Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that --b2-download-url be configured to a custom download host (a documented, vendor-recommended setup, e.g. pointing at a Cloudflare CDN) - it does NOT affect default Backblaze-download-host configurations. Vector 1 (Authorization token leak) additionally requires that custom host to issue a same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade redirect and an adjacent-network/on-path observer to capture the cleartext token. Vector 2 (SSE-C key leak) requires SSE-C to be configured and the download host to issue a cross-host redirect, which forwards the X-Bz-Server-Side-Encryption-Customer-* headers to the new host. The key limiting factors are: the redirect-downgrade/cross-host behavior is attacker-uncontrolled (it depends on the CDN/proxy misconfiguring redirects, reflected as AT:P), the attacker must hold an adjacent/on-path position (AV:A) for vector 1, and the vulnerable code path is only reached when the non-default --b2-download-url option is in use.

Impact

This is a moderate, conditional risk rather than a drop-everything emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H) scores 6.0 and tells a consistent story: no authentication is needed (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N), but exploitation is gated to an adjacent/on-path network position (AV:A), is high-complexity (AC:H), and depends on an attacker-uncontrolled precondition (AT:P) - namely that the configured download host actually issues an HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade or cross-host redirect. The confidentiality impact is high and real (a live, full-capability B2 bearer token valid up to 24h, or SSE-C customer encryption keys), with no integrity or availability impact. No EPSS probability or CISA KEV status is present in the input, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the GHSA advisory contains a conceptual proof-of-concept walkthrough but no confirmed working exploit code. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), which aligns with the adjacent-vector, high-complexity, config-dependent profile. The one notable limiting factor is that the whole chain only fires when --b2-download-url is set (a documented, vendor-recommended CDN optimization) AND that fronting host misbehaves on redirects AND an attacker is positioned to observe the hop - so this is a genuine but narrow priority, not a high-CVSS-but-illusory issue.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An operator follows rclone's own documentation and sets --b2-download-url to a Cloudflare-fronted CDN for cheaper egress, then runs routine 'rclone copy' commands against their B2 bucket. If that CDN or proxy answers a download request with a same-host https-to-http downgrade redirect (a misconfiguration, a Worker rule, or an omitted scheme), Go's default client replays the live B2 Authorization token in cleartext, and an adjacent-network observer on that hop captures a full-capability account/application-key credential. The GHSA advisory documents a step-by-step conceptual PoC for this token-leak vector, but no verified working exploit code is indicated in the input.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026

Rclone's Backblaze B2 backend sends the live account Authorization token and any configured SSE-C encryption key headers to a custom download host when --b2-download-url is set, and it follows redirects with Go's default policy that inspects host but not scheme. A same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade from that download host replays the full-capability B2 bearer token in cleartext to an on-path observer, while a cross-host redirect forwards the X-Bz-Server-Side-Encryption-Customer-* headers - and therefore the customer key - to an unrelated host. Only deployments using the non-default custom download host are reachable, and the redirect behaviour is controlled by the CDN/proxy rather than the attacker; the vendor fixed the issue in v1.75.2 and a proof-of-concept procedure is described in the public advisory, though it is not verified as working exploit code and no active exploitation is reported.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to rclone v1.75.2, the fixed version listed in the published package metadata and the CVE description (note the advisory's remediation prose references a v1.75.1 update; deploy the newest release at or above v1.75.2 and validate against the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-gpw7-77cq-9f72). The fix wires the download-path client to refuse HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade redirects and strips the SSE-C X-Bz-Server-Side-Encryption-Customer-* headers on cross-host redirects, with scheme validation of --b2-download-url added as defence in depth. If upgrading immediately is not possible, unset --b2-download-url so reads go to Backblaze's own HTTPS download host - the trade-off is losing the CDN egress savings that motivated the setting; or, if the custom host must stay, force an explicit https:// scheme on the option and ensure the fronting CDN/proxy never issues a plaintext redirect (no http:// redirect rules, enable 'Always Use HTTPS'). Replacing the configured account master key with a scoped, least-privilege application key limits what a captured token can do for its remaining lifetime but does not prevent the disclosure itself. Because exploiting vector 1 requires an on-path observer positioned to capture a redirect the CDN must misconfigure, this is a moderate, conditional risk suited to the vendor's normal maintenance cycle rather than emergency change control.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Rclone's b2 backend installs the account/application-key session token as a permanent Authorization header on its shared REST client at login, and every file read flows through Object.getOrHead, which overrides the request root URL to the user-supplied --b2-download-url host and attaches the SSE-C header set (algorithm, base64 key, key MD5) as extra headers. getOrHead sets no NoRedirect, CheckRedirect or AuthRedirect option, so lib/rest falls back to fshttp.NewClient, which has no redirect policy and inherits Go net/http defaults: sensitive headers such as Authorization are kept on a redirect whose target is the same host or a subdomain of the original, with the decision made on host only and never on scheme, and custom header names such as X-Bz-Server-Side-Encryption-Customer-* are not in Go's sensitive list and are forwarded to any redirect target. The root cause is classified as CWE-319 (cleartext transmission of sensitive information): a downgrade hop puts the bearer token on plain HTTP, and a cross-host hop discloses the client-supplied encryption key, defeating the purpose of SSE-C. This is the same redirect-hardening gap rclone already closed for the S3 and WebDAV backends via rest.RefuseHTTPSDowngradeRedirectFn, and because redirect hardening is opt-in per backend, b2 re-introduced it. Affected scope is limited to object reads against a configured custom download host; the separate scoped, short-lived download-authorization token generated by PublicLink()/rclone link uses a URL query parameter on a different code path and is not involved.

DescriptionCVE.org

Rclone before v1.75.2 contains a credential exposure vulnerability in the b2 backend that leaks the live account Authorization token and SSE-C keys on HTTP redirects from --b2-download-url hosts. Attackers can observe a same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade redirect to capture the cleartext B2 token, or receive cross-host redirects disclosing SSE-C customer encryption keys.
