Impact is a crash (A:H, no C/I); AC:H because it requires the app to forward attacker-controlled coordinates and specific near-INT32-boundary values, so reachability is conditional though unauthenticated.

DescriptionCVE.org

Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 12.3.0, Pillow public image coordinate APIs can trigger a native heap out-of-bounds write when given coordinates near the signed 32-bit integer limits in Image.paste(), Image.crop(), or Image.alpha_composite(). This issue is fixed in version 12.3.0.

AnalysisAI

Denial of service (and potential memory corruption) in Python Pillow before 12.3.0 arises when public image coordinate APIs - Image.paste(), Image.crop(), and Image.alpha_composite() - are handed box coordinates near the signed 32-bit integer boundary (±2**31), causing a native heap out-of-bounds write in the C imaging core. Any application that forwards untrusted coordinate values into these calls can be crashed, and the OOB write raises the theoretical prospect of heap corruption. No public exploit identified at time of analysis; the fix (integer-overflow-safe int64_t arithmetic) shipped in 12.3.0.

Technical ContextAI

Pillow (python-pillow, cpe:2.3:a:python-pillow:pillow) is the de-facto Python imaging library, wrapping performance-critical routines in a C extension (libImaging). The flaw is a classic CWE-190 integer overflow: in ImagingPaste (Paste.c) and ImagingFill2 the region width/height were computed as 32-bit ints via xsize = dx1 - dx0 and ysize = dy1 - dy0. When box coordinates approach INT32_MIN/INT32_MAX (e.g. (231-1, 0, -(231), 1)), that subtraction overflows, yielding a bogus size that drives a heap write past the allocated pixel buffer. The upstream fix casts to int64_t before subtraction (xsize = (int64_t)dx1 - dx0) so the intermediate difference cannot wrap, and adds regression tests that expect a clean ValueError ('images do not match') instead of a memory-unsafe operation.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 12.3.0 - upgrade to Pillow 12.3.0 or later (pip install --upgrade 'Pillow>=12.3.0'), which replaces the overflow-prone 32-bit size arithmetic with int64_t math (commit ceefc348eb3c3844c7f9796ef2cc3a7dd5fbba7b, PR https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/pull/9703). Consult the advisory at https://github.com/python-pillow/Pillow/security/advisories/GHSA-6r8x-57c9-28j4. If you cannot upgrade immediately, apply application-side input validation: clamp/reject any user-supplied box coordinates for paste/crop/alpha_composite to sane image bounds (well within a few multiples of the actual image dimensions) before calling Pillow - this closes the trigger with essentially no functional side effect since legitimate coordinates are never near ±2**31. Avoid exposing raw coordinate parameters from untrusted HTTP input to these APIs; the trade-off is minor added validation code versus a hard-to-detect native crash.
