| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation REQUIRES the attacker to already control a compromised (or rogue) intermediate certificate authority that the target Apple device trusts - this is the explicit prerequisite in the description, not an incidental detail. Given that, the attacker can issue certificates with arbitrary extended key usages that the flawed validation logic accepts. Affects unpatched iOS/iPadOS <26.7 and <27, macOS <15.8/<26.7/<27, tvOS <27, watchOS <27, and visionOS <27. The dominant limiting factor is the CA-compromise requirement: without a trusted-but-malicious intermediate CA there is no attack, which sharply narrows the realistic threat population despite the PR:N/UI:N network vector. |
| Impact | This is a certificate validation flaw (CWE-295) in Apple's cross-platform certificate handling, scored CVSS 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) by the vendor. The high base score is driven by network vector, no privileges, and high confidentiality+integrity impact. However, multiple secondary signals argue against treating this as an emergency: EPSS is only 0.14% (4th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code is identified - so the status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Most importantly, the description embeds a substantial precondition the CVSS PR:N does not capture: the attacker must ALREADY possess a compromised intermediate certificate authority. That is a rare, high-value prerequisite that in practice makes this a targeted-scenario weakness rather than a broadly automatable one. The vector's AC:L is therefore arguably optimistic - obtaining a compromised intermediate CA is a significant real-world barrier, so effective attack complexity is higher than the score implies. Net: genuinely serious for the narrow population who face a CA-compromise threat model (enterprise MDM, high-assurance TLS pinning), but low likelihood of widespread opportunistic exploitation. Patched by Apple across all listed OS versions; patching is the correct disposition but this need not jump the queue ahead of pre-auth RCEs. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An adversary who has compromised (or fraudulently operates) an intermediate CA that a target Apple device trusts issues a certificate bearing arbitrary extended key usages - for example marking a TLS server cert as valid for code signing or another restricted purpose. Because affected Apple OSes fail to properly constrain EKUs during validation, the device accepts the certificate for uses the CA hierarchy should have prohibited, enabling impersonation or misuse in TLS/authentication flows. No public exploit code is identified, and success hinges entirely on already controlling a trusted intermediate CA. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 16, 2026
Improper certificate validation in Apple's cross-platform certificate handling lets an attacker who controls a compromised intermediate certificate authority issue certificates with arbitrary extended key usages that unpatched devices will accept as valid, enabling spoofing or trust-bypass against TLS and other PKI-dependent services. Affected are iOS/iPadOS before 26.7 and before 27, macOS before 15.8, before 26.7 and before 27, plus tvOS before 27, watchOS before 27 and visionOS before 27; the vendor scores this CVSS 9.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) with unauthenticated remote attack, while our independent assessment keeps the same vector but raises attack complexity to High because the attack is only reachable after a trusted intermediate CA has already been compromised. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis (EPSS 0.14%, 4th percentile), and vendor patches are available offering the exact fixed versions listed below.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patches: iOS and iPadOS 26.7 or 27, macOS Sequoia 15.8, macOS Tahoe 26.7, macOS Golden Gate 27, tvOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27, as documented in Apple advisories https://support.apple.com/en-us/149034 through https://support.apple.com/en-us/149043. No workaround fully restores correct EKU enforcement, so patching is the only complete fix; until devices are updated, the most effective compensating control is certificate-trust hygiene - audit and remove unnecessary or third-party intermediate CA certificates from the system and user trust stores so fewer intermediates exist that could be abused if compromised, accepting the operational trade-off that legitimate services chaining to a removed intermediate will fail until it is reinstated. Organizations with managed fleets should also monitor Certificate Transparency logs for unexpected issuance under their own domains and enable certificate pinning or CT enforcement in outbound TLS inspection where supported, noting that aggressive pinning can cause availability incidents during legitimate certificate rotation. Because exploitation requires a compromised trusted intermediate CA rather than a remote-only flaw, prioritizing patch deployment to high-value and internet-exposed endpoints, and treating any suspected intermediate-CA compromise as an incident requiring re-issuance of dependent certificates, reduces exposure while the rollout completes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-295, Improper Certificate Validation, in the X.509 path-validation logic Apple ships across its operating systems. When a relying party builds a certificate chain, the Extended Key Usage (EKU) extension constrains what a leaf certificate may be used for (for example TLS server authentication, code signing, or client authentication), and a well-behaved implementation must ensure the EKUs asserted in a leaf are consistent with, and not broader than, those permitted by the issuing chain. Here the validation logic fails to enforce that constraint, so a certificate minted by a compromised or rogue intermediate CA can carry arbitrary extended key usages and still be accepted. The practical consequence is that an intermediate CA compromise - normally a contained, scoped event - is escalated into the ability to forge certificates for purposes the CA was never authorized for. The CPE data confirms the flaw spans Apple's whole product line rather than a single binary: cpe:2.3:a:apple:ios_and_ipados, cpe:2.3:a:apple:macos, cpe:2.3:a:apple:tvos, cpe:2.3:a:apple:visionos and cpe:2.3:a:apple:watchos are all listed as affected, consistent with a shared security framework being fixed in lockstep across seven platform releases. Integrity and confidentiality impact are both rated High with no availability impact, which fits a trust-bypass primitive that yields forged or impersonated identities rather than a denial-of-service condition.

A certificate validation issue was addressed with improved certificate validation. This issue is fixed in iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, macOS Sequoia 15.8, macOS Tahoe 26.7, tvOS 27, visionOS 27, watchOS 27. An attacker with a compromised intermediate certificate authority may be able to issue certificates with arbitrary extended key usages.
Executive ViewAI
Apple's iOS/iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS platforms contain a critical certificate validation flaw that could allow spoofing or trust bypass against TLS and other PKI-dependent services across the organization's Apple fleet. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires a compromised intermediate certificate authority, but unpatched devices remain exposed to trust-bypass attempts. Leadership should care because every unpatched Apple device could accept fraudulent certificates, undermining authentication and data integrity for employees, customers, and partners.
