Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to be able to submit an LLB build definition to buildkitd via a build frontend - i.e., access to the BuildKit build API/daemon socket, which the local attack vector (AV:L) reflects. No special product configuration is named in the advisory; the impact is most severe when buildkitd is shared among multiple or untrusted build submitters (multi-tenant build services, shared CI runners), since one crafted definition terminates all concurrent builds on that daemon. The limiting factors are: the attacker must have build-submission access to the daemon (not arbitrary network exposure), and in a single-user local build context the denial of service is self-contained. Patched in BuildKit v0.33.1.

Impact

This is a denial-of-service vulnerability (CWE-129, improper validation of array index) in moby/buildkit, with real risk that is moderate and bounded. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) shows a local, low-complexity, unauthenticated attack whose only impact is availability (VA:H; VC:N/VI:N - no confidentiality or integrity loss), consistent with the base score of 6.9 (Medium). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so there is no evidence of active or probable near-term exploitation - exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent: a crash bug reachable by anyone able to submit a build, with no data compromise. The practical priority depends heavily on deployment model: in single-user local Docker builds the blast radius is self-inflicted, but in shared/multi-tenant BuildKit services one malicious frontend can terminate all concurrent builds, which is where this matters. Note the AV:L designation means exploitation is through the build submission interface (daemon socket/API), not arbitrary network reach; defenders exposing buildkitd to untrusted build submitters should treat it as higher priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In a shared or CI/CD BuildKit environment where untrusted users can submit builds, an attacker crafts a malicious LLB (low-level build) definition and submits it through a build frontend. The malformed definition triggers an array-index fault that panics buildkitd, terminating the daemon and interrupting every build running on it. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Denial of service in Moby BuildKit allows anyone able to submit an LLB build definition to a buildkitd daemon to panic and terminate the daemon process, aborting every build running on that instance. The flaw is an out-of-bounds array index (CWE-129) reached during processing of an attacker-controlled low-level build graph, and it affects all BuildKit releases prior to v0.33.1, including BuildKit embedded in Docker Engine and CI/build-service deployments. The assessed impact is availability-only (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 6.9), the attack surface is the local build API/daemon socket rather than arbitrary network exposure, and severity scales with multi-tenancy - a shared CI runner or multi-tenant build service loses all concurrent builds from a single crafted definition. Vendor patch v0.33.1 is available; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV).

RemediationAI

Upgrade to BuildKit v0.33.1 (https://github.com/moby/buildkit/releases/tag/v0.33.1), the version that carries the vendor fix per advisory GHSA-cv6p-7w7g-xjwq; for downstream consumers, update the bundled BuildKit in Docker Engine/Buildx to a release that ships this engine version and rebuild any cached builder images. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective control is to shrink the set of parties who can submit builds to buildkitd: bind the daemon to a Unix socket whose filesystem permissions allow only trusted users/groups, and where remote buildkitd over TCP is required, enforce mutual TLS client-certificate authentication (--tlsverify with --tlscacert/--tlscert/--tlskey) so unreachable clients cannot reach the build API - the trade-off is added PKI management and the fact that this does nothing against tenants who are already authorized submitters. Run separate buildkitd instances per trust domain, ideally rootless and with isolated caches, so a panic only terminates that tenant's builds; the cost is loss of shared build cache, higher resource consumption, and more operational overhead. Supervise the daemon (systemd Restart=always, Kubernetes liveness/restart policy) to shorten outage duration, accepting that it neither prevents the initial panic nor saves in-flight builds, and note that BuildKit offers no option to simply 'disable LLB' since frontends are required for normal operation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

BuildKit (moby/buildkit) is the build engine used by Docker Engine and many CI platforms. Frontends such as the Dockerfile frontend translate user input into LLB - a protobuf-defined low-level build graph of operations - which is shipped to buildkitd over the build API (typically a Unix socket, optionally TCP with TLS). The root cause class is CWE-129, improper validation of array index: an index value taken from the attacker-supplied LLB definition is used against an array/slice without bounds checking, producing an out-of-range access that panics the Go runtime and kills the daemon. Because buildkitd services all clients from a single process, the crash is not scoped to the malicious request - every in-flight build on that daemon is interrupted. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the affected component is the upstream Moby BuildKit package across versions before the fix. Note that the source tag metadata labels this 'Information Disclosure'; that is inconsistent with the advisory and with the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector, which shows confidentiality and integrity impact of None and only availability impact of High - treat the availability-only DoS characterization as authoritative. The assessed vector uses AV:L with PR:N, meaning the attacker needs reachability to the build-submission API (local socket or an authenticated remote endpoint) but no additional product-level privileges beyond that access; authentication requirements at the API layer are not confirmed by the available data beyond the fact that daemon-socket access is the prerequisite.
