n8n is an open source workflow automation platform. Prior to 1.123.64, 2.29.8, and 2.30.1, the Git node clone operation allows an authenticated workflow user to swap a validated directory for a symlink before cloning, planting a crafted repository in the community node directory that loads as a custom JavaScript node after restart and executes arbitrary code on the server. This issue is fixed in versions 1.123.64, 2.29.8, and 2.30.1.
AnalysisAI
Remote code execution in n8n workflow automation platform (all versions prior to 1.123.64, 2.29.8, and 2.30.1) stems from a TOCTOU race condition in the Git node's clone operation, allowing any low-privileged authenticated user to achieve arbitrary JavaScript execution on the server. The attacker wins a race between path validation and the actual clone, replacing a legitimate directory with a symlink to plant a crafted repository in n8n's community node directory - which the platform loads and executes as trusted JavaScript on the next restart. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires: (1) a valid n8n user account with at minimum workflow creation and execution permissions (PR:L confirmed by CVSS vector); (2) the Git node must not be excluded via the NODES_EXCLUDE environment variable - it is available by default; (3) the attacker must win a filesystem TOCTOU race window (AC:H/AT:P - high complexity with a specific attack precondition), which may require repeated attempts or scripted timing; (4) a subsequent n8n server restart must occur for the planted node to be loaded and executed, either triggered by the attacker or occurring naturally. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.9 (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) correctly reflects that exploitation is non-trivial: AC:H and AT:P acknowledge the race condition timing requirement and prerequisite conditions, specifically that the Git node must be available and the attacker must be able to create and execute workflows. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | The primary fix is to upgrade n8n to one of the three patched releases: 1.123.64 (for 1.x deployments), 2.29.8 (for 2.0.x-2.29.x deployments), or 2.30.1 (for 2.30.x deployments). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
