MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires (1) the target to have an EVPN-VPWS (Virtual Private Wire Service) service configured within its EVPN deployment, and (2) the attacker to be an already-configured BGP/EVPN peer with an established adjacency to the device - the overflow is reached through protocol-valid route advertisements, so no malformed or out-of-spec packets are needed. The principal limiting factor is the trusted-peer precondition: only a configured neighbor (or an attacker who has compromised one) can deliver the triggering advertisement, which meaningfully reduces exposure versus a truly anonymous internet-facing flaw. Impact is also platform-gated: root code execution applies to Junos OS, whereas Junos OS Evolved experiences only an rpd crash (denial of service). |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk case. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack with no privileges or user interaction required, and the worst-case technical impact is full root code execution on Junos OS (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H). The one meaningful mitigating factor the raw score does not fully convey is the description's requirement for a 'configured BGP/EVPN peer' - exploitation is constrained to an attacker who already holds an established BGP/EVPN adjacency with the target, which narrows the realistic threat to a compromised or malicious peer rather than any anonymous internet host. Note the PR:N rating reflects that no authentication to rpd itself is bypassed, but the peering precondition is a real exposure limiter. Signals are partially missing/conflicting: there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC referenced, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the input and should be treated as unproven. Impact also diverges by platform - root code execution on Junos OS versus only an rpd crash (denial of service) on Junos OS Evolved - so the VC:H/VI:H rating applies primarily to the Junos OS case while Evolved is availability-only. A vendor patch is available, making remediation the clear action. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or has compromised a device in a BGP/EVPN peering relationship with a vulnerable Junos router sends protocol-valid (not malformed) route advertisements for an EVPN-VPWS service. On Junos OS this overflows a stack buffer in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) and yields arbitrary code execution as root; on Junos OS Evolved the same input crashes rpd, disrupting routing. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the low attack complexity means a peer that can craft the advertisement needs no special timing or race conditions. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Remote root code execution in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Junos OS is reachable through protocol-valid EVPN route advertisements sent by an established BGP/EVPN peer for a configured EVPN-VPWS service, while the identical input causes only an rpd crash (denial of service) on Junos OS Evolved. The underlying defect is a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in a daemon that runs with root privileges on FreeBSD-based Junos OS, so a successful overflow yields full device compromise, and Juniper has published patched builds under advisory JSA112187. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 base is 9.3 with AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, but real exposure is gated by the requirement that the attacker already hold a configured BGP/EVPN adjacency to the target device; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no KEV confirmation of active exploitation.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Juniper has published fixed builds documented in JSA112187 (https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112187); the fixed thresholds reflected in the ENISA EUVD data are Junos OS 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3 and 26.2R1-S2, with Junos OS Evolved equivalents 23.2R2-S7.7-EVO, 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO, 26.2R1-S2-EVO, 25.2X100-D35-EVO and 25.4X300-D40-EVO - confirm the exact platform-specific build against the advisory before scheduling the upgrade. Because the overflow is only reachable via EVPN route advertisements delivered over an already-established BGP/EVPN adjacency, the most effective interim control is to remove or disable EVPN-VPWS configuration on devices that do not require it, which eliminates the vulnerable code path entirely at the cost of the Layer 2 point-to-point service; where VPWS is required, shrink the BGP attack surface by filtering TCP/179 with firewall filters to known peer addresses only, enabling BGP peer authentication (TCP-MD5 or TCP-AO), and applying import policies that drop EVPN route types your deployment does not consume, understanding that none of these measures stop a peer that is legitimately trusted and subsequently compromised - which is precisely the threat model. On Junos OS Evolved, unscheduled rpd restarts or core dumps are the observable exploitation symptom and should be treated as an active-compromise indicator while the patched build is being deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
rpd is the routing protocol daemon in both Junos OS (FreeBSD-based) and Junos OS Evolved (Linux-based); it runs as a privileged root process that terminates BGP sessions and processes the BGP EVPN address family (AFI 25 / SAFI 70). The flaw is a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in the code path that handles EVPN route information for an EVPN-VPWS (Virtual Private Wire Service) attachment circuit: data derived from a received route advertisement for that service is written into a fixed-size stack buffer without an adequate bounds check, overwriting adjacent stack memory and enabling control-flow redirection. Because the trigger is a protocol-valid route advertisement rather than a malformed or out-of-spec packet, no BGP parser evasion or specially crafted packet smuggling is required - the attacker simply has to be a legitimate-looking speaker on an existing session. The consequence differs by platform: on Junos OS the corrupted stack is exploited in a root-owned process to gain code execution as root, whereas on Junos OS Evolved the same corruption manifests as a daemon crash and denial of service. CPE coverage is junos_os and junos_os_evolved (both version-wildcarded in the CPE feed), and ENISA EUVD tracks the issue as EUVD-2026-101417 alongside Juniper's own advisory.

3DescriptionCVE.org
A Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows a configured BGP/EVPN peer to cause root code execution on Junos OS or an rpd crash on Junos OS Evolved via protocol-valid route advertisements for an EVPN-VPWS service.
Executive ViewAI
Juniper Junos OS (and Junos OS Evolved) contains a critical remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2026-101982) in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) that can be triggered by a malicious BGP/EVPN peer advertising EVPN routes for a configured EVPN-VPWS service, leading to full root compromise of the device. Organizations with Juniper devices running affected Junos OS versions in EVPN-VPWS deployments are at risk, especially those with untrusted or external BGP/EVPN adjacencies. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the severity and potential for network-wide compromise warrant immediate patching.
