| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to a system running a vulnerable NVIDIA GPU Display Driver (GeForce, RTX/Quadro/NVS, or Tesla branches below the fixed versions listed in EUVD-2026-90153) AND high existing privileges (PR:H) to reach the kernel-mode layer and submit the malformed GPU command that carries the out-of-range array index. No user interaction is needed (UI:N) and no network path exists (AV:L). Exploitation is limited by the PR:H prerequisite - the attacker must already be a privileged local user - and by the need for a specific unpatched driver branch; there is no remote or unauthenticated vector. |
| Impact | Genuine but moderate priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (6.7, MEDIUM) is internally consistent with the description: this is a local kernel-mode flaw requiring high privileges (PR:H), not a remotely reachable RCE. The 'RCE' tag overstates real reach - with AV:L there is no network vector; an attacker must already have code execution on the host, and per PR:H typically elevated/administrative access, before triggering the array-index flaw. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no signal of active exploitation or automatable mass exploitation - this is a defense-in-depth kernel patch, not an emergency. The realistic value to an attacker is escalation/persistence within an already-compromised system or bypassing a sandbox/VM boundary, or crashing the host (DoS). The PR:H requirement is the single largest limiting factor and should temper any alarm raised by the multi-impact description (code exec + privesc + info disclosure + tampering). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local attacker who already holds high privileges on a Windows or Linux host with a vulnerable NVIDIA GPU driver crafts a malicious ioctl/GPU command with an out-of-range array index, triggering improper index validation in the kernel-mode layer. The resulting out-of-bounds access corrupts kernel memory to escalate privileges, disclose kernel data, or crash the system. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation is local-only. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Code execution, privilege escalation, denial of service, information disclosure, and data tampering are all possible on Windows and Linux hosts running unpatched NVIDIA GPU Display Driver branches, because the kernel-mode layer fails to validate an array index (CWE-129) when processing a crafted GPU command. The flaw is strictly local: per the CVSS vector (AV:L, PR:H, UI:N) and our independent assessment, an attacker must already hold high privileges on the machine and be able to submit work to the GPU kernel driver, and there is no network or unauthenticated path. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV, so this is a genuine but moderate-priority hardening target for GeForce, RTX/Quadro/NVS, and Tesla deployments; fixed driver builds exist for each affected branch.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to the fixed driver build for your branch - GeForce to 580.178.04, 595.91.07, 610.57.04, 610.60, 615.71.09 or 616.56 (and 582.78 for Maxwell/Volta/Pascal GPUs); RTX/Quadro/NVS to 580.178.04, 595.91.07, 610.57.04, 610.88, 615.71.09, 616.92 or 596.86; and Tesla to 580.178.04, 595.91.07, 610.57.04, 610.88, 615.71.09, 616.92 or 596.86 - following the per-OS guidance in the NVIDIA advisory at https://github.com/NVIDIA/product-security/tree/main/2026/5861. Because the fix requires a kernel-driver update, a reboot is mandatory and on Linux hosts the running module must be unloaded before the new packages are installed; in containerized or vGPU environments, the host driver and guest driver versions must be kept in sync or GPU passthrough will fail after the upgrade. If patching cannot be done immediately, the realistic compensating controls follow from the PR:H prerequisite rather than from network filtering: restrict local administrative and sudo access on GPU-attached workstations and servers so that only fully trusted operators can submit commands to the driver, and remove GPU device-node access (/dev/nvidiactl, /dev/nvidia*, and the Windows device interface) from non-privileged and container workloads - the trade-off is that CUDA, graphics, and Wayland/X sessions running as ordinary users will stop working until the ACLs are relaxed. Isolating untrusted workloads from GPU-accelerated hosts (running them on non-GPU instances or in a separate VM without PCI passthrough) removes the attack surface entirely at the cost of losing hardware acceleration, and since no public exploit code has been identified, these measures are appropriate hardening rather than emergency containment - but note that none of them repair the underlying index validation, so the only complete remedy is installing the fixed driver build listed above.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability lives in the kernel-mode layer of the NVIDIA GPU Display Driver - the Windows kernel driver (nvlddmkm.sys) and the Linux kernel module (nvidia.ko) that mediate all communication between user space and the GPU. CWE-129 (Improper Validation of Array Index) describes the root cause: the driver uses an index value derived from a submitted command, ioctl, or resource descriptor to address an internal array or table without first checking that the index is within bounds. An out-of-range index can steer a read or write to memory outside the intended structure, which is why the vendor and our assessment both rate the confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact as High, while the overall score stays at 6.7 because exploitation requires local access and high existing privileges (PR:H) on the host. The CPE data enumerates the affected product families across three driver branches - nvidia:geforce, nvidia:rtx,_quadro,_nvs, and nvidia:tesla - covering both the consumer/desktop and the workstation/data-center driver tracks, which share the same kernel-mode interface code. Notably, one GeForce entry restricts the affected population to GPUs based on Maxwell, Volta, and Pascal architectures (driver versions prior to 582.78), indicating the indexing path in question is reachable on those older architectures as well. Because the sink is in kernel context, a successful index corruption can translate into any of the C/I/A impacts listed by NVIDIA rather than a single confirmed outcome; our assessment keeps that same three-way High impact and confirms no user interaction is needed once the privileged local access prerequisite is met.
