| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to a host running an affected NVIDIA GPU Display Driver (GeForce, RTX/Quadro/NVS, or Tesla branches below the fixed versions in bulletin 5861) AND the attacker must already hold HIGH privileges (PR:H) on that host to reach the kernel-mode driver interface. No user interaction is required (UI:N) and no special non-default driver configuration is called out - any affected driver version is exposed. Note for GeForce specifically, driver versions prior to 582.78 affect only GPUs based on NVIDIA Maxwell, Volta, and Pascal architectures. Limiting factors: no network vector (AV:L, cannot be triggered remotely), and the PR:H prerequisite means the attacker must already be highly privileged - this is a local privilege/kernel-escalation primitive, not an initial-access vector. |
| Impact | Real-world risk is MODERATE-LOW despite full-CIA impact. The CVSS 3.1 vector (6.7, AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U) is the dominant signal and it is decisively local: an attacker must already have HIGH privileges (PR:H - effectively administrator/root or equivalent kernel-adjacent access) on the host before touching this kernel-mode array-index flaw. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so all exploitation-probability signals are absent. The 'RCE' tag conflicts with the CVSS vector: with AV:L this is local code execution in kernel mode, not remote exploitation - treat 'RCE' as loose labeling, not network-reachable RCE. The high PR requirement is the key mitigating factor; an attacker holding PR:H already controls most of the system, so the practical marginal gain is kernel-level code execution/privesc from an already-privileged position. No conflicting network-vs-local signals beyond the tag. Priority: medium at most for hosts where untrusted users can obtain high privileges; otherwise low. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already holds high privileges on a Windows or Linux workstation or GPU compute node submits a crafted request through the NVIDIA kernel-mode driver interface that supplies an out-of-bounds array index. The driver fails to validate the index, corrupting kernel memory and yielding kernel-mode code execution, privilege escalation to full kernel control, or a system crash. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Improper validation of an array index in the kernel-mode layer of the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver for Windows and Linux gives a local, already highly privileged attacker a path to full loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the host. The flaw affects driver branches for GeForce, RTX/Quadro/NVS, and Tesla products below the fixed versions published in NVIDIA bulletin 5861, including 580.178.04, 582.78, 595.91.07, 596.86, 610.60, 610.88, 615.71.09 and 616.92 depending on the product line. Exploitation requires local access (AV:L) and pre-existing high privileges (PR:H) to reach the kernel-mode driver interface, with no user interaction and no network vector, so this is a local privilege/kernel-escalation primitive rather than an initial-access vector; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis. Real-world risk is MODERATE-LOW despite the full-CIA impact assessment, because the attacker must already be highly privileged before the flaw can be touched.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available as driver updates on each affected branch: upgrade GeForce drivers to 610.60, 616.56, 580.178.04, 595.91.07 or 610.57.04 as applicable (582.78 only covers Maxwell, Volta and Pascal GPUs), RTX/Quadro/NVS drivers to 582.78, 580.178.04, 595.91.07, 596.86, 610.57.04, 610.88, 615.71.09 or 616.92 as applicable, and Tesla drivers to 610.88, 616.92, 580.178.04, 595.91.07, 596.86, 610.57.04 or 615.71.09 as applicable, following NVIDIA security bulletin 5861 at https://github.com/NVIDIA/product-security/tree/main/2026/5861. Until systems can be updated, the most effective compensating control is to reduce the population that can reach the kernel-mode driver interface, since exploitation already requires high local privileges: audit and trim membership in local Administrators/root groups and any service accounts permitted to open the GPU driver device handles, and remove interactive or remote-desktop logon rights from accounts that do not need them. Additional options with trade-offs include running untrusted workloads in containers or VMs without GPU passthrough (loses GPU acceleration for those workloads), enforcing Windows driver blocklist/WHQL signing and module signing policies so that only signed drivers load (does not mitigate the in-driver bounds bug itself), and enabling kernel crash-dump retention and GPU driver event logging to detect the access violations and driver resets that a brute-forced out-of-bounds index would typically produce. Note that these measures reduce exposure and improve detection but do not remove the underlying defect; driver updates remain the only complete fix, and systems running EOL driver branches should be migrated to a supported branch rather than individually mitigated.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is classified as CWE-129, Improper Validation of Array Index, and lives in the kernel-mode layer of the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver. Kernel-mode display drivers expose IOCTL-style interfaces that user-mode components and privileged processes call to manage GPU resources; when an array index supplied or derived through such an interface is not bounds-checked before it is used to address a table, buffer, or dispatch structure, the driver can be induced to read or write outside the intended object in kernel memory. Because the affected code executes in ring 0, the consequences map directly to the CVSS impact triad: arbitrary kernel memory corruption can yield code execution in kernel context, escalation of privileges to SYSTEM/root, disclosure of kernel memory contents, data tampering, and denial of service through driver or system crashes. The affected CPE set identifies GeForce, RTX/Quadro/NVS, and Tesla product families across Windows and Linux; the EUVD version data further indicates that within the GeForce branch the lower fixed baseline (582.78) applies only to GPUs based on the NVIDIA Maxwell, Volta, and Pascal architectures, so the exact fixed version depends on both product line and GPU generation. The attack surface is strictly local: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, meaning an attacker who already holds high privileges on the host can trigger the defect without a network path and without user interaction, and no non-default driver configuration is called out as a precondition.
