Exploitation Conditions

Two non-default configuration conditions must both be present: (1) rclone must be running in HTTP or WebDAV serve mode (invoked as rclone serve http or rclone serve webdav), and (2) symlink translation must be explicitly enabled via the --links flag or links=true in the backend config - neither is enabled by default. Additionally, the attacker must have network access to the rclone HTTP/WebDAV endpoint and must be able to address a .rclonelink-suffixed object within the served path. Exploitation is strictly limited to per-connection denial of service; the rclone process continues to operate and handle other connections, and there is no confidentiality or integrity impact regardless of configuration.

Impact

The provided CVSS 5.3 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) is consistent with the mechanics: the endpoint is network-exposed, requires no authentication, and produces only low-severity availability impact because the process continues running. Two non-default conditions must hold simultaneously - rclone must be in HTTP/WebDAV serve mode and symlink translation must be enabled - which meaningfully narrows the real-world attack surface compared to the raw CVSS score implies. No EPSS data is provided; given the niche configuration dependency, exploitation probability is expected to be low. No active exploitation has been confirmed (not in CISA KEV) and no POC code is publicly known beyond the GitHub advisory description. Overall this is a genuine but low-operational-urgency finding: patching is straightforward and the worst-case impact is disruption to individual HTTP connections, not process termination or data exposure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker discovers a rclone HTTP server (via port scanning or service enumeration) that is running with --links enabled. They browse or guess the path of a .rclonelink object - for example GET /symlink.txt.rclonelink - and replay requests with Range: bytes=999999- headers where 999999 exceeds any realistic symlink target length. Each such request triggers a slice-bounds panic in openTranslatedLink, which Go's runtime recovers per-connection while returning a 500 error to the client; repeated requests degrade service for legitimate users without ever crashing the rclone process.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026

Denial of service in rclone prior to 1.75.1 allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash individual HTTP or WebDAV connections by sending a Range request with an offset exceeding a symlink target's length. When --links or links=true is enabled, symlinks are exposed as .rclonelink pseudo-objects whose content is the target path string; the openTranslatedLink function sliced that string using a caller-controlled offset without bounds validation, producing a deterministic Go slice-bounds panic. Go's net/http recovers panics per connection rather than per process, limiting impact to request-level denial of service. No public exploit has been identified and the vendor-released fix is available in version 1.75.1.

RemediationAI

Upgrade rclone to version 1.75.1 or later; the release is available at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/releases/tag/v1.75.1. The fix (commit 28bf49d) adds a clamping guard to openTranslatedLink that forces any offset below zero to zero and any offset above len(linkdst) to len(linkdst), eliminating the panic. As an immediate workaround before patching, disable symlink translation by removing --links from the rclone command or setting links=false in the config - note this will cause symlinks to be skipped or treated as regular files rather than followed. Alternatively, restrict network access to the rclone HTTP/WebDAV endpoint via firewall rules or require authentication via --htpasswd or a reverse proxy, which prevents unauthenticated Range requests from reaching the vulnerable code path.

Technical ContextAI · show details

rclone (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:rclone:rclone:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a Go-based cloud file-sync tool. When the --links flag is active, local symlinks are materialized as read-only objects with the .rclonelink suffix; openTranslatedLink in backend/local/local.go returns the raw symlink target string as an io.ReadCloser by slicing it with linkdst[offset:]. The offset value flows unchecked from fs.RangeOption.Decode through Object.Open - any HTTP Range: bytes=N- header where N exceeds len(linkdst) triggers a Go runtime slice-bounds panic. lib/http/serve exposes these objects over HTTP and WebDAV, making the panic reachable over the network. The assigned CWE-190 (Integer Overflow) is a loose fit; the root cause is absent bounds validation on an array index (closer to CWE-129), as the commit diff confirms the fix is purely a clamping guard - no integer arithmetic overflow is involved.

DescriptionCVE.org

rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. Prior to 1.75.1, backend/local with --links or links=true exposes symlink targets as .rclonelink objects, and fs.RangeOption.Decode can pass an unchecked positive Range start through Object.Open and openTranslatedLink. The function slices the target string as linkdst[offset:], so a Range start larger than the target length causes a deterministic slice-bounds panic when lib/http/serve exposes the object through HTTP or WebDAV. Go net/http normally recovers the panic per connection, causing request-level denial of service rather than terminating the entire process. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.
