Exploitation Conditions

Requires the target to run NLnet Labs Unbound (≤1.26.0) as a DNSSEC-validating recursive resolver - DNSSEC validation must be active for the vulnerable DNSKEY-digesting code path to execute. The attacker must control or compromise an authoritative zone (or otherwise inject responses) serving a specially crafted DNSKEY whose owner-name uses a DNS message compression pointer referencing its own RDATA, and must induce the victim resolver to query and validate a name within that zone. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated on the DNSSEC-validation configuration and on getting the resolver to resolve into the attacker's zone; confirmed impact is denial of service, while remote code execution is only 'possible' and depends on heap layout and attacker-controlled data, materially raising exploitation complexity beyond a simple crash.

Impact

The vendor-issued CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VC/VI/VA:H, SC/SI/SA:H, score 9.1) frames this as a critical, low-complexity, unauthenticated network vulnerability, but several signals argue for a more measured real-world risk. Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the vendor sets E:U (unreported/proof-of-concept not confirmed), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was supplied, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation. The description explicitly hedges impact as 'denial of service and possible remote code execution,' meaning only DoS is confirmed while RCE is speculative and unproven - this undercuts the VC:H/VI:H (confidentiality/integrity) impact ratings, which are best treated as aspirational. The subsequent-system ratings (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) are overstated: the overflow occurs in-process within the resolver with no scope change to another security authority. The AC:L rating is also questionable - successful exploitation requires the attacker to operate a malicious authoritative zone AND induce a validating Unbound instance to query and DNSSEC-validate a DNSKEY from it, then convert a heap overflow into control flow, which is closer to AC:H. Net: a genuinely serious memory-corruption bug in ubiquitous DNS-resolver infrastructure that warrants prompt patching, but current evidence points to a DoS-leaning issue without demonstrated RCE or in-the-wild use, not a drop-everything emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up (or compromises) an authoritative DNS zone and crafts a malicious DNSKEY record whose owner-name compression pointer references its own RDATA. When a targeted Unbound resolver with DNSSEC validation enabled resolves a name in that zone and digests the DNSKEY during validation, the malformed compression pointer overflows the heap digest buffer, crashing the resolver (confirmed DoS) and potentially allowing attacker-controlled data to corrupt heap memory for code execution (unproven). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026

A crafted DNSKEY whose owner name is a compression pointer into its own RDATA overflows the digest buffer in the DNSSEC validator of NLnet Labs Unbound 1.26.0 and earlier, letting an attacker who controls an authoritative zone crash a validating recursive resolver and, depending on heap layout, potentially execute code with attacker-influenced data. Exploitation is unauthenticated over the network per the CVSS vectors but is gated on DNSSEC validation being active and on inducing the resolver to query a name in the attacker's zone; the independently assessed impact is primarily denial of service (availability High, confidentiality and integrity Low), with remote code execution only possible rather than demonstrated. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) were identified at time of analysis, although the vendor rates the issue 9.1 under CVSS 4.0 and an advisory has been published.

RemediationAI

No fixed release version is specified in the available data, so the first step is to check the vendor advisory https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/unbound/CVE-2026-81642.txt for the patched build and upgrade as soon as it is published; patched releases after 1.26.0 should be treated as the primary fix and no specific version number should be assumed until confirmed there. Until a patched build is deployed, the highest-value compensating control is to remove the vulnerable code path by disabling DNSSEC validation (for example by removing the validator from module-config or running in permissive mode), accepting the significant trade-off that validation-aware attacks such as cache poisoning and forged NXDOMAIN become possible - this is a stopgap, not a steady state. Complement that by restricting recursion to trusted clients with access-control rules and, where practical, disabling open recursion so an attacker must already be a legitimate client to steer the resolver into a malicious zone; this limits who can trigger the bug but does not stop an authorized client from doing so. Run the resolver as an unprivileged, chrooted/seccomp-sandboxed account with ASLR enabled to raise the bar for turning the heap overflow into code execution, and monitor unbound for repeated crashes or restarts as an indication of exploitation attempts. Blocking or filtering DNS responses at the network edge is not a reliable mitigation because compression pointers into RDATA are syntactically valid on the wire and would require deep DNS-aware inspection to detect, which most middleboxes cannot perform without breaking legitimate traffic.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw lives in Unbound's DNSSEC validation path, specifically the code that digests DNSKEY records when building/validating DS-matching data (CWE-122, heap-based buffer overflow). DNS name compression (RFC 1035) permits an owner name to be encoded as a pointer to an earlier offset in the message; Unbound's parsing does not adequately reject a DNSKEY whose owner-name compression pointer resolves into that record's own RDATA, and the resulting length/position calculation writes past the end of the allocated digest buffer. Because the overflow bytes derive from attacker-supplied zone data, the primitive is a classic heap overflow that begins as a crash and theoretically extends to code execution if the heap can be groomed. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:nlnet_labs:unbound:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is an unconstrained wildcard, so version scope must come from the vendor statement (up to and including 1.26.0). Note the scoring divergence: the vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H (9.1) assumes trivial exploitation, whereas independent analysis re-scores it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:H because exploitation requires DNSSEC validation to be enabled, control of (or injection into) an authoritative zone, and luring the resolver into that zone, with reliable code execution contingent on heap layout and attacker-controlled data.

DescriptionCVE.org

In NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including 1.26.0, a vulnerability was found in the DNSSEC validator that enables denial of service and possible remote code execution as a result of digesting DNSKEYs. A DNSKEY with an owner compression pointer to its own RDATA can overflow the digest buffer. Remote code execution is possible through attacker controlled data. An adversary can exploit the vulnerability by controlling a malicious zone and querying a vulnerable Unbound.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

NLnet Labs Unbound 1.26.0 and earlier has a critical DNSSEC validation flaw that can let an attacker who controls an authoritative DNS zone crash a validating recursive resolver, with a possible but not demonstrated path to code execution depending on heap layout. Organizations using affected Unbound resolvers for DNSSEC validation face disruption to DNS resolution and potential service outages; because exploitation is unauthenticated over the network per the CVSS vectors and no vendor-released patch was identified at the time of analysis, leadership should prioritize immediate exposure reduction and continuity planning. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the vendor's critical severity rating and published advisory warrant urgent action.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict recursive query access to trusted clients; disable DNSSEC validation where operationally acceptable; segment or isolate affected Unbound 1.26.0-and-earlier resolvers; monitor for resolver crashes; maintain redundant resolvers; and apply vendor workaround when published.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

A heap overflow occurs when a program writes data beyond the bounds of a buffer allocated in the heap memory region.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
