Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an application using the Amazon.Extensions.S3.Encryption (.NET) client with RSA envelope-key wrapping, where the attacker has authenticated access to both read encrypted objects AND modify those objects' metadata in the S3 bucket (reflected in PR:L). The attacker must force a padding downgrade by rewriting the object metadata's recorded padding scheme to legacy PKCS#1 v1.5, then mount an adaptive Bleichenbacher padding-oracle attack requiring many decryption queries (reflected in AT:P). LIMITING FACTORS: this is not remotely exploitable by an anonymous attacker - valid credentials with object read/write-metadata permissions are prerequisite; the oracle attack is non-automatable (per SSVC) and query-intensive; and only RSA-wrapped objects are affected, so deployments using AES/KMS key wrapping or already on versions 3.2.2/4.0.3 are not exposed.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority cryptographic vulnerability, not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.0 (MEDIUM) is well-calibrated: the vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N shows network reachability but requires authenticated access (PR:L - a user who can already read encrypted objects and alter their metadata) plus a specific attack requirement (AT:P), reflecting that a Bleichenbacher padding oracle attack needs many adaptive queries rather than a single shot. Impact is confidentiality-only (VC:H, VI:N, VA:N) - key recovery leads to object decryption but no integrity or availability loss. All exploitation signals point low: SSVC rates Exploitation 'none', Automatable 'no', and Technical Impact only 'partial'; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; no EPSS score was provided in the input. The signals are mutually consistent - a real, cryptographically sound flaw (Bleichenbacher is a well-established attack class) but one gated behind authenticated bucket access and a non-trivial, non-automatable oracle attack, placing it firmly as a scheduled-remediation item rather than an imminent widespread-exploitation threat. Note the privileged precondition means this is primarily an insider or compromised-credential / cross-tenant risk rather than an anonymous internet threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user (or an attacker with stolen credentials) who can read encrypted objects in an S3 bucket and modify their metadata edits an object's stored padding-scheme field to downgrade it to legacy PKCS#1 v1.5. They then repeatedly submit modified ciphertexts to the decrypting application, using the differences in responses as a Bleichenbacher padding oracle to recover the RSA-wrapped envelope key and ultimately decrypt the targeted object. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires many adaptive queries, so it is practical but not point-and-click.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Authenticated attackers with read and metadata-write access to encrypted objects in Amazon S3 can force a padding downgrade in the Amazon.Extensions.S3.Encryption .NET client, then use a Bleichenbacher padding oracle to recover the RSA-wrapped envelope key and decrypt the object. Affected versions are before 3.2.2 and 4.0.x before 4.0.3; the 1.x and 2.x lines are unpatched and must be migrated. Exploitation requires valid credentials, metadata modification permissions, and many decryption queries, so no public exploit identified at time of analysis, consistent with SSVC Exploitation: none.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Amazon.Extensions.S3.Encryption 3.2.2 or 4.0.3; these are vendor-released patches. Users on 1.x or 2.x must migrate to 3.2.2 or 4.0.3 because those lines will not be patched. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict S3 principals so that no role can both read encrypted objects and modify their metadata: split permissions, deny s3:PutObject and s3:CopyObject metadata writes for readers, and monitor for metadata changes. This may break legitimate copy and tagging workflows. Prefer AES/KMS envelope-key wrapping over RSA wrapping where the application supports it; note cost and latency trade-offs. See the AWS Security Bulletin and GitHub advisory for details. No vendor-released patch exists for 1.x or 2.x.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is in the Amazon.Extensions.S3.Encryption .NET library's envelope encryption workflow. Objects are encrypted with a data key, which is then wrapped with RSA and stored in object metadata; the metadata also records the padding scheme used. Because an attacker with object metadata write permissions can change that recorded scheme to legacy PKCS#1 v1.5, the library will process the RSA-wrapped key with a vulnerable padding mode. PKCS#1 v1.5 is susceptible to Bleichenbacher's adaptive chosen-ciphertext attack, which uses distinguishable padding-error responses as an oracle to recover the plaintext envelope key. CWE-204 (Observable Response Discrepancy) describes the root class: the oracle leaks information via differing responses. Only RSA envelope-key wrapping is affected; AES/KMS wrapping and fixed versions 3.2.2/4.0.3 are not exposed. The assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N reflects network access, high attack complexity, low privileges, and confidentiality-only impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

A remote user who can read encrypted objects in the S3 bucket can force a padding downgrade by altering the padding scheme recorded in an object's metadata to legacy PKCS#1 v1.5. Since this padding scheme is susceptible to the well-known Bleichenbacher attack, the user can use a PKCS#1 v1.5 padding oracle to recover the RSA-wrapped envelope key and decrypt the object.

To remediate this issue, we recommend that users upgrade to version 3.2.2 or 4.0.3. The 1.x and 2.x lines will not be patched, users of those lines need to migrate to 3.2.2 or 4.0.3.
