbb3eb076ffff6316 as referenced in GHSA-v98v-ff95-f3cp. Until upgrading is possible, restrict workflow creation and editing permissions to fully trusted users only - the trade-off is loss of self-service automation for other accounts and a need to audit existing workflows for malicious expressions - and run n8n in a hardened environment with least-privilege OS accounts and restricted outbound network access so an escape yields limited host control, accepting that this may break integrations that require broad filesystem or egress access. Because the flaw is confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) and exploit code is public, exposed instances should also be rotated for any credentials or secrets reachable by the n8n process and reviewed for unauthorized workflow modifications; the documented workarounds reduce but do not eliminate risk and are short-term measures only.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause class is CWE-913 (Improper Control of Dynamically-Managed Code Resources): n8n renders user-authored {{ ... }} expressions through the @n8n/tournament JavaScript interpreter, which relies on AST-rewriting hooks rather than a true process boundary to sandbox evaluation. Existing sanitizers (PrototypeSanitizer, DollarSignValidator) blocked property access to __proto__, prototype, constructor, and getPrototypeOf, but did not constrain the this binding of regular function expressions - a plain function(){...} invoked as an IIFE or passed as a callback was called without an explicit receiver, so this resolved to the Node.js global and exposed the process object. From there an attacker could reach module-loading primitives such as process.mainModule, binding, and _load to break out into arbitrary code execution. The vendor fix adds a FunctionThisSanitizer AST before-hook that rewrites IIFE call expressions to fn.call({ process: {} }, ...) and callback function expressions to fn.bind({ process: {} }), injects that hook into the evaluator proxy, extends the unsafe-object-property denylist with mainModule, binding, and _load, and upgrades the ast-types dependency from 0.15.2 to 0.16.1. The CPE data confirms the affected package is the n8n Node.js application (cpe:2.3:a:n8n:n8n:*:*:*:*:*:node.js:*:*), including the specific 1.121.0 release stream.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionNVD
n8n is an open source workflow automation platform. Versions starting with 0.211.0 and prior to 1.120.4, 1.121.1, and 1.122.0 contain a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in their workflow expression evaluation system. Under certain conditions, expressions supplied by authenticated users during workflow configuration may be evaluated in an execution context that is not sufficiently isolated from the underlying runtime. An authenticated attacker could abuse this behavior to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the n8n process. Successful exploitation may lead to full compromise of the affected instance, including unauthorized access to sensitive data, modification of workflows, and execution of system-level operations. This issue has been fixed in versions 1.120.4, 1.121.1, and 1.122.0. Users are strongly advised to upgrade to a patched version, which introduces additional safeguards to restrict expression evaluation. If upgrading is not immediately possible, administrators should consider the following temporary mitigations: Limit workflow creation and editing permissions to fully trusted users only; and/or deploy n8n in a hardened environment with restricted operating system privileges and network access to reduce the impact of potential exploitation. These workarounds do not fully eliminate the risk and should only be used as short-term measures.
Executive ViewAI
n8n workflow automation deployments are exposed to remote code execution that can hand an attacker full control of the n8n instance and the underlying host, affecting versions from 0.211.0 through 1.120.3, 1.121.0, and 1.122.0. Because this flaw is confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) and publicly available exploit code exists, with exploitation linked to Zerobot malware campaigns against exposed n8n servers, any internet-facing instance represents an immediate organizational risk. Leadership should care because a successful compromise means credential and secret theft, unauthorized modification of business-critical automation workflows, and command execution on the host - potentially cascading into connected systems that n8n integrates with.
