DescriptionCVE.org

IBM PowerVM Hypervisor FW1120.00, FW1110.00 through FW1110.30, FW1060.00 through FW1060.80, and FW950.00 through FW950.H2 is affected by a vulnerability in the PowerVM hypervisor call interface. An attacker with root access to a guest partition can issue a specially crafted hypervisor call to inject an arbitrary amount of data into hypervisor or partition memory, resulting in either a crash causing a full platform re-IPL and terminating all hosted partitions, or corruption of hypervisor or partition memory. The PowerVM hypervisor will restart automatically; however, repeated exploitation could result in a sustained availability impact. Successful exploitation results in an integrity and availability impact to the managed system.

AnalysisAI

IBM PowerVM Hypervisor across four firmware trains (FW950 through FW1120) exposes an integer overflow (CWE-190) in its hypervisor call interface that permits a guest partition root user to inject arbitrary quantities of data into hypervisor or co-resident partition memory. The scope change (S:C in CVSS) reflects that exploitation crosses the guest-hypervisor isolation boundary, enabling either a full platform re-IPL that terminates every co-hosted partition or silent corruption of hypervisor and partition memory. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires root (superuser/UID-0) access within a guest logical partition (LPAR) running on IBM POWER hardware with an affected PowerVM firmware version - this is the single hard prerequisite from which all other conditions follow. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 score of 8.4 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:H) correctly captures the two defining characteristics of this vulnerability: a low-complexity local exploit that escapes guest-partition boundaries. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Apply the IBM-released firmware patches for the affected firmware train in use, as documented in the vendor advisory at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7283229. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: catalog all IBM PowerVM deployments and identify systems running affected firmware versions FW950-FW1120; establish communication with virtualization teams on patch timelines and maintenance coordination. …
