| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires all of the following: the OpenClaw host must be Windows and running in exec allowlist mode; a PowerShell command must have been previously approved that references an executable by bare name (unqualified, PATH-resolved); lower-trust content must be able to write an executable with that same approved basename into an agent-writable workspace directory; and the attacker must be able to steer the approved agent into re-running that command. Limiting factors: local attack vector (AV:L), high complexity plus an attack requirement (AC:H/AT:P), an existing operator allowlist approval and agent-steering interaction (PR:L/UI:P), and non-default reliance on bare executable names - the documented workarounds (avoid bare names, keep executables out of workspaces) directly remove the precondition. The approved executable itself does not need to be replaced. |
| Impact | This is a real but heavily-gated privilege/execution issue rather than a broadly exploitable critical flaw, and the signals are internally consistent. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:P) correctly reflects that exploitation is local, high-complexity, requires an attack precondition (an executable placed in an agent-writable workspace), needs prior privileges (PR:L - the attacker must supply lower-trust content the agent will act on), and depends on user/operator interaction (UI:P - a pre-existing exec-allowlist approval and a steered command). Technical impact is high (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H = arbitrary code execution as the Gateway/node-host user), which is why the 5.4 base score feels low relative to RCE - the score is depressed by the compounding preconditions, not by weak impact. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so there is no evidence of active or automatable exploitation; this reads as a targeted, chain-dependent weakness. CWE-426 (Untrusted Search Path / workspace-shadow) is the correct classification. Priority is MEDIUM at most: the impact is genuine RCE, but the requirement for a prior allowlist approval, agent-writable workspace, bare-executable-name usage, AND Windows-specific PowerShell analysis makes real-world exploitation narrow. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker feeds lower-trust content to an OpenClaw agent on a Windows host running in exec allowlist mode, causing a malicious executable with an already-approved basename (e.g. a common tool name) to be written into the agent-writable workspace directory. The attacker then steers the agent into running a previously-approved PowerShell command that references the executable by bare name; OpenClaw resolves and runs the workspace copy instead of the allowlisted PATH binary, executing arbitrary code as the Gateway or node-host user. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the approved executable itself never has to be replaced. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Exec allowlist bypass in OpenClaw (npm-distributed agent runtime) causes Windows hosts running in exec allowlist mode to launch the wrong binary: a PowerShell command approved by bare executable name is analyzed and allowed against the PATH-resolved path, but at execution time a same-named executable planted in an agent-writable workspace is run instead, yielding arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the Gateway or node-host user. Affected versions are 2026.2.26 through 2026.7.1; the vendor rates it CVSS 4.0 5.4, while our assessment maps to CVSS 3.1 AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, i.e. a real but heavily gated privilege/execution issue requiring a local, low-privileged actor with an existing operator allowlist approval and the ability to steer the agent. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry; version 2026.7.1 contains the vendor-released fix.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade OpenClaw to 2026.7.1 or later, which corrects the analysis/execution path-resolution mismatch (see https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw/security/advisories/GHSA-rgjw-6v73-php6 and https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openclaw-before-2026.7.1-allowlist-bypass-via-workspace-shadows). If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply the documented workarounds together: first, rewrite every approved PowerShell command in exec allowlist mode to use fully-qualified absolute paths instead of bare executable names, so no PATH/CWD re-resolution can occur - the trade-off is more verbose allowlist entries that must be updated whenever an install path changes; second, keep executable files out of any workspace the agent can write to and, where feasible, deny execute permissions or mount agent workspaces with no-execute semantics so lower-trust content cannot plant a shadow binary - the trade-off is that legitimate agent tooling which writes and runs helper scripts inside the workspace will break. Because exploitation also depends on steering the agent into re-running an approved command, tightening which content the agent may process and requiring explicit operator confirmation for PowerShell execution reduces exposure, but these are compensating measures only and do not fix the underlying path-resolution defect.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-426 (Untrusted Search Path): OpenClaw's PowerShell command analysis and its execution step resolve a bare executable name at different times and against different search contexts. During analysis in exec allowlist mode, the runtime resolves the unqualified basename through PATH and approves that exact resolved executable, but the command is then executed using the still-bare name, so Windows' process search order (which checks the current/workspace directory before PATH) can satisfy the lookup with a different file. The approved executable itself is never replaced or modified - the attacker only needs to drop a same-named binary into a directory the agent can write to and then get the already-approved command re-run. OpenClaw is a Node.js/npm agent runtime that brokers tool execution for an LLM agent, so untrusted content processed by the agent (prompt-injected or fetched material) is the realistic vector for planting the shadow file and steering the command. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with the fix boundary at 2026.7.1; exploitation is constrained to Windows hosts, exec allowlist mode, and workflows that reference executables by bare name.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
OpenClaw is an npm-distributed agent runtime. In versions >= 2026.2.26 and < 2026.7.1, PowerShell command analysis on Windows hosts running in exec allowlist mode could approve an exact executable resolved from PATH but subsequently execute a same-named executable located in the workspace directory. If lower-trust content can place an executable with an approved basename into an agent-writable workspace and steer an approved PowerShell command that uses a bare executable name, OpenClaw may run the workspace file instead of the allowlisted path, executing arbitrary code with the privileges of the Gateway or node-host user. The issue does not require replacement of the approved executable itself. Version 2026.7.1 contains a fix; as a workaround, avoid bare executable names in approved PowerShell commands and keep executable files out of agent-writable workspaces.
