MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Flowise account (PR:L) with the ability to reach the vulnerable feature over the network and to place a file into the document store; the attacker must craft a fake String object exposing a malicious match function to defeat the path-traversal validation and abuse the moment locale-validation bypass. Limiting factors: exploitation is not fully unauthenticated (a valid low-privileged login is needed), it depends on the vm2-sandboxed code-execution/custom-function functionality being reachable and on write access to the document store, and the AT:P metric reflects the specific crafted-payload requirement - so environments that disable code nodes, forbid document-store writes for untrusted users, or restrict account creation materially reduce realistic exploitability. Affected versions are strictly those before 3.1.3. |
| Impact | This is a genuine priority rather than a paper-high score: the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) with H across all vulnerable- and subsequent-system impact metrics describes network-reachable, low-complexity code execution that only requires a low-privileged authenticated account, and a sandbox escape inherently crosses a trust boundary (subsequent-system impact H). The AT:P attack requirement reflects the need to craft a specific fake-String payload and stage a file in the document store, which modestly raises effort but is fully attacker-controlled and deterministic, not a race. Signals are partly incomplete: there is no CISA KEV entry and no confirmed public PoC, so this is not confirmed active exploitation, but VulnCheck's advisory plus a concrete technical description means weaponization is well within reach for a motivated actor. Given that Flowise is often deployed with weak or shared authentication and sometimes exposed to internal or internet-facing networks, even a mid-sized municipal IT team in sanok running a self-hosted Flowise instance should treat this as urgent and patch promptly rather than relying on the authentication requirement as a safeguard. Net assessment: high real-world risk where any semi-trusted user can obtain an account, lower where Flowise is single-tenant and tightly access-controlled. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user with a low-privileged Flowise account uploads or plants a malicious JavaScript file in the document store, then triggers a workflow that invokes the vulnerable code path with a crafted fake String object whose match function bypasses the path-traversal check. Flowise resolves the path outside the vm2 sandbox and executes the file as the host Node.js process, giving the attacker code execution on the server. No public PoC was identified at time of analysis, but VulnCheck's advisory describes the mechanism in enough detail to reconstruct it. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 13, 2026
Remote code execution in Flowise before 3.1.3 lets authenticated users escape the vm2 JavaScript sandbox and run arbitrary code on the host. By abusing a moment.js locale-validation weakness, an attacker supplies a forged String object whose match function defeats the path-traversal check, causing Flowise to load and execute an attacker-planted JavaScript file from the document store outside the sandbox. Reported by VulnCheck and fixed by the vendor; no public exploit or CISA KEV listing was identified at time of analysis, though the CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.0 reflects full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Flowise to 3.1.3 or later, which is the primary and authoritative fix (see advisory GHSA-rqh4-rxw3-93rp and fix commit 4211bfc8f15746be4019bba557e29a7ba83d54c5). If immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure with concrete compensating controls: restrict who can obtain authenticated accounts and revoke access for untrusted users, since exploitation requires PR:L (trade-off: limits legitimate collaboration); place Flowise behind a VPN or network ACL so the interface and API are not internet-reachable (trade-off: breaks remote/public access patterns); tightly restrict or disable custom-function/code-execution and custom-tool node features and lock down write access to the document store so attackers cannot stage malicious JavaScript (trade-off: disables low-code scripting workflows some flows depend on); and monitor the document store and host process for unexpected file writes or child-process execution. These are stopgaps only - because the underlying vm2 sandbox is deprecated, upgrading to the patched release is the sole durable remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Flowise is an open-source low-code platform for building LLM/agent workflows in Node.js, and it uses vm2 to sandbox user-supplied JavaScript (e.g., custom function/tool nodes). vm2 is a widely known sandbox library with a long history of escape bugs, and it is now deprecated/unmaintained, which makes escapes like this especially impactful. The root cause maps to CWE-95 (improper neutralization of directives in dynamically evaluated code / eval injection): the flaw chains a moment locale-validation bypass with a path-traversal filter that trusts the result of a match call on a supposed String. Because the attacker crafts a fake object exposing a malicious match function, the traversal guard is fooled into resolving a path into the document store, and the loaded file executes with the privileges of the host Node.js process rather than inside the restricted VM context. The single affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:flowiseai:flowise:*, i.e., the Flowise application itself.

DescriptionCVE.org
Flowise before 3.1.3 contains a sandbox escape vulnerability in the vm2 JavaScript sandbox that allows authenticated users to execute arbitrary code by exploiting moment locale validation bypass. Attackers can craft a fake String object with a match function that bypasses path traversal checks to load and execute malicious JavaScript files stored in the document store outside the sandbox.
Executive ViewAI
Flowise, a low-code AI orchestration platform, exposes organizations to critical remote code execution if any authenticated user account is compromised or acts maliciously. While no public exploit identified at time of analysis, successful attacks would allow complete server takeover, risking data theft, service disruption, and lateral movement to connected systems. Immediate patching to version 3.1.3 is mandatory to restore security.
