Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to be able to submit a build context to a BuildKit (buildkitd) daemon - the operation targets the Dockerfile frontend specifically, triggered by including an oversized Dockerfile or .dockerignore file in that context. This is not a default-configuration remote-unauthenticated flaw: the CVSS PR:L indicates low-privilege access is needed to submit a build, and AV:L indicates local/context-level access to the daemon rather than arbitrary internet-facing exploitation. The real-world risk is sharply concentrated on shared or multi-tenant buildkitd instances (CI/CD pipelines, hosted build services), where a crash caused by one submitter interrupts other users' builds; a single-user workstation daemon only harms the attacker's own environment. The limiting factor is that impact is confined to availability (daemon termination) with no code execution, data disclosure, or integrity impact, and the issue is fully mitigated by upgrading to v0.33.1, which rejects such files above 16 MiB.

Impact

This is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the BuildKit Dockerfile frontend, and the available signals consistently point to a moderate, bounded risk rather than a top-tier emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) scores 6.8 and is internally coherent with the description: impact is confined to availability (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity impact (VC:N/VI:N), matching CWE-789 (memory allocation with excessive size value) and the described outcome of exhausting memory and crashing buildkitd. The AV:L and PR:L metrics indicate an attacker must be able to submit a build context to the daemon with at least low privileges - i.e., this is an authenticated local/adjacent operation, not blind remote exploitation. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation; by precision rule this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The practical significance is highest on shared or multi-tenant build infrastructure (CI/CD runners, build-as-a-service), where one tenant's crash interrupts other tenants' builds on the same instance - the description explicitly calls this out. Note one input inconsistency to flag: the 'Information Disclosure' tag directly contradicts the CVSS vector (VC:N, no confidentiality impact) and the described memory-exhaustion behavior; this is a pure availability issue, not information disclosure. Overall: a legitimate but patch-on-normal-cycle issue, elevated mainly where buildkitd is shared across untrusted or semi-trusted workloads.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with the ability to submit builds to a shared buildkitd instance (for example, a low-privileged user or tenant on a multi-tenant CI/CD build service) crafts a build context whose Dockerfile or .dockerignore file is extremely large. When the frontend loads that file into memory without a size limit, buildkitd allocates memory proportional to the file, exhausts available memory, and is terminated - interrupting all other builds running on the same instance. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, but the technique is trivial to reproduce given build-submission access.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Denial of service in the BuildKit Dockerfile frontend (buildkitd) allows a user who can submit a build context to exhaust the daemon's memory and terminate it by placing an oversized Dockerfile or .dockerignore file in that context, because these files were loaded into memory without any size limit (CWE-789). The assessed vector (AV:L/PR:L) indicates low-privilege, local/context-level access is required to submit the build, so the practical risk is concentrated on shared or multi-tenant buildkitd instances such as CI/CD pipelines and hosted build services, where one submitter's crash interrupts other users' builds, while a single-user workstation daemon only harms its own environment. Impact is bounded to availability with no code execution, data disclosure, or integrity impact, no public exploit code or CISA KEV confirmation was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released BuildKit v0.33.1, which rejects such files above 16 MiB.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to BuildKit v0.33.1 or later, which is the vendor-released patch and introduces the 16 MiB cap on Dockerfile and .dockerignore files in the build context (release: https://github.com/moby/buildkit/releases/tag/v0.33.1; advisory: https://github.com/moby/buildkit/security/advisories/GHSA-mgqf-486f-49vp). Until the upgrade can be applied, compensate by rejecting oversized contexts before they reach buildkitd - for example validating context contents at the submission layer so any Dockerfile or .dockerignore exceeding 16 MiB is refused - though this requires maintaining the check wherever builds are accepted and will break legitimate builds that rely on unusually large files until the daemon itself is patched. Where builds are multi-tenant, isolating buildkitd instances or namespaces per tenant or pipeline limits a crash to the offending tenant's own builds, at the cost of losing shared build-cache benefits and increasing resource usage, and restricting which users or CI jobs may submit builds reduces reachability but does not remove the memory-exhaustion primitive. Applying an OS-level cgroup memory cap to buildkitd bounds host resource pressure from a malicious context, with the trade-off that a heavily loaded daemon may still be OOM-killed and interrupt in-progress builds, so it should be combined with the 16 MiB rejection fix rather than used alone.

Technical ContextAI · show details

BuildKit is the build engine used by Docker (Docker Engine BuildKit and the buildx CLI) and by many CI systems to execute image builds via a daemon, buildkitd, which receives a build context and runs the Dockerfile frontend against it. The frontend reads the context's Dockerfile and .dockerignore into memory during evaluation; the flaw is CWE-789 (Memory Allocation with Excessive Size Value), meaning allocation size is driven by attacker-controlled input rather than a fixed ceiling. An oversized file therefore causes memory allocation proportional to the file size, and since the operation targets the Dockerfile frontend specifically, including a huge Dockerfile or .dockerignore collapses the daemon rather than failing the individual build. The assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H confirms a low-privilege actor with access to submit builds, availability-only impact, and no scope change, while the reported CVSS 4.0 score of 6.8 reflects the same availability-weighted profile. Affected component is tracked as cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, i.e. BuildKit builds prior to the version that introduced the size cap.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Dockerfile frontend loaded the Dockerfile and .dockerignore files of a build context into memory without a size limit. A build context containing an oversized file could make buildkitd allocate memory proportional to that file, potentially exhausting memory and terminating the daemon, which interrupts other builds on the same instance. Fixed by rejecting such files above 16 MiB.
