| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a Camel route that unmarshals an externally-supplied multipart MIME message using the camel-mail MimeMultipart data format with inline headers (headersInline), where the resulting Exchange is subsequently passed to a mail producer. The attacker must be able to deliver a MIME message whose headers include mail.smtp.* or mail.smtps.* names (e.g., mail.smtp.host, mail.smtps.auth); these sit outside the Camel* namespace that consumer filters block, so pre-fix they were copied onto the Exchange and influenced how the downstream producer connects and sends. Limiting factors: the vulnerable data-format-then-producer topology is a specific, non-default configuration; deployments without the MimeMultipart unmarshal path or without a downstream mail producer are not exposed. The documented mitigation (removeHeaders("mail.smtp*") before the producer) also neutralizes it without upgrading. |
| Impact | The vendor CVSS of 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) presents this as a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity issue with low confidentiality and integrity impact and no availability impact - the PR:N reflects that a crafted message from an external sender triggers it without authentication. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no proof-of-concept or exploit code is referenced, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Crucially, the raw AV:N/AC:L/PR:N vector overstates practical risk: the flaw is only reachable in deployments that unmarshal externally-supplied multipart MIME with the MimeMultipart data format (headersInline) AND then feed a downstream mail producer - a specific, non-default route topology, not an out-of-the-box exposure. This is an incomplete-fix follow-up to CVE-2026-46584, so the real priority is moderate and conditional: organizations that patched the prior CVE and run the affected route pattern should treat it as a genuine gap, but it is not a broad, wormable, high-urgency issue. Conflicting signal to note: the vector implies default remote exploitability, whereas the description makes clear a particular data-format-plus-producer configuration is required - verify your routes before deprioritizing or over-prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An external sender submits a crafted multipart MIME message to a Camel route that unmarshals it with the MimeMultipart data format and subsequently calls a mail producer. Because the unmarshal path copied mail.smtp.* / mail.smtps.* headers onto the Exchange without filtering, the attacker injects headers such as mail.smtp.host that override the producer's SMTP session properties, redirecting outbound mail to an attacker-controlled server and potentially leaking credentials or message content. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the attack requires only crafting message headers (AV:N/AC:L), but depends on the vulnerable route configuration. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Unfiltered MIME headers in Apache Camel's camel-mail component (4.0.0 through 4.18.4 and 4.19.0 through 4.22.0) allow an external message sender to place mail.smtp.* / mail.smtps.* names onto the Camel Exchange when a multipart message is unmarshalled with the MimeMultipart data format and inline headers enabled. Because those names fall outside the Camel* namespace that consumer-side header filters block, they can steer how a downstream mail producer connects and sends, yielding low confidentiality and integrity impact (CVSS 6.5, network-reachable and unauthenticated per the CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N vector). This is an incomplete fix of CVE-2026-46584 rather than a new defect class, so deployments that applied that earlier advisory and considered camel-mail settled remain exposed on this path; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the vulnerable topology is a specific, non-default route configuration.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, or to the LTS stream fixes 4.18.5 (4.18.x) or 4.22.1 (4.22.x), where MimeMultipartDataFormat applies MailHeaderFilterStrategy on unmarshal and closes the path CVE-2026-46584 left open. Fixes correspond to upstream PRs https://github.com/apache/camel/pull/25568 (with #25765 and #25766) and are documented in the 4.23 upgrade guide plus the advisory at https://camel.apache.org/security/CVE-2026-85314.html. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, strip the namespace in the route after the data format with removeHeaders("mail.smtp*") before any mail producer (the vendor-documented workaround) - the trade-off is that legitimate routes relying on mail.smtp.* or mail.smtps.* values arriving via unmarshalled MIME messages must set those values explicitly instead, and any producer that genuinely depends on header-driven JavaMail properties will need them configured on the endpoint rather than the Exchange. Additionally, restrict or disable the headersInline unmarshal option on routes that accept untrusted MIME input, accepting the functional loss of inline header propagation, and ensure the earlier CVE-2026-46584 consumer-side patch is in place, since this issue is only the residual path of that fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache Camel's camel-mail component ships MimeMultipartDataFormat, a Camel DataFormat that marshals and unmarshals MIME multipart bodies; with the headersInline option the unmarshal path copies leftover MIME headers onto the Camel message. The root cause is CWE-20 improper input validation: MimeMultipartDataFormat instantiated a plain DefaultHeaderFilterStrategy, which only blocks the Camel*/camel* namespace, instead of the component's MailHeaderFilterStrategy that also blocks mail.smtp.* and mail.smtps.* on the inbound path (added under CAMEL-23522 and effective in the mail consumer since 4.14.9/4.18.4/4.22.0). Those prefixes map directly onto JavaMail session properties such as mail.smtp.host, mail.smtp.port and mail.smtps.auth, so an injected header becomes runtime configuration for any mail producer the Exchange later reaches. CVE-2026-46584 closed the consumer-side path where mail headers reached the Exchange unfiltered but left this data-format path open; the upstream fix (PR #25568, with follow-ups #25765/#25766 and tracking issue CAMEL-24419) swaps in MailHeaderFilterStrategy and adds a regression test asserting that mail.smtp.host, mail.smtps.auth and MAIL.SMTP.PORT are dropped while ordinary headers such as X-Normal survive. CPE data lists the affected package as apache_software_foundation:apache_camel with a wildcard version, matching the stated 4.0.0-to-4.18.5 and 4.19.0-to-4.22.1 ranges.

DescriptionCVE.org
Improper Input Validation vulnerability in Apache Camel Mail component.
This issue affects Apache Camel: from 4.0.0 before 4.18.5, from 4.19.0 before 4.22.1.
CVE-2026-46584 addressed mail headers reaching the Exchange without passing through a header filter, but the MimeMultipart data format retained an unfiltered path: unmarshalling a multipart message mapped mail.smtp headers onto the Exchange with no filter applied. Those names sit outside the Camel namespace that consumer filters block, so a message crafted by an external sender could still set them, and the mail.smtp namespace influences how a downstream mail producer connects and sends. This is an incomplete fix of CVE-2026-46584 rather than a new class of defect: a deployment that applied that advisory and considered camel-mail settled remained exposed on this path.
Upgrade to Apache Camel 4.23.0, which fixes the issue. Users on the 4.18.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.18.5. Users on the 4.22.x LTS releases stream should upgrade to 4.22.1. The MimeMultipart data format now applies the header filter on unmarshal, closing the path CVE-2026-46584 left open. For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately, strip the namespace after the data format with removeHeaders("mail.smtp*") before any mail producer.
