Exploitation Conditions

The victim must establish an RDP connection to an attacker-controlled or compromised server using a FreeRDP client built with H264 codec support. H264 must be negotiated for the session - if the server does not offer or the client does not accept H264, the vulnerable decompression path is never reached. The user must actively initiate or be redirected into the connection (UI:P). No authentication or privileges are required on the attacker's side since they control the server endpoint. Exploitation is limited by: (1) the requirement for active user connection to a malicious server, (2) H264 codec negotiation being in effect, and (3) the vulnerability being client-side only - server-side FreeRDP deployments are not affected by this specific flaw.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:N/VA:H) reflects a realistic threat model: the attacker controls or impersonates an RDP server, requires no privileges on the victim system, and needs only passive user interaction (connecting to the server). The VC:H rating indicates potential for significant memory disclosure - leaked process memory from an RDP client could include credentials or session tokens. VA:H reflects crash risk. However, this is not a zero-interaction vulnerability; a user must actively connect to the malicious server, which limits opportunistic mass exploitation. EPSS data is not present in the input, and no KEV listing exists, so exploitation likelihood must be inferred from structure alone. The vulnerability spans all four H264 backends, meaning the attack surface is broad across platforms (Linux, Android, Windows). Despite the absence of a public exploit, the network-reachable, low-complexity nature means even modest RDP server operators - such as a mid-sized municipal IT team - should treat this as a priority patch given the confidentiality impact. The integrity impact is correctly rated N since an OOB read does not modify state.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker operates a malicious RDP server and social-engineers or network-redirects a victim into connecting with a FreeRDP client. Once the RDP session begins streaming H264-encoded desktop video, the server sends frames encoded with dimensions smaller than the negotiated context dimensions. The FreeRDP client's decompress() function reads beyond the allocated frame buffer, leaking process memory contents to the server-side attacker and potentially crashing the client. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Aug 19, 2026

Out-of-bounds read in FreeRDP's H264 decompression codec allows a malicious or compromised RDP server to trigger memory disclosure and potential client crash when a user connects and receives crafted video frames with mismatched dimensions. Affected clients include all FreeRDP builds prior to 3.27.0 using any of the supported H264 backends (FFmpeg, OpenH264, Android MediaCodec, Windows Media Foundation). No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, though CVSS 4.0 signals high confidentiality and availability impact with only passive user interaction required.

FreeRDP on Alpine Linux was patched in package version 3.27.1-r0, addressing an unspecified vulnerability. The nature, severity, and exploitability of this vulnerability are unknown - no CVE description, CVSS vector, or CWE has been published at time of analysis. The sole confirmed fact is that Alpine Linux issued a package update fixing FreeRDP, as reported by the Alpine Linux vendor security team. Security teams should treat this as a pending disclosure and monitor for upstream FreeRDP advisories.

RemediationAI

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.27.0 or later, which includes the bounds-check fix across all four H264 backend decompress() functions (commit 0cd45b70bb1fe6befd258ff64c46461947e99adb). Alpine Linux users should upgrade to the freerdp-3.27.1-r0 package. The upstream advisory is at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-3mmf-qh4f-frm6 and the fix release at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/releases/tag/3.27.0. If patching is not immediately possible, the most actionable compensating control is to restrict FreeRDP clients to connecting only to known, trusted RDP servers via network policy or allowlist, which eliminates the malicious-server attack vector entirely. Disabling H264 codec negotiation in FreeRDP (if exposed as a client-side configuration option) would also eliminate the vulnerable code path, at the cost of falling back to less-efficient codecs.

Technical ContextAI · show details

FreeRDP is an open-source Remote Desktop Protocol client library. Its H264 video codec support is implemented across four pluggable backends: libavcodec (FFmpeg), OpenH264, Android MediaCodec, and Windows Media Foundation. CWE-125 (Out-of-Bounds Read) is the root cause: prior to the fix, none of the decompress() functions in h264_ffmpeg.c, h264_openh264.c, h264_mediacodec.c, or h264_mf.c validated that the decoded frame dimensions (width/height returned by the decoder) were at least as large as the expected H264 context dimensions (h264->width / h264->height). A server-controlled frame with smaller-than-expected dimensions would cause subsequent buffer copy operations to read beyond the allocated frame buffer, exposing adjacent memory contents and potentially crashing the client process.

DescriptionCVE.org

Alpine Linux: freerdp fixed in 3.27.1-r0

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FreeRDP, a widely-deployed remote desktop client library, contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in H264 video codec handling that allows compromised or malicious RDP servers to extract sensitive memory from connecting clients and trigger application crashes. This affects all FreeRDP installations using standard video codecs prior to version 3.27.0. Organizations must urgently identify exposed FreeRDP deployments and implement interim protective measures until patches become available.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable H264 video codec support where alternative codecs are available; restrict RDP client connectivity to internal, trusted RDP infrastructure only; implement network segmentation to isolate systems connecting to external RDP servers; ensure memory protection (DEP/ASLR) is enabled on affected client systems; monitor vendor advisories for version 3.27.0 release and subsequent updates.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
