Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following to be simultaneously true: (1) The target Unbound instance must be configured with an auth-zone or rpz block that specifies a primary server using a hostname rather than a literal IP address. (2) That hostname's A/AAAA resolution must result in a BOGUS DNSSEC status - either because the zone is insecure and unsigned or because an existing DNSSEC chain-of-trust failure is present. (3) The attacker must be able to control what IP address the resolver receives for that hostname, requiring either an on-path network position or successful upstream DNS cache poisoning - no valid RRSIG is required for the spoofed record. No authentication to the Unbound instance itself is needed (PR:N per CVSS). Deployments using static IP addresses for primary server configuration are not affected. Resolvers not using auth-zone or rpz functionality are not affected.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L accurately captures the attack profile. AC:H reflects the genuine difficulty of spoofing a DNS hostname - the attacker must control or intercept resolution for the primary hostname, typically requiring an on-path position or successful DNS cache poisoning of an upstream resolver. I:H is well-justified because a successful attack replaces the entire RPZ zone, negating an organization's entire DNS-layer threat blocking policy. A:L accounts for potential zone inconsistency disrupting resolution. EPSS data was not provided in the supplied intelligence; however, the non-trivial AC:H requirement and the specificity of the vulnerable configuration (RPZ with hostname-based primaries) suggest lower opportunistic exploitation probability than the 6.5 CVSS base score alone might imply. This is not in the CISA KEV, and no POC has been identified at time of analysis, further deprioritizing it for mass exploitation scenarios. That said, the integrity impact for organizations actively relying on RPZ for DNS firewall enforcement - blocking malware C2 or phishing domains - is severe: an attacker who successfully executes this attack can silently nullify all those controls.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker targeting an organization that uses Unbound with RPZ-based DNS blocking positions themselves to intercept or poison resolution of the hostname configured as the RPZ primary (e.g., via BGP hijack, rogue resolver injection, or spoofing at the network level). They return a crafted A/AAAA record without a valid RRSIG, causing DNSSEC validation to mark it BOGUS - but Unbound still contacts the attacker-controlled IP for zone transfers. The attacker's rogue nameserver responds with a malicious RPZ zone that either removes all blocking rules or actively redirects victim queries to attacker-controlled infrastructure, silently bypassing the organization's DNS firewall.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 22, 2026

DNS response policy poisoning in NLnet Labs Unbound 1.7.0 through 1.25.1 allows an unauthenticated network attacker to become the authoritative XFR source for an auth/rpz zone by spoofing the configured primary hostname's A/AAAA record. The flaw stems from Unbound accepting a BOGUS-validated hostname resolution - one where DNSSEC validation has explicitly failed - as a valid zone transfer endpoint without requiring a valid RRSIG, violating the integrity guarantees DNSSEC is designed to enforce. Successful exploitation enables complete replacement of the resolver's response policy zone, making this a DNS firewall bypass with high real-world consequence for organizations relying on RPZ for threat blocking. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Unbound to the version specified in the NLnet Labs advisory at https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/unbound/CVE-2026-50248.txt - the exact patched release version was not confirmed in the provided intelligence data, and should be verified directly against that advisory before deployment. As an immediate workaround with no patch dependency, replace any hostname-based primary entries in auth/rpz zone stubs with static IP addresses, eliminating the resolution step that the vulnerability exploits; this removes the attack surface entirely but requires manual tracking of primary server IP changes. A secondary compensating control is to ensure the primary hostname's zone is signed and DNSSEC-validating correctly so BOGUS resolution does not occur in the first place - this reduces attack surface but does not eliminate the underlying flaw. Operators should audit their unbound.conf for any 'primary:' or 'master:' directives using hostnames under auth-zone or rpz blocks.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Unbound is a validating, recursive DNS resolver developed by NLnet Labs, widely deployed in ISP, enterprise, and security-focused environments. This vulnerability specifically targets its Response Policy Zone (RPZ) implementation, a DNS firewall mechanism that lets operators redirect or block queries by loading policy data via AXFR/IXFR zone transfers from a configured primary server. The affected code path (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:nlnet_labs:unbound:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) covers versions 1.7.0-1.25.1. CWE-345 (Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity) precisely describes the root cause: when the primary hostname resolves to a BOGUS A/AAAA - meaning DNSSEC validation explicitly rejected the record due to signature failure or chain-of-trust break - Unbound should discard that address entirely. Instead, it treats the BOGUS-resolved IP as a viable XFR candidate, bypassing the DNSSEC trust model and accepting spoofed, unsigned addresses as authoritative zone transfer sources.

DescriptionCVE.org

In NLnet Labs Unbound 1.7.0 up to and including 1.25.1, when an auth/rpz zone has a configured primary hostname that resolves to BOGUS A/AAAA, it is still considered as a possible XFR endpoint. A malicious actor that can spoof the hostname's A/AAAA record (no valid RRSIG required) becomes the zone's XFR primary and can replaces the entire zone/the resolver's entire response policy.
