MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target to run an rclone FTP or S3 server that was created dynamically through the serve/start RC interface with a per-server proxyOpt.AuthProxy configured, while the process-global proxy.Opt.AuthProxy is empty (the default for RC-launched servers). Under that condition no authentication is needed: for FTP the attacker logs in as username 'anonymous' with any password against the fixed VFS; for S3 an AuthKey request is served the fixed RC fs rather than the proxy-selected backend. Limiting factors: servers started via the dedicated command-line subcommands (which set the global AuthProxy) are NOT vulnerable, so only the RC/serve-start deployment pattern with an auth proxy is affected, and only rclone 1.70.0 through 1.75.0. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 base score is 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), reflecting unauthenticated network access with high confidentiality and integrity impact but no availability impact - consistent with anonymous read/write to a fixed filesystem. However, real-world risk is gated by a specific and non-default operational precondition: the affected FTP/S3 server must be launched through the serve/start RC API with a per-server auth proxy configured while the process-global AuthProxy is empty. Dedicated command-line servers (rclone serve ftp/s3 --auth-proxy ...) that set the global option are explicitly NOT affected, which sharply narrows the exposed population. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is provided, so there is no evidence of active or automatable exploitation; the score is high because of impact, not because of demonstrated widespread abuse. Operators running rclone's RC-driven multi-tenant FTP/S3 servers with auth proxies should treat this as urgent, since the failure mode silently downgrades tenant isolation to anonymous or fixed-backend access. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator uses rclone's RC serve/start API to stand up a multi-tenant FTP server, expecting each user's credentials to be resolved by an auth proxy to their own isolated backend. Because the global AuthProxy is empty, the proxy is ignored and a remote attacker simply connects to the FTP port and logs in as 'anonymous' with any password, gaining access to the fixed backend filesystem; against the S3 variant with AuthKey they receive the fixed RC fs instead of the intended proxy-selected backend. No public exploit code is identified, but the attack requires only a standard FTP/S3 client. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 10, 2026
Authentication/authorization bypass in rclone's dynamic serve interface (versions 1.70.0 through 1.75.0) lets remote attackers reach a fixed filesystem instead of the per-request backend the operator intended. When an FTP or S3 server is spun up via the serve/start RC (remote control) API with a per-server proxyOpt.AuthProxy, the FTP and S3 constructors mistakenly consult the empty process-global proxy.Opt.AuthProxy, so the request-local auth proxy is silently ignored: FTP accepts anonymous logins with any password against the fixed VFS, and S3 with AuthKey serves the fixed RC fs rather than the proxy-selected backend. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and this is not in CISA KEV. Fixed in 1.75.1.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to rclone 1.75.1 (https://github.com/rclone/rclone/releases/tag/v1.75.1), which introduces a shared proxy.Provider that correctly honors the per-server auth proxy for FTP, HTTP, and S3 (fix commit 739403963abf6f58003c2becd5f7c4ad0d644153). If immediate upgrade is not possible, stop provisioning FTP/S3 servers through the serve/start RC API with per-server auth proxies, and instead run the dedicated command-line servers (rclone serve ftp/s3 with --auth-proxy) which set the process-global option and are unaffected; the trade-off is losing dynamic per-server provisioning via RC. As additional compensating controls, restrict network access to the RC endpoint and to the exposed FTP/S3 listeners to trusted hosts, and audit any fixed VFS exposed by these servers for sensitive data, since the bug can expose it anonymously. Technical ContextAI · show details
rclone (cpe:2.3:a:rclone:rclone) is a widely used Go command-line tool for syncing to cloud storage that can also expose backends as FTP, HTTP, or S3 servers. It supports an 'auth proxy' feature where an external program dynamically maps credentials to a per-user backend/VFS. When servers are created dynamically through the RC 'serve/start' API, each server carries its own proxyOpt.AuthProxy setting, but the FTP constructor in cmd/serve/ftp/ftp.go and the S3 constructor in cmd/serve/s3/server.go tested the global proxy.Opt.AuthProxy (set only by the dedicated CLI subcommands) rather than the request-local proxyOpt. This is the classic root cause of CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization): the wrong authorization decision variable is evaluated, so the intended per-request auth proxy never runs and the code falls through to the fixed VFS/RC fs. The fix commit (739403963) refactors this into a shared proxy.Provider abstraction whose IsProxy()/Get(ctx) methods consistently honor the per-server proxyOpt.AuthProxy across FTP, HTTP, and S3.

2DescriptionCVE.org
rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. From 1.70.0 until 1.75.1, the serve/start RC interface accepts per-server proxyOpt.AuthProxy settings, and the FTP and S3 constructors in cmd/serve/ftp/ftp.go and cmd/serve/s3/server.go incorrectly check the process-global proxy.Opt.AuthProxy value instead. When the global value is empty, the request-local authentication proxy is ignored: FTP falls back to the fixed filesystem with username anonymous and any password, while S3 with AuthKey serves the fixed RC fs rather than the backend selected by the proxy. The dedicated command-line servers that configure the global option are not affected. This issue is fixed in version 1.75.1.

Executive ViewAI
rclone versions 1.70.0-1.75.0 contain a critical authentication bypass in the serve interface (FTP and S3) that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to access configured filesystems. The vulnerability stems from per-server authentication proxies being silently ignored in favor of empty global settings, potentially exposing sensitive backend storage to any attacker with network access.
Apply vendor patch to version 1.75.1. Pending patching, disable FTP and S3 serve endpoints entirely or restrict network access to trusted networks only; do not expose serve listeners to untrusted clients.
