| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a victim to build an attacker-controlled Dockerfile or build context in which special file inodes (device nodes, FIFOs, or sockets) are substituted where BuildKit expects regular files, triggering CWE-441 confused-deputy file actions. The high-impact outcome - unintended host device access - is LIMITED to rootful BuildKit workers; rootless configurations face primarily operation-blocking (availability) effects. Key limiting factors: the attack is local (AV:L) via build input rather than remote, and it needs the victim to actually run a build on the malicious input (UI:A), so it is most relevant to multi-tenant or untrusted-source CI/CD pipelines using rootful workers. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity, defense-in-depth style flaw rather than an urgent remote-exploitation priority. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) scores 6.0 and makes the real constraint clear: exploitation is LOCAL and requires active user interaction (UI:A) - specifically, a victim must initiate a BuildKit build against attacker-supplied input. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC provided in the intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Impact is split: the vulnerable-system metrics are modest (VI:L/VA:L) while the subsequent-system metrics are high (SI:H/SA:H), which is consistent with the description's warning that on ROOTFUL workers the confused-deputy behavior (CWE-441) can reach host devices beyond the build sandbox - a genuine sandbox-escape concern in multi-tenant CI/CD. Note one conflict to verify: the 'Information Disclosure' tag and the 'host device access' language imply confidentiality impact, yet the CVSS vector sets VC:N - the modeled impact is integrity/availability, not disclosure. Overall: real but conditional risk, prioritize where untrusted Dockerfiles/build contexts are built on rootful BuildKit workers. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a shared CI/CD pipeline, an attacker submits a repository containing a crafted build context in which special file inodes (e.g., device, FIFO, or socket nodes) are placed where BuildKit expects regular files. When the pipeline's rootful BuildKit worker processes the build, the file operations are performed against those special files, allowing unintended access to host devices or blocking of build operations. No public exploit code was identified in the provided intelligence. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
BuildKit, the container build engine used by Docker and exposed through docker build/buildx, can be tricked into performing file operations on special file inodes - device nodes, FIFOs, or sockets - at paths where it expects ordinary regular files, a confused-deputy condition (CWE-441). A user who builds an attacker-controlled Dockerfile or build context can therefore cause build operations to hang/block, and on rootful workers can obtain unintended access to host devices; rootless configurations are effectively limited to availability and integrity effects. The attack is local and requires the victim to actively run a build on the malicious input, so exposure concentrates in multi-tenant or untrusted-source CI/CD pipelines that use rootful BuildKit workers; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not in CISA KEV. This is best treated as a medium-severity, defense-in-depth hardening issue rather than an urgent remote-exploitation priority.
RemediationAI
The vendor-released fix is BuildKit v0.33.1, published at https://github.com/moby/buildkit/releases/tag/v0.33.1; upgrade to that version (or a later one) and, where BuildKit is bundled, update the parent product to a release that vendors v0.33.1 or newer - Docker Engine, Docker Desktop, buildx, and any embedded BuildKit in CI runners should be rebuilt or redeployed on the fixed library rather than patched in isolation. See GHSA-9728-qjrv-2xh2 for the advisory text and confirmed fix version. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to stop running builds from untrusted sources against rootful workers: switch the affected builders to rootless mode, which per our assessment removes the unintended host device access outcome and leaves only operation-blocking effects; the trade-off is reduced build compatibility for workloads needing privileged filesystem access. As a second layer, isolate untrusted builds in disposable, unprivileged sandboxes or ephemeral VMs with no host device passthrough and no sensitive mounts, accepting the cost of slower, less cache-friendly builds. Also constrain build contexts at the pipeline boundary by disallowing or normalizing special inodes (device nodes, FIFOs, sockets) in submitted contexts before they reach the daemon, and enforce build timeouts so a FIFO-triggered block degrades to a failed job rather than a hung worker; these mitigations reduce but do not eliminate the confused-deputy window and should be treated as temporary until v0.33.1 is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
BuildKit is Docker's modular build-execution component: it parses Dockerfiles, resolves build contexts, and runs file actions (COPY, ADD, cache mounts, snapshotting) against a content store, frequently with elevated privileges on behalf of user-supplied build input. CWE-441 ('Unintended Proxy or Intermediary / Confused Deputy') is the root-cause class here: BuildKit, acting as a privileged deputy, performs path-based file operations under the assumption that the target inode is a regular file, but the caller-controlled build input can substitute a special inode (character/block device node, FIFO, or UNIX socket). Because the operation keys off the path rather than re-validating inode type at action time, BuildKit can be induced to open, read, or proxy access to something it did not intend to touch. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:H/SA:H) confirms the defender-relevant shape: the vulnerable component's own confidentiality is not impacted, but the subsequent system (the host) faces high integrity and availability impact - consistent with host device access on rootful workers, while rootless workers mostly see blocking/FIFO-style denials. The tagged CPE cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit confirms the Moby BuildKit codebase, which is embedded in Docker Engine, Docker Desktop, buildx, and third-party builders, so downstream consumers inherit the flaw until they rebase on a fixed release.
