MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to already run code inside an app on the target Apple device (local, low-privilege sandboxed app context, PR:L) - there is no remote or unauthenticated vector. No user interaction beyond running the malicious app is needed (UI:N). Exploitation is limited by Apple's app-distribution controls (App Store review / notarization / sideloading restrictions) that gate getting a malicious app onto the device, and by the fact that the outcome is a bounded confidentiality leak (C:L) with no code execution or privilege gain by itself. Applies to iOS/iPadOS before 26.7 and before 27, macOS Tahoe before 26.7 and Golden Gate before 27, and tvOS/visionOS/watchOS before 27; devices already updated to the fixed builds are not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely LOW-priority issue despite being a kernel-memory disclosure, and all signals agree. The CVSS 3.1 base score is only 3.3 with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N - local attack vector, requiring a low-privilege app already running on the device, yielding only limited confidentiality impact (C:L) and no integrity or availability effect. EPSS reinforces this: 0.20% probability (10th percentile), placing it well below any exploitation-likelihood threshold. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent - there is no CVSS-says-network-but-description-says-local conflict here; the description ('An app may be able to disclose kernel memory') aligns cleanly with the AV:L/PR:L vector. The only realistic value of this bug to an attacker is as an information-leak primitive (e.g., defeating KASLR) chained with a separate exploit; standalone it is not a priority. Patch is available from Apple across all affected OSes. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user installs a malicious or compromised app from an untrusted source (or an attacker who already has code execution in a low-privilege app context). The app invokes the vulnerable kernel path to read residual/uninitialized kernel memory, harvesting fragments such as pointers or secrets that could weaken kernel address-space layout randomization. No public exploit code exists, and the leak alone grants no elevated control - its practical use is as a stepping stone in a larger exploit chain. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 17, 2026
Kernel memory disclosure on unpatched Apple devices allows a locally running, low-privilege app to read kernel memory that it should not be able to access, potentially exposing sensitive kernel-side data. The issue - an information-disclosure weakness (CWE-200) caused by improper memory management - affects iOS and iPadOS before 26.7 and before 27, macOS Tahoe before 26.7 and macOS Golden Gate before 27, and tvOS, visionOS and watchOS before 27, and is fixed in the corresponding 26.7/27 releases. Exploitation requires the attacker to already be executing code inside a sandboxed app on the target device (CVSS 3.1 3.3, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N, confidentiality-only impact), so overall risk is low; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, with an EPSS score of roughly 0.2% (10th percentile) and no CISA KEV listing.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: apply the fixed builds - iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7 or iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, macOS Tahoe 26.7 or macOS Golden Gate 27, and tvOS 27, visionOS 27 and watchOS 27 - as documented in Apple's advisories at https://support.apple.com/en-us/149034, /149035, /149036, /149037, /149038, /149041 and /149042. Because the exposure requires a malicious app already running locally, the most effective compensating controls until updates can be deployed are the app-distribution gates Apple already enforces: keep App Store review, notarization and sideloading/MDM installation restrictions in place (trade-off: this blocks legitimate enterprise-sideloaded or developer-signed apps and may not stop already-trusted unsigned or enterprise-signed binaries), and use MDM to enforce a minimum OS version and to remove or block enterprise-signed apps from untrusted sources (trade-off: forced upgrades can interrupt users on managed fleets and older hardware that cannot reach the 26.7/27 builds). If a device cannot be updated, restrict it to a tightly curated app set, disable developer mode and untrusted enterprise trust profiles, and treat any such device as potentially leaking kernel memory to any app it runs; there is no setting that disables the underlying kernel code path, so patching remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw sits in the memory-handling layer of Apple's XNU kernel shared across the iOS/iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS product families, and is classified as CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor). Apple's advisory language - "addressed with improved memory management" - indicates the kernel was returning or copying out memory contents that had not been correctly initialized, bounded, or cleared (typically an over-read of a kernel buffer or a stale/uninitialized region exposed to user space). The affected CPE set (apple:ios_and_ipados, apple:macos, apple:tvos, apple:visionos, apple:watchos) confirms this is a cross-platform kernel component rather than a single app or service. Because the CVSS vector is AV:L/PR:L/UI:N with C:L and no I/A impact, the primitive is a bounded kernel-memory read reachable only from an already-installed, already-running low-privilege app context; there is no remote, unauthenticated, or user-interaction-triggered path, and the leak alone does not yield code execution or privilege escalation, though leaked kernel pointers or data could support follow-on attacks such as KASLR bypass or credential material recovery when chained with a separate primitive.
