MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a Fluent Bit instance using the out_forward output plugin in Secure Forward mode with Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key configured - this is not the default output path. The attacker must control the configured upstream forward destination or be able to impersonate/MITM that TCP connection so it can respond to the handshake. Reliable remote code execution additionally requires a build compiled without a stack canary, or a separate memory-disclosure primitive; builds with a stack canary reliably terminate (denial of service only). The opt-in --supervisor mode with fork-only respawns further weakens hardened builds by preserving the canary and address layout across restarts, enabling repeated crash-or-survive probing. Limiting factors: non-default Secure Forward configuration, required adversarial network position as the forward peer, and target build hardening. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.2 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated stack buffer overflow with full CIA impact, but several signals temper the real-world urgency. The AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present) metric is the key qualifier the raw '9.2' obscures: exploitation is not fire-and-forget against any Fluent Bit instance - the attacker must occupy the position of the out_forward Secure Forward destination (control it or impersonate/MITM it) AND the target must be configured with Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public exploit code is present in the provided intelligence, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' rather than an actively exploited threat. Critically, the description itself scopes the impact: 'protected builds reliably terminate' (a canary turns RCE into a denial-of-service crash), and reliable RCE requires either a build compiled without a stack canary or a companion memory-disclosure primitive; the --supervisor fork-only mode is a secondary enabler that lets an attacker repeatedly probe a hardened build because respawns preserve the canary and ASLR layout. Net: a genuinely serious memory-corruption bug in very widely deployed software, but real-world exploitability is gated by a non-default output configuration, an adversarial network position, and target build hardening - making it a high-priority patch for anyone running out_forward with Secure Forward, and lower urgency for the majority of deployments that do not. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who controls or can impersonate (via MITM or DNS/routing hijack) the upstream server that a Fluent Bit out_forward plugin connects to in Secure Forward mode responds during the initial handshake with a PONG message whose reason field (PONG[2]) is an oversized MessagePack string. secure_forward_pong memcpy's it into a 32-byte stack buffer without type or length validation, overwriting stack control data. On a build without a stack canary (or paired with an info-leak), this yields remote code execution as the Fluent Bit process user; on hardened builds it reliably crashes the process. No public exploit code was identified in the provided intelligence. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in Fluent Bit's out_forward Secure Forward plugin (versions 0.11.0 through releases prior to 5.0.8) lets an attacker who controls or can impersonate the configured forwarding destination overwrite stack memory while Fluent Bit processes the handshake PONG response. The vulnerable path is only reachable when the out_forward output plugin is configured in Secure Forward mode with Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key - not the default output configuration - and the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) plus the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) both characterize it as an unauthenticated network attack that depends on specific deployment preconditions. Impact ranges from reliable process termination on builds compiled with a stack canary to full remote code execution as the Fluent Bit process user on builds lacking canary protection or where a memory-disclosure primitive exists; the opt-in --supervisor mode with fork-only respawns further weakens hardened builds by preserving canary and address layout across restarts. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is fixed in version 5.0.8.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Fluent Bit 5.0.8 or later (release notes and binaries at https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/releases/tag/v5.0.8), which corresponds to the upstream fix in PR https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/pull/11945 (commit https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/commit/45486556be9d023e194665e243f156b228e195e0); see GHSA-jrp8-r9hx-gf73 (https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/security/advisories/GHSA-jrp8-r9hx-gf73) for the vendor advisory. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to stop using the out_forward plugin in Secure Forward mode with Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key where those destinations are not trusted, since the vulnerable code path is unreachable otherwise - the trade-off is loss of authenticated transport for log forwarding, requiring an alternative such as a TLS-terminating relay. Where Secure Forward must stay enabled, restrict outbound reachability of the Fluent Bit process to a strictly allow-listed set of forward peer IPs and ports, and protect the TCP session from interception or spoofing (for example via network segmentation or an authenticated tunnel), accepting that this reduces but does not eliminate risk if a permitted peer is compromised. Disable the opt-in --supervisor mode with fork-only respawns, as it preserves canary and address layout and materially increases the chance of successful exploitation on hardened builds; note this removes automatic fork-based recovery and may affect restart behavior. Ensure builds are compiled with stack-protector (for example -fstack-protector-strong) and full ASLR to force a crash instead of code execution, understanding this downgrades the impact to denial of service rather than fixing the overflow, and plan the upgrade as the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Fluent Bit's out_forward plugin implements the Fluentd Secure Forward protocol, which negotiates a shared key (Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key) and exchanges HELO/PING/PONG messages encoded as MessagePack. In plugins/out_forward/forward.c, the function secure_forward_pong copies the server-controlled PONG[2] reason field into a fixed 32-byte stack buffer named msg using memcpy without first validating the MessagePack object type or its length, which is the classic root cause for CWE-121 (stack-based buffer overflow). Because the destination is a network peer that supplies the PONG frame, an attacker in position to control or impersonate that peer can present an oversized reason value and write past the end of msg into stack control data such as the return address or saved registers. On builds compiled with a stack canary (for example -fstack-protector-strong), the overflow is typically caught and the process aborts, giving denial of service; on builds built without canary protection, or where a separate memory-disclosure primitive is available to defeat ASLR, the overwrite can be leveraged for remote code execution as the Fluent Bit process user. The opt-in --supervisor mode is an aggravating factor because fork-only respawns re-create children with the same canary value and address layout, allowing repeated crash-or-survive probing against an otherwise hardened binary; ordinary exec-based or service-manager restarts do not preserve that state. The upstream fix (PR #11945, commit 45486556be9d023e194665e243f156b228e195e0, released in v5.0.8) adds MessagePack type validation in secure_forward_pong, bounds the copy to sizeof(msg)-1 with explicit NUL termination, and hardens adjacent parsing in secure_forward_set_ping, secure_forward_handshake, and forward_read_ack with type checks and corrected length-format specifiers.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Fluent Bit is a fast and lightweight logs, metrics, and traces processor for Linux, BSD, macOS, and Windows. From 0.11.0 until 5.0.8, plugins/out_forward/forward.c secure_forward_pong copies the server-controlled PONG[2] reason into the 32-byte stack buffer msg with memcpy without checking its MessagePack type or length. An attacker who controls or can impersonate an out_forward Secure Forward destination configured with Shared_Key or Empty_Shared_Key can send an oversized reason during the first handshake and overwrite stack control data. Protected builds reliably terminate, while builds without a stack canary or with a disclosure can allow remote code execution as the Fluent Bit process user. When the opt-in --supervisor mode is used, fork-only respawns preserve the canary and address layout, allowing repeated crash-or-survive probes to support code execution on a hardened build; ordinary exec-based or service-manager restarts do not preserve that state. This issue is fixed in version 5.0.8.

Executive ViewAI
Fluent Bit deployments that use the out_forward plugin in Secure Forward mode face a critical memory-corruption flaw that can stop log forwarding or, on less protected builds, allow an attacker to execute code with the Fluent Bit service account's privileges. This matters because Fluent Bit frequently carries security, operational, and compliance telemetry, so a compromised or disrupted pipeline can blind monitoring, break audit trails, and undermine downstream trust across the organization. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the affected configuration is opt-in rather than default, so leadership should focus on locating and hardening any such deployments immediately.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable out_forward Secure Forward mode where not required; where required, restrict network egress to trusted forwarding destinations, enforce TLS/mTLS and strong shared-key validation, segment Fluent Bit from untrusted networks, run as a least-privilege service account, enable stack canaries/ASLR on builds where possible, and monitor for crashes, restarts, and anomalous PONG/handshake traffic; apply vendor workarounds if released.
