Exploitation Conditions

Requires BuildKit to be running with proxy networking AND CA injection enabled - a non-default feature combination that must be explicitly configured. The attacker must also be able to submit or execute a build on the builder (PR:L) and win a race window (AT:P / TOCTOU) by modifying the build's CA bundle before BuildKit performs cleanup. Limiting factors: the local attack vector (AV:L) means this is not remotely reachable without build access, the dependence on the optional CA-injection proxy mode sharply narrows exposed deployments, and the primary consequence is denial/cleanup failure (VA:H) rather than confidentiality loss; multi-tenant or untrusted-build environments are the realistic risk surface.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 4.0 base 5.8), low-urgency issue rather than a front-of-line priority. The vendor vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H/SC:N/SI:L/SA:N) describes a locally-scoped (AV:L) flaw that requires an attacker to already be able to submit or run a build (PR:L) and to satisfy a specific attack requirement (AT:P) - consistent with the CWE-367 TOCTOU race described, where a build modifies its CA bundle in the window before cleanup. Impact is skewed toward availability (VA:H - cleanup blocking/hanging) with only limited integrity effect (VI:L, and SI:L reflecting cleanup acting outside the build rootfs); there is no confidentiality impact (VC:N). No EPSS score, SSVC decision data, KEV listing, or POC was provided, so exploitation probability signals are absent - this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. A patch is confirmed available (v0.33.1). Note a caveat: exploitation is gated on a non-default feature combination (proxy networking with CA injection), so the raw CVSS can overstate real-world exposure; conversely, the described 'operate outside the build rootfs' behavior is a sandbox-boundary concern that defenders of multi-tenant builders should weigh more heavily than the medium score alone suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a shared or CI/CD BuildKit builder where proxy networking with CA injection is enabled, an attacker who can submit a crafted Dockerfile/build arranges for the build to rewrite its injected CA bundle just before BuildKit's cleanup phase. Winning this TOCTOU window causes cleanup to hang, fail silently, or perform filesystem operations outside the intended build rootfs. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the attack requires the ability to run a build on the target (PR:L) and reliable timing (AT:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Moby BuildKit (all versions in the affected range per the unbounded CPE cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) can be made to run its cleanup routine against a modified CA bundle when proxy networking with CA injection is enabled, a time-of-check-to-time-of-use (CWE-367) race that causes cleanup to block, operate outside the build rootfs, or fail without failing the build. The attacker must be able to submit or execute a build on the builder (local, low-privilege access; PR:L) and must first change the build's injected CA bundle before cleanup runs; the non-default proxy-with-CA-injection mode sharply narrows exposed deployments, and the dominant consequence is availability and integrity of the cleanup operation (VA:H, VI:L) rather than confidentiality loss. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; vendor-released patch v0.33.1 is available.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade Moby BuildKit to v0.33.1 (https://github.com/moby/buildkit/releases/tag/v0.33.1); see advisory https://github.com/moby/buildkit/security/advisories/GHSA-2f5p-x9ph-g97x. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable the CA injection proxy mode (i.e., do not run builds with proxy networking plus CA injection enabled) - the trade-off is that builds relying on BuildKit-injected CA certificates for a proxied network will no longer trust the proxy's CA and such builds may fail TLS verification. Restrict who can submit or execute builds on the builder (PR:L still grants this) to trusted users only, and avoid running untrusted builds on shared builders with CA injection enabled; this reduces the race attack surface at the cost of multi-tenant flexibility. Because cleanup can fail without failing the build, monitor for blocked cleanup processes and for cleanup activity touching paths outside the build rootfs, and consider rebuilding builders from a clean state if lingering or anomalous cleanup behavior is observed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is a classic time-of-check-to-time-of-use (TOCTOU, CWE-367) flaw in BuildKit's cleanup of the CA bundle that BuildKit injects when proxy networking with CA injection is enabled - a non-default configuration used to let builds trust an intercepting TLS proxy. During a build the build process itself can modify its injected CA bundle, for example by replacing the expected file with a symlink, a blocking object such as a FIFO, or a path that escapes the build rootfs. When BuildKit later performs cleanup it acts on that already-modified state rather than re-validating it, so cleanup can block, follow a link outside the build rootfs, or fail without propagating an error that fails the build. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:moby:buildkit:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* marks all BuildKit versions as affected, and the vendor fixed the issue in v0.33.1. The local attack vector (AV:L) and PR:L prerequisite mean this is not remotely reachable without the ability to run a build on the shared builder.
