Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must be positioned on the same adjacent network segment as the victim device (AV:A) - such as a shared Wi-Fi access point, VLAN, or local subnet - and cannot exploit this vulnerability over the internet. The victim must be running Prisma Access Agent version below 26.2.1 on Android or Chrome OS specifically; the flaw does not exist on macOS, Windows, Linux, or iOS agent builds. No authentication is required of the attacker (PR:N), and no user interaction is required (UI:N) beyond the victim initiating a normal VPN connection. The attacker must be able to obtain or generate a certificate for any domain signed by a Certificate Authority trusted by the victim device's OS trust store; this is the primary limiting factor, as it requires either access to a legitimate CA's issuance infrastructure, a device with an enterprise-managed rogue root CA installed, or a compromised subordinate CA.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 score of 6.2 reflects a constrained but meaningful attack surface. The attack vector is Adjacent (AV:A), meaning exploitation requires the attacker to share a network segment with the victim - such as a shared Wi-Fi network, a hotel LAN, or a compromised corporate switch - and cannot be executed remotely over the internet. Complexity is low (AC:L), no privileges are required (PR:N), and no user interaction is needed (UI:N), which lowers the bar considerably once adjacency is achieved. Confidentiality and integrity impacts on the vulnerable system are both High (VC:H, VI:H), reflecting the ability to read and potentially manipulate VPN-tunneled traffic. EPSS at 0.00% (0th percentile) and SSVC Exploitation status of 'none' confirm no observed exploitation activity, making this low urgency operationally. However, a notable conflict exists: the CVSS 4.0 supplemental metric AU:Y (Automatable: Yes) disagrees with SSVC's Automatable: No determination - this discrepancy likely stems from the adjacency requirement making at-scale automated targeting impractical despite low per-target complexity. SSVC's 'no' is the more operationally relevant signal here. SSVC Technical Impact of 'total' is consistent with the ability to silently intercept VPN sessions. The overall picture: low urgency given no active exploitation and adjacency requirement, but the attack is realistic and impactful in targeted scenarios such as corporate espionage or surveillance in shared network environments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker positioned on the same Wi-Fi network as a corporate employee using Prisma Access Agent on an Android device - for example, at an airport or hotel - intercepts the VPN session establishment. The attacker presents a TLS certificate for any domain, issued by a certificate authority already trusted by the Android device (obtainable legitimately or via a rogue CA on an enterprise-managed device). Because the agent does not enforce hostname-specific validation, the certificate is accepted, and the attacker establishes themselves as a transparent proxy, capturing VPN tunnel contents including authentication tokens, session data, and sensitive corporate communications.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jun 08, 2026

Improper certificate validation in Palo Alto Networks Prisma Access Agent versions below 26.2.1 on Android and Chrome OS exposes VPN sessions to man-in-the-middle interception by adjacent-network attackers. An attacker co-located on the same network segment can present any certificate for any domain issued by a trusted Certificate Authority - bypassing domain-specific validation - to intercept VPN tunnel traffic and capture sensitive device information. No public exploit code exists and no active exploitation has been confirmed (EPSS 0.00%, not in CISA KEV); however, a vendor patch is available at version 26.2.1 and should be prioritized for mobile and Chrome OS deployments.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade Prisma Access Agent to version 26.2.1 or later on all Android and Chrome OS endpoints; this is the vendor-released patch confirmed by EUVD data (EUVD-2026-30099) and the Palo Alto Networks advisory at https://security.paloaltonetworks.com/CVE-2026-0248. Until patching is complete, organizations should enforce a network policy requiring Prisma Access Agent users on Android and Chrome OS to connect only from trusted, controlled network segments (e.g., corporate wired networks or managed Wi-Fi with 802.1X authentication), thereby eliminating the adjacent-network attack surface. Disabling split-tunneling configurations that could route sensitive traffic outside the VPN when on untrusted networks is an additional compensating control, though it does not address the certificate validation flaw itself. Monitoring for unexpected certificate issuances via Certificate Transparency logs for VPN gateway domains may help detect active MitM attempts during the remediation window.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-295 (Improper Certificate Validation): the Prisma Access Agent VPN client on Android and Chrome OS fails to enforce that the TLS certificate presented by a peer corresponds to the expected VPN gateway endpoint. Because it accepts any certificate signed by a system-trusted Certificate Authority - regardless of the Subject/SAN domain - an attacker who can position themselves at the network layer can substitute a fraudulent certificate without triggering a validation failure. This class of flaw typically arises from missing hostname verification or improper trust anchor pinning in the VPN tunnel establishment logic. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:palo_alto_networks:prisma_access_agent:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering all versions prior to 26.2.1. The vulnerability is scoped to the Android and Chrome OS implementations of the agent; Palo Alto Networks explicitly confirms that macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS agents are not affected, suggesting a platform-specific certificate validation code path is responsible.

DescriptionCVE.org

An improper certificate validation vulnerability in the Prisma Access Agent® for Android and Chrome OS enables an attacker to perform a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack to intercept VPN traffic. By presenting a certificate for any domain issued by a trusted Certificate Authority, the attacker can capture sensitive device information.

The Prisma Access Agent on macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS are not affected.
