axios is vulnerable to read-side prototype-pollution gadgets that can alter request construction when Object.prototype has already been polluted by a separate vulnerability or dependency. In the bodyless method aliases (axios.get(), axios.delete(), axios.head(), axios.options()), inherited data is read via (config || {}).data before config normalization, causing an attacker-controlled body to be sent on requests that did not set one. Additional low-level paths, only reachable when calling exported adapters/helpers (e.g. lib/adapters/http.js, unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js) directly with plain configs and no own proxy or paramsSerializer, can inherit polluted proxy values (routing requests through an attacker-controlled proxy) or paramsSerializer values (attacker-controlled URL serialization). These low-level gadgets do not reproduce through normal high-level axios calls on 1.15.2+. The issue is fixed in axios 1.18.0 and 0.33.0.

CWE-1321 (Prototype Pollution) covers cases where JavaScript's prototype inheritance chain is abused; this instance is a 'read-side gadget', meaning axios itself does not introduce the pollution source but consumes polluted prototype properties without first isolating configuration objects from the prototype chain. In lib/core/Axios.js, bodyless method aliases execute (config || {}).data before config normalization - this expression reads the inherited Object.prototype.data property if no own-property data exists, promoting the polluted value into the effective configuration. Separately, direct invocations of lib/adapters/http.js or unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js with plain config objects (no own proxy or paramsSerializer) are vulnerable to proxy-routing and URL-serialization gadgets respectively. The 1.15.2 fix for the latter two gadgets returned a null-prototype config from mergeConfig(), blocking prototype chain traversal for own-property reads on normal high-level calls; however, the data gadget in bodyless aliases persisted until 1.18.0. Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to axios 1.18.0 (for 1.x users) or axios 0.33.0 (for 0.x users). For teams unable to patch immediately, the most actionable compensating control is to audit the full dependency tree for prototype pollution sources (tools such as is-prototype-polluted or manual review of untrusted-input deserialization paths), since this gadget is inert in the absence of an upstream pollution source. A secondary mitigation is to freeze the object prototype via Object.freeze(Object.prototype) at application startup, preventing any code from writing to it - note this may break libraries that legitimately extend Object.prototype and should be tested thoroughly. Restricting direct calls to axios's low-level adapters (lib/adapters/http.js, unsafe/helpers/resolveConfig.js) in application code eliminates the proxy and paramsSerializer gadgets entirely for teams on 1.15.2+.
