1 technique across 1 tactic: Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open an attacker-crafted PDF file or visit a malicious page that is processed by pdfforge PDF Architect (confirmed affected build 9.1.74.23030); the flaw is triggered during the PDF file-parsing routine when user-supplied data is not validated before a read. Key limiting factors: mandatory user interaction (UI:R - the file must be opened/rendered by the target) and a local attack vector (AV:L), meaning there is no remote, interaction-free path. No special product configuration or non-default feature is required beyond having PDF Architect open the malicious document. Standalone impact is limited to information disclosure; arbitrary code execution requires chaining with a separate vulnerability. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, low-priority issue in practice. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.5 reflects a local attack vector (AV:L), low complexity (AC:L), no privileges required (PR:N), but mandatory user interaction (UI:R), with impact limited to confidentiality (C:H/I:N/A:N) - consistent with an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) that discloses process memory rather than corrupting it. Exploitation signals are weak and mutually consistent: EPSS is only 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis, so this is a high-attention-from-ZDI but low-real-world-risk finding rather than an active threat. The one caveat is the ZDI/tag framing versus the technical core: the tags and advisory note that the OOB read can be chained 'in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code,' but by itself this CVE is an information-disclosure primitive, not code execution - the RCE/Buffer Overflow tags overstate the standalone impact. No key CVSS data is missing or internally conflicting; the vector (local, UI-required) aligns with the description (victim must open a malicious file or visit a malicious page). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious PDF and lures a PDF Architect user into opening it (e.g., via email attachment or a link to a malicious page). When the vulnerable parser processes the file, it reads past the end of an allocated object and leaks adjacent process memory, potentially exposing sensitive data; a motivated attacker could combine this leak with a separate memory-corruption bug to achieve code execution. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

An out-of-bounds read in pdfforge PDF Architect's PDF parsing routine (confirmed affected build 9.1.74.23030) allows an attacker who supplies a crafted PDF to disclose sensitive contents of process memory. Exploitation is not remote or interaction-free: the victim must open the malicious document or visit a page that causes PDF Architect to render it (UI:R), and the assessed vector is local (AV:L) with no privileges required (PR:N). Standalone impact is confidentiality-only - arbitrary code execution in the context of the current process is only achievable by chaining this bug with a separate vulnerability. Risk in practice is low: EPSS is 0.18% (7th percentile), the issue is not in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: neither the ZDI advisory reference (https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1078/) nor the provided intelligence includes a fixed version, so confirm patch status directly with pdfforge before relying on an upgrade. Until a fix is confirmed, apply specific compensating controls: prevent PDF Architect from being the default handler for PDFs and open untrusted documents in a hardened alternative viewer (trade-off: loss of product features for untrusted content); run PDF Architect under a low-privilege account or inside a sandbox/AppContainer with no access to sensitive shares or credential stores (trade-off: reduced functionality for plug-ins and shell integration); enable Windows Defender Exploit Guard attack surface reduction and Exploit Protection mitigations such as Arbitrary Code Guard and export address filtering for the PDF Architect executable (trade-off: possible compatibility or performance issues, and these limit follow-on exploitation rather than the read itself); and filter inbound PDF attachments at the mail and web gateways so crafted files never reach the endpoint (trade-off: some false positives on legitimate documents). Because the standalone impact is information disclosure, the priority is limiting the leak's value as a chain primitive for a subsequent memory-corruption bug, and because EPSS is 0.18% with no KEV listing and no public exploit code identified, emergency measures are not warranted.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic CWE-125 out-of-bounds read inside PDF Architect's PDF file parser. PDF is a complex container format of indirect objects, cross-reference tables/streams, filters (FlateDecode, LZW, ASCII85), embedded fonts and page-content streams; a parser must trust and bounds-check many length, offset and count fields taken from the file. Here, user-supplied data is not adequately validated before being used to index into or walk an allocated buffer, so a malformed structure causes a read past the end of the object. The bytes read out of adjacent heap memory can be returned to or reflected through the application, giving an information leak - useful to an attacker primarily as an ASLR/heap-layout bypass that could enable a follow-on memory-corruption exploit. The supplied CPE identifies pdfforge PDF Architect 9.1.74.23030 as the affected build, and the ZDI tags (RCE, buffer overflow, information disclosure) reflect that chaining potential rather than standalone code execution; per the independent assessment, the defect on its own is disclosure-only (C:H/I:N/A:N) with mandatory user interaction and a local attack vector.

DescriptionNVD
pdfforge PDF Architect PDF File Parsing Out-Of-Bounds Read Information Disclosure Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of pdfforge PDF Architect. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PDF files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated object. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-27915.

Attack Technique
A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
