MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a specific non-default Apache configuration: mod_vhost_alias must be in use with VirtualDocumentRoot (or VirtualScriptAlias) configured using a hostname format specifier (e.g. %0/%1), AND LimitRequestFieldSize must be raised above its default value of 8192 bytes so that a Host header exceeding 8192 bytes is accepted rather than rejected. Against default configurations the oversized Host header is dropped by the default LimitRequestFieldSize, so exploitation is NOT possible out-of-the-box. No authentication is required (a remote client can send the request), but the hard limiting factor is this operator-set configuration, which is uncommon and dramatically narrows the realistically exploitable population. Affected versions are Apache HTTP Server through 2.4.68 on all platforms; 2.4.69 fixes it. |
| Impact | No CVSS vector, EPSS, KEV, or POC data is provided, so quantitative exploitation signals are entirely absent - this is the dominant uncertainty here. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and there is no evidence of active exploitation. The headline product (Apache HTTP Server) is ubiquitous, which would normally elevate priority, but the vulnerability is gated behind a non-default configuration: VirtualDocumentRoot must use a hostname format specifier AND LimitRequestFieldSize must be raised above its 8192-byte default. Both conditions are operator-controlled and uncommon in typical deployments, which sharply narrows the real-world exposed population despite the huge install base. The impact is a confirmed denial of service with only 'potential' arbitrary code execution per the vendor description - stack-based overflow RCE on modern Apache builds is non-trivial due to stack protections, so the RCE outcome is unconfirmed and should not be treated as established. Net: this is a credible but conditional issue - worth patching promptly on affected 2.4.x servers, but it is not a drop-everything mass-exploitation event absent evidence of in-the-wild use or a working exploit. Verify your own httpd.conf for the specific VirtualDocumentRoot/LimitRequestFieldSize combination to determine whether you are actually exposed. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies an Apache HTTP Server (≤2.4.68) whose administrator has enabled VirtualDocumentRoot with a hostname format specifier and raised LimitRequestFieldSize above the default 8192 bytes. The attacker sends a crafted HTTP request with a Host header exceeding 8192 bytes, overflowing a stack buffer in mod_vhost_alias to crash the worker (denial of service) and potentially achieve code execution. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in the mod_vhost_alias module of Apache HTTP Server through 2.4.68 allows a remote, unauthenticated client to crash the server or potentially execute arbitrary code by sending an HTTP request whose Host header exceeds 8192 bytes. The flaw is not reachable in default deployments: the operator must have configured VirtualDocumentRoot (or VirtualScriptAlias) with a hostname format specifier such as %0 or %1 and must have raised LimitRequestFieldSize above its 8192-byte default, a non-default and uncommon combination that is reflected in the assessed vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. No KEV listing, EPSS score, or public exploit code was available at time of analysis, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis; the dominant uncertainty is the absence of any quantitative exploitation signal, while the real-world exploitability is sharply constrained by the required operator-set configuration. Users are advised to upgrade to 2.4.69, which fixes the issue.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade Apache HTTP Server to 2.4.69 (vendor-released patch: 2.4.69), which resolves the stack buffer overflow - see the vendor advisory https://httpd.apache.org/security/vulnerabilities_24.html. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to restore LimitRequestFieldSize to its default of 8192 bytes (or any value at or below 8192): the oversized Host header is then rejected before mod_vhost_alias interpolation runs, so the vulnerable code path is never reached - the trade-off is that clients legitimately sending very long headers or requests will start receiving 400/414 errors, so this should be validated against real traffic first. A second option is to remove hostname format specifiers (%0, %1, %-N, %N.M) from VirtualDocumentRoot and VirtualScriptAlias and use a fixed path or an interpolation scheme that does not expand untrusted Host data, at the cost of losing dynamic per-hostname document-root mapping for mass virtual hosting. If mod_vhost_alias is not genuinely needed, disabling or unloading the module entirely eliminates the exposure with no other functional loss beyond the dynamic vhost feature. Because the assessed attack is a stack overflow with potential code execution, deployments cannot upgrade should also consider tightening process isolation for httpd (for example running under a restricted service account or container with a read-only filesystem and, where feasible, fronting the server with a reverse proxy that enforces a sane maximum Host header length) so that a successful overflow yields limited control - none of these compensate for the memory-corruption risk itself, so upgrading remains strongly preferred.

Technical ContextAI · show details
mod_vhost_alias is the Apache HTTP Server module that dynamically derives virtual-host document roots from request data instead of relying on one <VirtualHost> block per host. Its VirtualDocumentRoot and VirtualScriptAlias directives accept interpolation format specifiers - %0 for the whole hostname, %1..%N for successive dot-separated labels, and %-N / %N.M variants - which are expanded at request time into a filesystem path. The interpolation code copies the expanded hostname-derived string into a fixed-size stack buffer (CWE-121, stack-based buffer overflow); because the buffer's sizing assumes the default maximum request-field length, a Host header larger than 8192 bytes overruns it. The default LimitRequestFieldSize of 8192 bytes is what normally shields this code path, since Apache rejects any header field longer than the limit before the interpolation runs; the bug only becomes reachable when an administrator has both enabled hostname-based mod_vhost_alias interpolation and explicitly increased LimitRequestFieldSize (or set it to 0/unlimited) to accept very long headers, typically for legacy or third-party clients. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_http_server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the Apache HTTP Server product line affected through 2.4.68 on all platforms; the impact class spans denial of service (process crash) and memory-corruption-driven code execution, consistent with the high C/I/A impact in the assessed vector.
