| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to load or run the X-CLIP checkpoint conversion/parsing functionality in Hugging Face Transformers against an attacker-supplied checkpoint file (the deserialization occurs during checkpoint parsing). The required limiting factor is user interaction (UI:R): the target must actively open a malicious file or visit a malicious page that causes the crafted checkpoint to be loaded - there is no network-remote, zero-click path. Attack vector is local (AV:L), so the malicious checkpoint must reach and be processed on the victim's host. Risk is effectively confined to workflows that ingest untrusted or third-party model checkpoints; environments that only load trusted, internally produced checkpoints are not realistically exposed. |
| Impact | This is a CWE-502 deserialization-to-RCE flaw in Hugging Face Transformers' X-CLIP checkpoint conversion path, rated CVSS 7.8 (High). The CVSS 3.0 vector CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H is internally consistent and credible: it is a local/file-borne attack (AV:L) requiring user interaction (UI:R) to load a malicious checkpoint, with no authentication (PR:N) and full CIA impact on the current process. The signals point to MODERATE real-world risk rather than emergency priority. Exploitation probability is low (EPSS 0.37%, 29th percentile), the CVE is NOT on CISA KEV, and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. The high severity is driven by impact (code execution) and trivial technical complexity (AC:L), not by remote reachability; because it requires the victim to open an attacker-supplied checkpoint, it is a supply-chain / social-engineering vector rather than a mass-exploitable network bug. Note a potential tension for triagers: although PR:N marks it unauthenticated, exploitation is gated entirely by UI:R (a user must load the malicious file), so raw PR:N overstates ease of exploitation. This is a genuine but conditional risk best prioritized for environments that ingest untrusted model checkpoints. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a malicious X-CLIP model checkpoint on a model hub or sends it to a victim, and the victim runs Transformers' checkpoint conversion/loading routine on it. Because the checkpoint is deserialized without validation of untrusted data (CWE-502), attacker-controlled payload executes arbitrary code in the context of the loading process. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, but the technique (malicious pickle-style checkpoint) is well understood and complexity is low (AC:L). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Deserialization of untrusted data in Hugging Face Transformers' X-CLIP checkpoint conversion path (CPE-tagged to 5.0.0rc0) lets an attacker who supplies a crafted checkpoint execute arbitrary code in the context of the process that parses it. This is not a zero-click network attack: the CVSS 3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R means the malicious file must reach the victim's host and the victim must actively open it or trigger a page that loads it, so exposure is effectively limited to workflows that ingest third-party or otherwise untrusted model checkpoints. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, EPSS is low at 0.37% (29th percentile), and there is no CISA KEV listing; the vendor advisory is ZDI-25-1144 (ZDI-CAN-28308).
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so remediation must be compensating and process-oriented. Until a fixed Transformers release is published and confirmed against ZDI-25-1144, stop running X-CLIP checkpoint conversion on any checkpoint that did not originate from a trusted internal source, and treat downloaded community checkpoints as executable content rather than inert weights. Where conversion is unavoidable, prefer non-executable formats - require safetensors equivalents, or force weights-only loading (torch.load(..., weights_only=True) semantics / weights_only unpickler) - accepting the trade-off that checkpoints relying on custom pickled classes or legacy layouts may fail to convert and will need manual remapping. Run the conversion step inside a disposable, low-privilege container or VM with no network egress, no mounted cloud credentials, and no access to production model stores; this contains a successful deserialization payload at the cost of extra operational overhead per conversion job. Verify checkpoint provenance with published hashes/signatures before parsing, and gate any automatic model-ingestion pipeline so a human approves externally sourced checkpoints. Monitor https://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-25-1144/ and the Hugging Face Transformers release notes for the patched version, and apply it as soon as it is published.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data) in the X-CLIP model checkpoint conversion code of Hugging Face Transformers. X-CLIP is a vision-language (contrastive image-text) architecture, and the library ships conversion utilities that read third-party checkpoint files and remap their weights into Transformers format. Legacy checkpoint formats of this kind are typically pickle-based (e.g., torch.load-style object graphs), so a checkpoint is not passive data - parsing it can instantiate arbitrary classes and invoke reducers, which is exactly how a crafted file escapes the data plane into code execution. The root cause is the absence of proper validation/sanitization of the user-supplied checkpoint before deserialization, allowing attacker-controlled objects to be reconstructed during parsing. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:huggingface:transformers:5.0.0:rc0 confirms the affected build tracked by the advisory is the 5.0.0 release candidate line; the underlying issue class is not unique to X-CLIP and applies to any pickle-based conversion path, whereas the safer design is weights-only loading or the non-executable safetensors format.

Malicious checkpoint is processed locally (AV:L) and needs the victim to load it (UI:R); no auth is required to craft the file (PR:N), and deserialization yields full code execution (C/I/A:H).

DescriptionCVE.org
Hugging Face Transformers X-CLIP Checkpoint Conversion Deserialization of Untrusted Data Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Hugging Face Transformers. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of checkpoints. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in deserialization of untrusted data. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-28308.

Executive ViewAI
Hugging Face Transformers 5.0.0rc0 creates a code-execution risk for teams that convert third-party X-CLIP model checkpoints, potentially compromising the model engineering or data science workstation performing the conversion. The exposure is limited because a crafted checkpoint must reach the host and a user must actively load it, so leadership should focus on model provenance, trusted sources, and isolated conversion rather than broad emergency response. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the absence of a vendor-released patch means interim controls are essential until a fixed release is available.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; restrict X-CLIP checkpoint conversion to trusted, signed, or internally vetted model files; perform conversion in an isolated sandbox or low-privilege container; disable or block the X-CLIP checkpoint conversion path where not required; scan and quarantine untrusted checkpoints; monitor ZDI-25-1144/ZDI-CAN-28308 and vendor channels for a fixed release.

Attack Technique
Insecure deserialization occurs when an application converts serialized data (a stream of bytes representing an object's state) back into a living object without proper validation.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
