DescriptionCVE.org

axios versions >=1.13.0 (Node.js HTTP adapter) fail to enforce the configured maxBodyLength limit on streamed request bodies when requests are sent with httpVersion: 2. Because Node's HTTP/2 request API does not honor the maxBodyLength option and axios's byte-counting stream wrapper is gated on maxRedirects === 0, an attacker who controls a stream passed to axios can cause the application to transmit outbound data exceeding the configured finite maxBodyLength. Impact is limited to resource consumption and policy bypass (excess egress, upstream quota consumption, limited availability); it does not enable code execution, credential disclosure, or request-destination control. Calls using the default maxBodyLength: -1 and browser adapters are not affected.

AnalysisAI

HTTP/2 streamed upload requests in axios 1.13.0-1.17.x bypass the configured maxBodyLength limit, allowing applications that proxy attacker-controlled streams to an upstream HTTP/2 service to transmit outbound data of arbitrary size. The flaw is constrained to upload-forwarding architectures that explicitly configure a finite maxBodyLength, use the Node.js HTTP adapter with httpVersion: 2, and accept streamed request bodies - conditions common in reverse-proxy and file-upload relay patterns. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Attacker sends oversized upload to proxy endpoint
Delivery
Application forwards data as stream via axios with httpVersion: 2
Exploit
HTTP/2 adapter skips byte-counting wrapper due to maxRedirects gate
Execution
Full stream piped unchecked to upstream service
Impact
Upstream bandwidth, storage, or API quota exhausted

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires all five conditions to be simultaneously true: (1) the axios call uses the Node.js HTTP adapter, not a browser (XHR/fetch) adapter; (2) the request is configured with the explicit option httpVersion: 2; (3) the request body is supplied as a Node.js Readable stream - String, Buffer, and ArrayBuffer bodies are pre-checked before transport selection and are not exploitable; (4) a finite positive numeric value is set for maxBodyLength - applications using the default maxBodyLength: -1 (unlimited) do not cross any configured boundary and are explicitly unaffected; and (5) the attacker controls or meaningfully influences the content length or volume of the stream passed to axios, typically by being the source of an upload forwarded by a proxy. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:L) accurately captures the key characteristics: no confidentiality or integrity impact, limited availability impact only, and attack requirements present (AT:P) reflecting the specific configuration prerequisites required. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker uploads an arbitrarily large file to a web application that proxies user uploads to an upstream storage or processing API over HTTP/2 using axios, with a finite maxBodyLength set to enforce a per-upload size cap. Because the HTTP/2 adapter bypasses the byte-counting wrapper, the full stream is forwarded to the upstream service regardless of size, consuming bandwidth, storage quota, or API rate limits far beyond the operator's intended policy. …
Remediation Upgrade axios to version 1.18.0, which contains the upstream fix via commit 32fc489632377d214db55bfa4e2c48486a7d7ce2 (PR #11000 at https://github.com/axios/axios/pull/11000). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
