DescriptionCVE.org

axios is vulnerable to read-side prototype-pollution gadgets that can alter request construction when Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate vulnerability or dependency. In the bodyless method aliases (axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), axios.options()), inherited data is read via (config || {}).data before config normalization, causing an attacker-controlled body to be sent on requests that did not set one. Additional low-level paths, only reachable when calling exported adapters/helpers (e.g. lib/adapters/http.js, unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js) directly with plain configs and no own proxy or paramsSerializer, can inherit polluted proxy values (routing requests through an attacker-controlled proxy) or paramsSerializer values (attacker-controlled URL serialization). These low-level gadgets do not reproduce through normal high-level axios calls on 1.15.2+. The issue is fixed in axios 1.18.0 and 0.33.0.

AnalysisAI

Read-side prototype pollution gadgets in axios allow a secondary attacker primitive to corrupt HTTP request semantics when Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate, pre-existing vulnerability in the same application. Affected are the bodyless method aliases - axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), and axios.options() - across all 1.x releases below 1.18.0 and all 0.x releases below 0.33.0. …

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Exploit separate prototype pollution source in app
Delivery
Write attacker payload to Object.prototype.data
Exploit
Trigger application's axios.get/delete/head/options call
Execution
Axios reads inherited data before config normalization
Persist
Attacker body injected into bodyless HTTP request
Impact
Receiving service processes attacker-controlled content

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate, independently exploitable vulnerability or malicious dependency in the same JavaScript runtime - this is the AT:P precondition in the CVSS 4.0 vector and is the single most important limiting factor. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 with vector AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L reflects a genuinely constrained risk profile. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who has already exploited a separate prototype pollution vulnerability (e.g., via a malicious JSON payload parsed by a vulnerable dependency) sets Object.prototype.data to an attacker-crafted request body. When the target application subsequently makes an axios.get() call to an internal API, axios reads the inherited data property and sends the attacker's body to the endpoint - a server-side service that naively trusts GET request bodies could be manipulated into processing attacker-controlled content. …
Remediation Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to axios 1.18.0 (for 1.x users) or axios 0.33.0 (for 0.x users). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
