Exploitation Conditions

All of the following must hold simultaneously: (1) rclone is deployed in rclone serve ftp mode with an external auth-proxy configured (the --auth-proxy flag or equivalent), running a vulnerable version 1.64.0-1.75.0 - non-FTP rclone modes and all versions outside this range are entirely unaffected; (2) at least two clients share the same FTP username but hold different credentials that the auth-proxy resolves to distinct backends - this structural username collision is the core prerequisite, absent in deployments with per-credential unique usernames; (3) the attacker's authenticated session must remain open when the victim logs in with the same username, and the attacker must subsequently issue a VFS-requiring command before their own session expires or the map is overwritten again. Single-user configurations, deployments with enforced unique usernames, and all non-auth-proxy FTP configurations are completely unaffected. The CVSS UI:R metric reflects the required concurrent victim login event beyond the attacker's direct control.

Impact

The provided CVSS 7.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) partially captures the risk, but AC:L likely overstates exploitation ease. A successful attack requires timing coordination: the attacker's authenticated session must remain open while a victim with an identical username subsequently logs in, and the attacker must issue VFS-requiring commands in the resulting window. This race condition arguably warrants AC:H. C:H and I:H accurately reflect full read-write access to the victim's cloud backend. No EPSS score was provided in the input data; the vulnerability is absent from CISA KEV, and no proof-of-concept has been identified - all indicating no known active exploitation. SSVC signals point to: exploitation=none, automatable=no (requires timed concurrent sessions and a structural username collision), technical impact=total on data confidentiality and integrity. Real-world risk is concentrated in multi-tenant rclone serve ftp --auth-proxy deployments where different principals share a username namespace (e.g., generic accounts like 'ftpuser' mapped to different backends). Deployments enforcing unique per-credential usernames, or not using the FTP auth-proxy feature at all, face zero exposure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker opens an FTP session to an rclone FTP auth-proxy server using a generic shared username (e.g., 'ftpuser') and authenticates with their own valid credential, which resolves to their own cloud backend. The attacker holds the session open. When a victim user subsequently authenticates with the same username but a different credential - resolving to the victim's own cloud storage - rclone's CheckPasswd overwrites the server-wide userPass['ftpuser'] entry with the victim's obscured password. The attacker then issues FTP LIST, RETR, or STOR commands; getVFS now loads the victim's backend credential, exposing the victim's cloud files to the attacker for exfiltration, overwrite, or deletion.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Cross-session credential isolation failure in rclone's FTP auth-proxy driver (versions 1.64.0-1.75.0) allows an authenticated network attacker to hijack a victim user's cloud storage backend by exploiting a server-wide, username-keyed credential map. When an attacker holds an open FTP session using a shared username and a victim subsequently authenticates with the same username, the victim's credential silently overwrites the server-wide map entry - causing the attacker's subsequent VFS operations to execute against the victim's backend, enabling reads, writes, renames, and deletions of the victim's cloud objects. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; vendor-released patch v1.75.1 resolves the issue.

RemediationAI

Upgrade rclone to version 1.75.1 (vendor-released patch), available at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/releases/tag/v1.75.1 and implemented in commit c6af0b57c2b4af848bc968c2b407354476184b99. For operators unable to upgrade immediately, enforce globally unique usernames across all auth-proxy credential sets - eliminating the username collision condition removes the attack vector entirely, though it may require restructuring credential namespaces and is an operational rather than technical control. Alternatively, temporarily disable the FTP auth-proxy feature (remove the --auth-proxy flag) and switch to direct backend configuration if multi-tenancy is not required; note this trades the ability to serve multiple users through a single endpoint for immediate security. Network-layer controls that rate-limit or block concurrent FTP sessions per username can reduce but not eliminate the exploitation window, and carry the trade-off of disrupting legitimate concurrent sessions.

Technical ContextAI · show details

rclone is an open-source cloud storage sync utility whose rclone serve ftp subcommand exposes a local FTP server with optional auth-proxy support. When auth-proxy is configured, the FTP driver in cmd/serve/ftp/ftp.go forwards login credentials to an external proxy that resolves them to a virtual filesystem (VFS) backend such as S3, Google Drive, or SFTP. The vulnerable code maintained a single server-wide userPass map[string]string (protected by sync.Mutex) keyed on username: upon successful CheckPasswd, the obscured password was stored under userPass[username], and getVFS later retrieved it to reconstruct the VFS for that session. CWE-488 (Exposure of Data Element to Wrong Session) precisely describes the root cause - session-scoped credential data was stored in a server-wide structure, violating per-session isolation. The fix in commit c6af0b57c2b4af848bc968c2b407354476184b99 moves the credential into the per-session ftp.Context.Sess.Data map via sctx.Sess.Data[sessionObscuredPassKey], binding each session's VFS lookup exclusively to its own authenticated credential. DescriptionCVE.org

rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. From 1.64.0 until 1.75.1, the FTP auth-proxy driver in cmd/serve/ftp/ftp.go stores one obscured password per username in the server-wide userPass map[string]string instead of binding the credential or VFS to the authenticated session. If two accepted credentials use the same username but resolve to different proxy backends, a later CheckPasswd login overwrites userPass[user], and subsequent getVFS operations on the first session are reauthorized with the later password. The first session can then read, create, overwrite, rename, or delete objects using the second credential’s backend authority. Exploitation requires the later same-username login to occur while the first session remains open. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

rclone versions 1.64.0 through 1.75.0 contain a credential isolation failure that allows attackers to hijack users' cloud storage backend credentials, potentially exposing sensitive cloud data to unauthorized access, modification, or deletion. This vulnerability affects any organization using rclone's FTP auth-proxy driver in multi-user environments. Immediate patching to version 1.75.1 or later is essential to prevent credential compromise and data loss.
