The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the affected process to be running OpenSSL 4.0.0-4.0.2 and to access the X.509 extension cache of a certificate concurrently from multiple threads - the bug is a use-after-free that only manifests 'under concurrent use' of the same certificate object. The attacker must be able to supply or influence a certificate that is parsed (e.g. via TLS handshake, certificate-chain validation, or CMP/CRL processing) while such concurrent access occurs. Limiting factors: exploitation depends on a timing-sensitive thread race (not a deterministic single-shot input), so single-threaded or non-shared certificate handling is not affected; the maximum realistic impact is a crash/denial of service (no confidentiality or integrity impact per C:N/I:N).

Impact

This is a genuine but availability-bounded issue. The official CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) rates only availability impact - a use-after-free in the X.509 extension cache under concurrent access, i.e. a memory-safety crash/DoS, NOT information disclosure or code execution despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag (which contradicts C:N and is misleading). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the input, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are consistent with a low-immediacy but broadly-relevant bug: OpenSSL is ubiquitous, so the affected footprint is enormous, but the trigger is a concurrency race ('under concurrent use') that requires the target application to parse attacker-supplied certificates while sharing/reusing the same X.509 object across threads. The vendor's AC:L is questionable for a race condition - reliably winning a use-after-free window across threads is closer to AC:H, which lowers realistic exploitability. Reachability also depends on the application: only software that concurrently accesses cached extensions on a shared certificate is exposed. Net: a real, patch-now hygiene item because of OpenSSL's prevalence, but not an emergency in the absence of exploitation evidence, and its worst credible outcome is a crash/DoS rather than compromise.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker supplies a crafted X.509 certificate (e.g. as a TLS client/server certificate or in a chain) to a server that concurrently parses and accesses the certificate's cached extensions across multiple threads. By racing concurrent access to the freed extension-cache structure, the attacker triggers a use-after-free that crashes the process, causing denial of service. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and successful triggering depends on winning a timing-sensitive race.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Use-after-free in OpenSSL 4.0.0 through 4.0.2's X.509 extension cache allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash multithreaded services that parse or validate attacker-influenced certificates, producing denial of service. Exploitation is not a deterministic single-shot input: it requires winning a timing-sensitive thread race while the same certificate object's extension cache is accessed concurrently, so single-threaded or non-shared certificate handling is unaffected. NVD lists the issue at CVSS 7.5, while our assessment applies AC:H and confirms availability-only impact (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H); no public exploit code or KEV-listed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to OpenSSL 4.0.3 (or a later 4.0.x release), then rebuild and relink any statically linked applications or replace the shared libcrypto/libssl on the host; the fix is the upstream commit de97a1a54f43edefd43b5084ecac54ecadb33081 and is documented at https://openssl-library.org/news/secadv/20260929.txt with release notes at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/releases/tag/openssl-4.0.3. Until patched, the practical compensating control is to eliminate the concurrency condition rather than rely on input filtering, since the trigger is a thread race on a shared certificate object: serialize all X.509 extension lookups on a given X509 object behind a mutex or equivalent lock, avoid sharing parsed certificate objects between worker threads (parse per-thread copies instead), or process certificate validation single-threaded - the trade-off is reduced throughput on high-concurrency TLS/QUIC endpoints. Preventing untrusted certificates from being parsed (for example, disabling optional client-certificate requests or restricting CMP/CRL fetches to trusted sources) reduces the attacker's ability to influence the certificate but does not remove the race, which can also be hit by any locally parsed shared certificate; reverting to an unaffected branch such as a 3.x LTS release is outside the stated affected range but forgoes OpenSSL 4.0 functionality and requires its own validation. No vendor patch beyond 4.0.3 is required, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so prioritization should be driven by whether the deployment runs multithreaded certificate handling on the 4.0 branch.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in OpenSSL's internal X.509 extension cache, the structure that memoizes decoded X.509v3 extensions (such as subjectAltName, key usage, basic constraints, and CRL distribution point data) so they are not re-parsed on every lookup. In OpenSSL 4.0.0-4.0.2, concurrent access to the cached extension data for the same certificate can free or reallocate the cached object while another thread is still reading it, yielding a dangling pointer dereference. The affected code is exercised by any operation that decodes certificate extensions: TLS/DTLS handshakes that parse peer certificates, certificate-chain validation, CMP transaction processing, and CRL/CRLDP evaluation. The condition is only reachable when a shared certificate object is accessed from multiple threads simultaneously - for example, applications that call X509_get_ext_d2i() or similar extension lookups for one X509 object from more than one thread without external serialization. The vendor fix is commit de97a1a54f43edefd43b5084ecac54ecadb33081, incorporated in the OpenSSL 4.0.3 security release, which also addresses numerous unrelated QUIC/DTLS denial-of-service, memory-corruption, and constant-time issues. CPE strings were not supplied in the intelligence feed; affected coverage is defined by the EUVD range OpenSSL 4.0.0 < 4.0.3.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-safety flaw in OpenSSL versions 4.0.0 through 4.0.2 can be triggered by remote, unauthenticated attackers to crash multithreaded services that parse or validate certificates, resulting in denial of service rather than data disclosure or code execution. Any internet-facing or internally shared service that terminates TLS or performs X.509 validation - load balancers, API gateways, mail and VPN endpoints - could be disrupted, so leadership should care about availability of certificate-handling infrastructure. Exploitation requires winning a timing-sensitive thread race and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, which lowers the near-term likelihood but not the need to remediate a HIGH-severity flaw with a vendor patch available.

Attack Technique

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
