MOOS-IvP through 24.8.1 contains a buffer over-read vulnerability in isQuoted(), isBraced(), and isChevroned() functions that strip whitespace but index using the original string length. Attackers can send NODE_REPORT messages with leading or trailing whitespace to read past buffer bounds and access adjacent memory.
AnalysisAI
Unauthenticated network attackers can trigger out-of-bounds memory reads in MOOS-IvP through version 24.8.1 by sending NODE_REPORT messages containing leading or trailing whitespace. The three affected functions - isQuoted(), isBraced(), and isChevroned() in MBUtils.cpp - strip whitespace into a modified string but then index that shorter buffer using the original string's length, causing reads past the end of the stripped buffer and exposing adjacent heap memory or crashing the process. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the ability to publish MOOS messages to the MOOSDB instance, which in typical deployments is accessible over TCP on a local or mission network segment but may be exposed more broadly depending on network configuration. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) scores 8.7 and indicates no-authentication, no-complexity network exploitation leading to availability impact only; however, the vulnerability description explicitly mentions reading adjacent memory, and the Information Disclosure tag is present - suggesting potential confidentiality impact that the VC:N metric does not capture. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Apply the upstream fix by building from the patched commit faff8adfa1a69d68614461f679ebbc1d741c51aa available at https://github.com/moos-ivp/moos-ivp/commit/faff8adfa1a69d68614461f679ebbc1d741c51aa or via pull request https://github.com/moos-ivp/moos-ivp/pull/128; a tagged release version has not been confirmed at time of analysis so operators should monitor the repository for a formal release. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all systems running MOOS-IvP version 24.8.1 or earlier and assess whether they are accessible from untrusted networks; if so, isolate them from public network access. …
