Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate, independently exploitable vulnerability or malicious dependency in the same JavaScript runtime - this is the AT:P precondition in the CVSS 4.0 vector and is the single most important limiting factor. The data gadget affects all callers of axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), and axios.options() on any axios version below 1.18.0 (1.x) or 0.33.0 (0.x) - no special configuration is required for this specific gadget. The proxy gadget additionally requires direct invocation of axios/lib/adapters/http.js or axios/unsafe/adapters/http.js with a plain config object that has no own proxy property, and does NOT reproduce through normal high-level axios API calls on 1.15.2+. The paramsSerializer gadget requires direct invocation of axios/unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js or browser adapter helpers with a plain config having no own paramsSerializer, and also does not reproduce through normal high-level calls on 1.15.2+. Exploitation is limited to environments where a prototype pollution source exists; pure axios deployments with no other vulnerabilities are not exploitable by this gadget alone.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 with vector AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L reflects a genuinely constrained risk profile. The AT:P (Attack Requirements Present) metric is the critical limiting factor: exploitation of this gadget is impossible without a separately exploitable prototype pollution source already present in the application stack. This transforms a theoretical integrity impact (VI:L) into a chained multi-stage attack. The impact is bounded to integrity - injected request bodies on semantically bodyless HTTP methods, or proxy-route hijacking in low-level adapter usage - with no confidentiality or availability impact scored. EPSS data was not provided; given the chained prerequisite nature, real-world exploitation probability should be treated as lower than the raw CVSS score implies. No CISA KEV listing and no confirmed POC further reduce urgency relative to standalone remote code execution vulnerabilities at similar CVSS scores. However, for applications that already have a prototype pollution vulnerability elsewhere (e.g., from a separate npm dependency), this gadget meaningfully elevates the attacker's capability by enabling request forgery or traffic interception. The fix is available and low-risk to deploy, making patching the clearly preferred path over prolonged risk acceptance.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already exploited a separate prototype pollution vulnerability (e.g., via a malicious JSON payload parsed by a vulnerable dependency) sets Object.prototype.data to an attacker-crafted request body. When the target application subsequently makes an axios.get() call to an internal API, axios reads the inherited data property and sends the attacker's body to the endpoint - a server-side service that naively trusts GET request bodies could be manipulated into processing attacker-controlled content. In environments using the low-level http adapter directly, setting Object.prototype.proxy can additionally route that GET request through an attacker-controlled host, enabling full traffic interception including headers and authentication tokens.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 01, 2026

Read-side prototype pollution gadgets in axios allow a secondary attacker primitive to corrupt HTTP request semantics when Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate, pre-existing vulnerability in the same application. Affected are the bodyless method aliases - axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), and axios.options() - across all 1.x releases below 1.18.0 and all 0.x releases below 0.33.0. An attacker who controls Object.prototype pollution can inject a fabricated request body into what the application intends as a bodyless request, or, via lower-level adapter paths, route requests through an attacker-controlled proxy or invoke custom URL serialization logic. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV listing, but the CVSS 4.0 AT:P metric explicitly models the required precondition attack.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to axios 1.18.0 (for 1.x users) or axios 0.33.0 (for 0.x users). The upstream fixes are tracked in GitHub pull requests https://github.com/axios/axios/pull/11000 and https://github.com/axios/axios/pull/11001. For teams unable to patch immediately, the most actionable compensating control is to audit the full dependency tree for prototype pollution sources (tools such as is-prototype-polluted or manual review of untrusted-input deserialization paths), since this gadget is inert in the absence of an upstream pollution source. A secondary mitigation is to freeze the object prototype via Object.freeze(Object.prototype) at application startup, preventing any code from writing to it - note this may break libraries that legitimately extend Object.prototype and should be tested thoroughly. Restricting direct calls to axios's low-level adapters (lib/adapters/http.js, unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js) in application code eliminates the proxy and paramsSerializer gadgets entirely for teams on 1.15.2+. Technical ContextAI · show details

axios is the dominant HTTP client library in the npm ecosystem, used in both Node.js and browser environments. CWE-1321 (Prototype Pollution) covers cases where JavaScript's prototype inheritance chain is abused; this instance is a 'read-side gadget', meaning axios itself does not introduce the pollution source but consumes polluted prototype properties without first isolating configuration objects from the prototype chain. In lib/core/Axios.js, bodyless method aliases execute (config || {}).data before config normalization - this expression reads the inherited Object.prototype.data property if no own-property data exists, promoting the polluted value into the effective configuration. Separately, direct invocations of lib/adapters/http.js or unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js with plain config objects (no own proxy or paramsSerializer) are vulnerable to proxy-routing and URL-serialization gadgets respectively. The 1.15.2 fix for the latter two gadgets returned a null-prototype config from mergeConfig(), blocking prototype chain traversal for own-property reads on normal high-level calls; however, the data gadget in bodyless aliases persisted until 1.18.0. DescriptionCVE.org

axios is vulnerable to read-side prototype-pollution gadgets that can alter request construction when Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate vulnerability or dependency. In the bodyless method aliases (axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), axios.options()), inherited data is read via (config || {}).data before config normalization, causing an attacker-controlled body to be sent on requests that did not set one. Additional low-level paths, only reachable when calling exported adapters/helpers (e.g. lib/adapters/http.js, unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js) directly with plain configs and no own proxy or paramsSerializer, can inherit polluted proxy values (routing requests through an attacker-controlled proxy) or paramsSerializer values (attacker-controlled URL serialization). These low-level gadgets do not reproduce through normal high-level axios calls on 1.15.2+. The issue is fixed in axios 1.18.0 and 0.33.0.
