Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to load and play an attacker-crafted SF2 SoundFont file in which PMOD or IMOD modulator destination values are set to 63-255; these out-of-range destinations are not validated before indexing the voice generator array. Key limiting factors: the attack vector is local (AV:L) and requires user interaction (UI:P) - the malicious SoundFont must be delivered to and opened/played by a user or an application acting on their behalf - so there is no remote, unauthenticated, default-configuration path. Any FluidSynth-based application (version through 2.6.1) that accepts externally supplied SF2/MIDI content is exposed; the realistic impact is memory corruption and crashes (availability), with no confidentiality impact.

Impact

This is a medium-severity memory-corruption issue (CVSS 4.0 base 6.9) whose signals point to limited, non-urgent real-world risk rather than a top priority. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector is AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H: local attack vector with required (passive) user interaction, no privileges, and impact dominated by availability (VA:H, i.e. crashes) plus limited integrity (VI:L) and no confidentiality loss - consistent with CWE-787 heap/stack out-of-bounds writes triggered by parsing attacker-supplied data. No EPSS score is supplied, there is no CISA KEV listing in the input, and no explicit POC/exploit-code flag is provided; a third-party technical write-up (hackmd) and vendor advisory (VulnCheck) describe the bug and precise code locations but do not amount to a confirmed weaponized exploit. The exploitation status is therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The main limiting factor is that exploitation is not remote-automatable: a victim must load and play a malicious SF2 SoundFont, so this is a classic file-parsing / client-side issue, not a wormable network flaw. Realistic worst case is memory corruption with potential for limited code influence, but the CVSS impact profile and attack model suggest denial-of-service (crash) is the most likely outcome. No key signals are strongly conflicting; the primary gap is the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data to confirm whether any active exploitation exists.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious SF2 SoundFont file containing PMOD/IMOD modulator destination values in the range 63-255. A victim using an application built on FluidSynth opens and plays the file (or a MIDI track referencing it), causing FluidSynth to write past the voice generator array and updated_gen_bit, corrupting heap and stack memory and typically crashing the process. No public exploit code is identified in the input; a technical analysis write-up exists but active exploitation is not confirmed.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in FluidSynth (versions through 2.6.1) allows an attacker to corrupt heap and stack memory by getting a crafted SF2 SoundFont loaded and played - unvalidated PMOD/IMOD modulator destination values of 63 to 255 are used to index the per-voice generator array and updated_gen_bit bitfield without bounds checking. Because the attack vector is local and the victim (or an application acting on their behalf) must open or play the malicious SoundFont, the realistic impact is memory corruption and application crashes (availability) rather than code execution or data theft. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) were identified at time of analysis; the write-up and source references point to a code-review/crash class of issue rather than an urgent, remotely exploitable defect.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch version is identified in the available data; apply the upstream fix as soon as a FluidSynth release later than 2.6.1 is published, and monitor https://github.com/FluidSynth/fluidsynth and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/fluidsynth-through-2.6.1-out-of-bounds-write-via-soundfont-modulator-destination) for the exact fixed version. Until then, treat all externally supplied SoundFonts as untrusted: do not load or play SF2 files from untrusted sources, and have applications validate that every PMOD/IMOD modulator destination is within the legal 0-62 generator range before passing the file to FluidSynth - rejecting out-of-range destinations neutralizes the vulnerable index but discards nonstandard fonts. Where playback of untrusted content cannot be avoided, run FluidSynth in a sandboxed, low-privilege process with full ASLR/stack-canary protections and hard memory limits so an out-of-bounds write is contained as a crash rather than broader memory corruption; these are compensating controls and do not remove the underlying flaw.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FluidSynth is a real-time software synthesizer and SoundFont/MIDI renderer that is widely embedded in media players, DAWs, game engines, and audio tooling. SoundFont 2 (SF2) files define instrument and preset modulators whose 'destination' field selects a generator index; legal destinations stop at 62, but FluidSynth through 2.6.1 does not reject out-of-range values. In src/synth/fluid_voice.c (lines 615-623 and 1184-1229) the destination is used directly to index the fixed-size per-voice generator array and to set the corresponding bit in the updated_gen_bit bitfield, while src/sfloader/fluid_defsfont.c (lines 1609-1611) loads those modulator definitions straight from the untrusted file. Values of 63-255 therefore write past the end of the array and bitfield, the classic CWE-787 out-of-bounds write root cause, corrupting adjacent heap/stack memory and destabilizing the process.

DescriptionCVE.org

FluidSynth through 2.6.1 contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability that allows attackers to corrupt heap and stack memory by supplying unvalidated SoundFont modulator destination values. Attackers can craft an SF2 file with PMOD/IMOD destinations of 63 to 255 that, when loaded and played, write past the voice generator array and updated_gen_bit, causing memory corruption and crashes.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
