The scope-changed designation is accurate because successful exploitation modifies metadata of filesystem objects outside the sync destination boundary. No EPSS data was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified beyond the structural signals. Symlink escape in rclone's local backend (prior to v1.75.1) allows an attacker who controls sync source contents to apply metadata - ownership, permissions, or timestamps - to files and directories outside the intended destination root. When --links is enabled, a crafted .rclonelink entry plants a symlink in the destination; subsequent metadata routines (MkdirMetadata, writeMetadataToFile, setTimes) incorrectly skip the symlink guard and call os.Chown, os.Chmod, os.Chtimes, and birth-time syscalls through the planted link, bypassing os.Root confinement. Vendor-released patch is confirmed in v1.75.1; no active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: rclone v1.75.1, available at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/releases/tag/v1.75.1. Operators should upgrade immediately. If immediate upgrade is not feasible, the primary workaround is to remove the --links flag from all rclone invocations that sync from untrusted or externally-controlled sources; this eliminates the symlink materialization step that enables the attack. If --links must be retained, also remove --metadata to prevent chown/chmod escapes (modification time may still be affected via the normal directory workflow even without --metadata). Additionally, restrict source storage to trusted, access-controlled buckets/providers and audit destination host permissions to limit the blast radius of any out-of-scope metadata modification. Side effect of removing --links: symlinks in source will not be replicated as symlinks, which may break workflows relying on that behavior.

Technical ContextAI · show details
rclone is an open-source, cross-platform CLI tool for syncing data between local filesystems and cloud storage providers (S3, GCS, Azure Blob, Dropbox, etc.). The backend/local module optionally handles symbolic links by materializing .rclonelink source objects as real symlinks on the destination when --links is specified. The root cause (CWE-59, Improper Link Resolution Before File Access) lies in how the metadata application layer checks the translatedLink field on the Directory struct - a per-object flag - rather than the filesystem-level TranslateSymlinks option. This means that after a symlink is planted by the copy phase, the subsequent metadata phase treats the directory as a real directory, causing syscalls like os.Chown, os.Chmod, os.Chtimes, and the platform birth-time setter to resolve and follow the symlink, escaping the os.Root sandbox boundary. The GitHub commit diff confirms the fix adds a check for o.fs.opt.TranslateSymlinks in addition to o.translatedLink and switches birth-time writes to use O_NOFOLLOW semantics. CPE cpe:2.3:a:rclone:rclone:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all versions prior to 1.75.1.

AV:N because sync source is typically a remote endpoint; AC:H for non-default --links flag and two-phase exploit setup; PR:L since attacker must control source storage; UI:R as the victim must initiate the sync; S:C for out-of-destination metadata writes.

2DescriptionCVE.org
rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. Prior to 1.75.1, when backend/local runs with --links, a source .rclonelink object can plant a symlink in the destination and later directory metadata is applied through that path. MkdirMetadata, writeMetadataToFile, and setTimes operate when Directory.translatedLink=false, so os.Chown, os.Chmod, os.Chtimes, and birth-time handling can bypass os.Root confinement and follow the symlink. An attacker controlling source contents can therefore apply selected ownership, permissions, modification times, or birth times to a file or directory outside the destination, with --metadata required for chmod and chown while modification time is applied by the normal directory workflow. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-59 (Improper Link Resolution Before File Access), with CWE-281 as the downstream effect (permissions applied incorrectly).

Executive ViewAI
rclone prior to version 1.75.1 contains a symlink-escape vulnerability in its local backend that allows unauthorized modification of file ownership and permissions outside the intended sync destination when the --links option is enabled. Organizations using rclone for automated backups or data transfers-particularly in multi-user or shared hosting environments-face risk of privilege escalation, unauthorized access to critical files, and audit trail tampering.
