Buffer Overflow

memory HIGH

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

How It Works

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions. This overwrites whatever data or code exists there, corrupting program state and potentially giving attackers control over execution flow.

Stack-based overflows are the most common variant. When a function allocates a fixed-size buffer on the stack and then copies user-controlled input without proper bounds checking, attackers can overflow past the buffer to overwrite the function's return address. When the function completes, instead of returning to legitimate code, execution jumps to attacker-specified memory containing malicious shellcode. Heap-based overflows work differently—they corrupt heap metadata like chunk size fields or free list pointers, leading to arbitrary memory writes when the allocator processes the corrupted structures.

Modern exploitation bypasses defensive mechanisms through techniques like Return-Oriented Programming (ROP), which chains together existing code snippets to avoid non-executable memory protections. Attackers may also use heap spraying to reliably position shellcode at predictable addresses, defeating address randomization.

Impact

  • Remote code execution — attacker gains ability to run arbitrary commands with the privileges of the vulnerable process
  • Privilege escalation — exploiting kernel or setuid program overflows to gain root/SYSTEM access
  • Denial of service — crashes and memory corruption that render systems unusable
  • Information disclosure — reading sensitive data from adjacent memory regions that should be inaccessible
  • Authentication bypass — overwriting security-critical variables like permission flags or user IDs

Real-World Examples

Fortinet FortiOS suffered a critical buffer overflow (CVE-2025-32756) that allowed unauthenticated remote attackers to execute code as root on firewalls and VPN gateways. Attackers actively exploited this to compromise enterprise network perimeters before patches were available.

The Slammer worm from 2003 exploited a stack overflow in Microsoft SQL Server, spreading to 75,000 hosts in ten minutes by sending a single malformed UDP packet that overwrote the return address with shellcode. No authentication was required.

OpenSSH historically contained a heap overflow in challenge-response authentication that allowed pre-authentication remote root compromise on Unix systems, demonstrating how memory corruption in privileged network services creates maximum impact scenarios.

Mitigation

  • Memory-safe languages — Rust, Go, and modern managed languages prevent buffer overflows by design through automatic bounds checking
  • Stack canaries — random values placed before return addresses that detect corruption before control transfer
  • Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) — randomizes memory locations making exploitation less reliable
  • Data Execution Prevention (DEP/NX) — marks memory regions as non-executable, preventing direct shellcode execution
  • Bounds checking — validate input sizes before copying, use safe functions like strncpy instead of strcpy
  • Fuzzing and static analysis — automated testing to discover overflows before deployment

Stack-based out-of-bounds read in wvWare wv through 1.2.9 allows an unauthenticated local attacker to cause a client-side denial of service: a victim must open a crafted .doc file whose FKP structure carries an oversized crun value, triggering wvGetPAPX_FKP or wvGetCHPX_FKP to read past a 512-byte stack buffer and crash AbiWord or another libwv-based reader. The assessed impact is availability only (CVSS 4.0 local, UI:P, A:H; CVSS 3.1 local, UI:R, A:H), with no confidentiality or integrity impact established. Heap out-of-bounds read in WildMIDI through 0.5.0 allows attackers to crash applications or disclose adjacent heap bytes by supplying a crafted .hmp file with an HMP chunk length of 0-12 that underflows to roughly 4 GB. Exploitation is local and file-driven: the target application or user must load the malicious .hmp file, reaching _WM_ParseNewHmp() with no authentication or special privileges required, and the impact is limited to denial of service or heap information exposure via WildMidi_GetInfo() with no code-execution or write primitive. Out-of-bounds memory write in HPE NonStop RDMA Services NSK can corrupt memory, and the 5.8 CVSS score reflects a local attack path that also requires high privileges, user interaction, and high attack complexity. Only HPE NonStop systems using the RDMA Services NSK component are affected based on the supplied CPE, and no public exploit code or CISA KEV entry is present in the data. Realistic exploitation is limited to a privileged local user who can induce a separate user to interact under race/condition-dependent circumstances, making this a moderate-severity, low-priority issue in practice.

Memory corruption and null pointer dereference in the HPE NonStop SQL/MX Run-Time Statistics component let an attacker who already holds low-level authenticated access to a NonStop system (PR:L) crash the affected process, producing a denial of service, with a secondary possibility of limited information disclosure (C:L, I:L). The high attack-complexity rating (AC:H) reflects that a single deterministic request is not enough - the attacker must craft malformed input that satisfies specific state or timing conditions before the flaw triggers. This is a moderate-severity (CVSS 6.4) input-validation defect (CWE-20) reported by HPE itself; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and exposure is limited to NonStop environments that actually run the SQL/MX Run-Time Statistics feature.

Improper input validation in HPE NonStop KMS Server (Key Management Services) can let a locally authenticated user, with required operator interaction, trigger a buffer overflow via a crafted input message, causing a limited availability impact to the KMS Server. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L (score 2.8), so exploitation requires local access, low-level privileges, and user interaction, with no confidentiality or integrity effect. No public exploit code or CISA KEV active-exploitation signal was identified at time of analysis.

Arbitrary code execution is possible in HPE NonStop Posix User Threads for an authenticated local user with low-level privileges who supplies crafted input to the pthread functionality, due to a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122). The flaw requires pre-existing local access (AV:L), no user interaction (UI:N), and no non-default configuration indicated by the available data; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The vendor advisory is at https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=hpesbns05148en_us&docLocale=en_US, and the independent assessment rates confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as High despite the vendor's 6.6 Medium base score with Low/Low/High impact.

A stack-based buffer overflow in the HPE NonStop Kernel Level Thread Model library allows a locally authenticated, low-privileged user to overwrite stack memory and, in the assessed worst case, execute arbitrary code in the context of the affected library. The vulnerability is reachable only with local access and valid low-privilege credentials (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N), so it cannot be triggered remotely and requires an attacker to already hold a foothold on the NonStop host; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the assessed severity is moderate rather than emergency-grade. Success depends on invoking the vulnerable library from an existing session, which constrains realistic exposure to insiders, compromised local accounts, or post-exploitation privilege-escalation chains on operator-managed NonStop systems.

Stack-based buffer overflow in HPE NonStop EMS Distributor (CWE-121) allows an attacker who already holds a local presence on the NonStop host to corrupt the memory of the Event Management Service Distributor process, producing low integrity and low availability impact with no confidentiality exposure. The assessed vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L, base 4.0) means the flaw cannot be reached remotely, requires conditions beyond the attacker's control to trigger reliably, needs no application-level authentication once local access exists, and involves no user interaction - making this a low-priority issue rather than a critical one. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was supplied; the impact is bounded to the local host and to degradation of the EMS Distributor rather than a full system compromise.

Authenticated buffer overflow in QNAP Qsync Central (the QsyncServer app on QNAP NAS devices) prior to 5.0.0.4 allows a remote attacker who already holds a valid Qsync Central user account to corrupt memory or crash the Qsync process, degrading availability with no confirmed path to data theft or modification. The vulnerability is a classic CWE-120 buffer copy without input-size checking, and the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:N/I:N/A:L) confirms the impact is availability-only and gated behind account possession. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no evidence of active exploitation, and an official fix is available in Qsync Central 5.0.0.4 and later, making this a low-priority, readily remediated issue.

kqueue_fork_copy_knote() indexed into the child's file descriptor table using a knote's file descriptor number without a bounds check. Because the child's table is copied before knotes are transferred, a concurrent thread in the parent could grow the parent's table and register knotes with file descriptor numbers beyond the end of the child's table, causing an out-of-bounds read. An unprivileged local user may be able to exploit these races to escalate privileges.

An out-of-bounds memory read in HPE NonStop EXPAND can be triggered by an authenticated, highly privileged local operator on the NonStop platform, potentially leaking memory contents or destabilizing the EXPAND networking subsystem. Exploitation requires local access (AV:L), pre-existing high privileges (PR:H), and a hard-to-control memory or timing condition (AC:H), so it is neither remotely nor anonymously reachable; no user interaction is required. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor security bulletin (hpesbns05148en_us) is the authoritative source for affected releases and fixes.

Out-of-bounds memory read in HPE NonStop EXPAND can disclose sensitive information to a local attacker who already holds high privileges on the NonStop system. The flaw requires local access and high privilege with high attack complexity, so realistic exploitation is limited to malicious or compromised privileged operators rather than external or unauthenticated attackers. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the CVSS 3.1 score is 4.7 (AV:L/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:L), consistent with a low-priority information-disclosure issue.

Out-of-bounds memory read and write operations in HPE NonStop EXPAND can be triggered by malformed traffic sent to the EXPAND networking subsystem, potentially leading to information disclosure or memory corruption. The vulnerability is rated CVSS 6.4 (AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N) - an attacker needs an adjacent-network position and no credentials, but exploitation depends on specific, attacker-uncontrolled memory or timing conditions, which keeps this at moderate rather than critical severity. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis; remediation guidance should be taken from the HPE security bulletin.

Stack-based buffer overflow in HPE NonStop TELSERV (T9553L01^BAJ and earlier) allows unauthenticated remote attackers who can reach the Telnet server subsystem to corrupt memory and crash the service, producing a denial-of-service condition. The vulnerability is rated CVSS 5.9 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H): exploitation is network-reachable and requires no credentials, but the High attack complexity means the attacker must satisfy non-trivial conditions such as a specific memory state to reliably trigger the overflow, and the impact is confined to availability with no confidentiality or integrity effect. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV listing, and NonStop deployments are typically confined to segmented back-office or payment networks rather than being internet-facing, making this a moderate-severity, limited-impact issue rather than a top-tier priority.

An out-of-bounds read in ggml-org whisper.cpp through version 1.9.4 lets a local attacker crash the application by getting a victim to load a crafted GGML model file whose tensor-type field ('ttype') falls outside the valid range. Exploitation is strictly local and requires user interaction - the victim must choose to open the untrusted model - and the assessed impact is limited to availability (a process crash), with no confidentiality or integrity effect. Publicly available exploit code exists (the upstream issue and PR are public), but the vulnerability is not in CISA KEV and its severity is low.
