7.0 HIGH

Network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), but AC:H because it needs a validating resolver plus attacker-controlled zone and heap-corruption reliability; DoS is the confirmed A:H impact while RCE is only possible (C:L/I:L), no scope change (S:U).

DescriptionCVE.org

In NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including 1.26.0, a vulnerability was found in the DNSSEC validator that enables denial of service and possible remote code execution as a result of digesting DNSKEYs. A DNSKEY with an owner compression pointer to its own RDATA can overflow the digest buffer. Remote code execution is possible through attacker controlled data. An adversary can exploit the vulnerability by controlling a malicious zone and querying a vulnerable Unbound.

AnalysisAI

A crafted DNSKEY whose owner name is a compression pointer into its own RDATA overflows the digest buffer in the DNSSEC validator of NLnet Labs Unbound 1.26.0 and earlier, letting an attacker who controls an authoritative zone crash a validating recursive resolver and, depending on heap layout, potentially execute code with attacker-influenced data. Exploitation is unauthenticated over the network per the CVSS vectors but is gated on DNSSEC validation being active and on inducing the resolver to query a name in the attacker's zone; the independently assessed impact is primarily denial of service (availability High, confidentiality and integrity Low), with remote code execution only possible rather than demonstrated. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the target to run NLnet Labs Unbound (≤1.26.0) as a DNSSEC-validating recursive resolver - DNSSEC validation must be active for the vulnerable DNSKEY-digesting code path to execute. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor-issued CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VC/VI/VA:H, SC/SI/SA:H, score 9.1) frames this as a critical, low-complexity, unauthenticated network vulnerability, but several signals argue for a more measured real-world risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation No fixed release version is specified in the available data, so the first step is to check the vendor advisory https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/unbound/CVE-2026-81642.txt for the patched build and upgrade as soon as it is published; patched releases after 1.26.0 should be treated as the primary fix and no specific version number should be assumed until confirmed there. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Unbound instances and identify any running version 1.26.0 or earlier, restrict recursive DNS access to trusted clients only, enable detailed logging and alerting for resolver crashes and anomalous DNSKEY activity, and consider temporarily disabling DNSSEC validation where operationally acceptable to avoid the vulnerable code path. …
