Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concurrent conditions: (1) the rclone WebDAV backend must be configured with Basic authentication credentials, bearer tokens, or session cookies - rclone installations using token-only backends (OAuth, S3, etc.) are not affected; (2) the WebDAV endpoint, an intermediate load balancer, gateway, or CDN in the path must issue a same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect during a rclone session - this is not a default WebDAV server behavior, but can result from misconfiguration, gateway policy, or an adversarial endpoint; (3) the attacker must hold an adjacent or on-path network position capable of observing the plaintext HTTP hop after the redirect is followed. Limiting factors: AV:A constrains the attacker to adjacent network segments; AC:H and AT:P indicate the redirect condition is not guaranteed to occur; a malicious original WebDAV endpoint does not benefit from this attack since it already receives credentials directly.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) reflects a realistic but constrained threat: adjacent network access is required (AV:A), exploitation complexity is high (AC:H), and a specific attack precondition must be met (AT:P) - the WebDAV endpoint, gateway, or accelerator must emit a same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect. The high confidentiality impact (VC:H) is accurate because captured Basic passwords and session cookies are complete, reusable credentials. No EPSS data was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from that signal. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, and no publicly circulating exploit code has been identified beyond the controlled PoC in the GHSA advisory. The practical risk is moderate: it requires a specific network position plus a misconfigured or adversarially controlled WebDAV gateway, making mass exploitation unlikely. For organizations running rclone against WebDAV endpoints over infrastructure they do not fully control, the risk of targeted credential theft is meaningful.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with an adjacent network position - for example, on the same LAN, VLAN, or cloud subnet - intercepts traffic from a host running rclone against a WebDAV endpoint. The WebDAV server or an intermediate gateway issues a legitimate 307 Temporary Redirect from the HTTPS endpoint to an HTTP listener on the same hostname and a different port. rclone follows the redirect while preserving the WebDAV method and forwards the Authorization: Basic header and configured cookies in cleartext, which the attacker captures and replays to perform WebDAV read or write operations under the compromised account's permissions.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 25, 2026

Credential exposure in rclone's WebDAV backend allows an adjacent on-path attacker to capture and replay Basic authentication passwords, bearer tokens, or session cookies transmitted in cleartext after a same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP redirect. All rclone versions through v1.74.0-240 are affected when the WebDAV backend is configured with Basic credentials or cookie-based authentication. No public exploit code has been released, but a proof-of-concept was demonstrated and documented in the GHSA advisory as part of responsible disclosure.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: v1.75.0. Upgrade rclone to v1.75.0 or later, which introduces strict transport-scheme validation in redirect handling, rejecting any HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrade before credentials are forwarded. The fix is in commit https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/59b513b0e74fd2943ccbb8891d5ce00f860e6d26. Full advisory is at https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-h4mf-4v27-hggj. If immediate upgrade is not possible, a compensating control is to disable WebDAV redirect following in rclone configuration where the option is available, accepting that some WebDAV operations may fail. Alternatively, restrict rclone's network path to segments where adjacent on-path interception is not feasible, such as a dedicated encrypted overlay or a VPN tunnel between rclone and the WebDAV endpoint. These workarounds do not eliminate the code-level flaw and should be treated as temporary mitigations only.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-319 (Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information) arising from rclone's PreserveMethodRedirectFn in lib/rest/rest.go:218-231. This function limits redirect count and restores the original HTTP method but does not validate that the redirect preserves the original transport scheme. It relies on Go's default hostname-oriented sensitive-header forwarding rules, which can preserve Authorization and Cookie headers across same-host redirects even when the new URL downgrades from HTTPS to plaintext HTTP. The affected credential types include Basic passwords, bearer authorization, SharePoint/session cookies, and any configured secret headers, as set up in backend/webdav/webdav.go:127-139 and fs/fshttp/http.go:311-329. CPE cpe:2.3:a:rclone:rclone:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the full affected range through v1.74.0-240.

DescriptionCVE.org

rclone versions before v1.75.0 fail to reject transport downgrades in redirect handling, allowing Basic authorization and Cookie headers to be replayed over plaintext HTTP after same-host HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects. An on-path attacker observing the plaintext hop can capture and reuse credentials to perform WebDAV operations with the compromised account's permissions.
