DescriptionCVE.org

MOOS-IvP through 24.8.1 contains a denial of service vulnerability in the Demuxer::addMuxPacket() function that trusts the packet count declared in mux headers without validation. Attackers can declare arbitrarily large packet counts to trigger unbounded memory allocation, exhausting system resources and causing service unavailability.

AnalysisAI

Unbounded memory allocation in MOOS-IvP through 24.8.1 allows unauthenticated network attackers to exhaust host system memory by sending crafted mux packets with arbitrarily large declared packet counts to the Demuxer::addMuxPacket() function. The demultiplexer trusts the integer value in the mux header without a ceiling, causing the process to reserve memory for each declared packet slot. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires network reachability to the MOOS communications infrastructure - specifically, the ability to publish to a MOOS variable that is consumed by a component calling Demuxer::addMuxPacket(). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) accurately reflects the remote, unauthenticated, zero-interaction nature of the DoS. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation An upstream fix is available via GitHub PR #129 (https://github.com/moos-ivp/moos-ivp/pull/129) and corresponding commit fc5649ac12915f66a9f09520cdb6b14bc6d77595; however, a tagged patched release version has not been independently confirmed from the available data - operators should build from the patched commit or monitor the upstream repository for a tagged release. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, identify all MOOS-IvP installations running version 24.8.1 or earlier and assess network exposure (whether systems are reachable from untrusted networks). …
