Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated n8n account with permission to create, modify, or import workflows (PR:L), plus the ability to add one of three specific deprecated/hidden node types: the Function node, the Function Item node, or the LangChain Code node (n8n-nodes-base.function, n8n-nodes-base.functionItem, @n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.code). On vulnerable releases these nodes execute user code in the n8n main process rather than the isolated task runner. What limits exploitation: the attacker must already be authenticated with workflow-authoring rights, and the affected node types are deprecated and hidden. On patched versions (2.42.6, 2.43.3, 2.44.0, 3.0.1) saving or importing a workflow that adds or changes these nodes is rejected by default, so exploitation additionally requires that an operator has set N8N_DEPRECATED_NODES_BLOCK=false (which restores the vulnerable behavior) or is still running a pre-fix version; note that already-saved workflows containing these nodes continue to run unchanged even after patching.

Impact

This is a genuine, high-priority issue but not an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) correctly captures that exploitation is network-reachable, low-complexity, and requires only low-privilege authentication (PR:L) - specifically an account that can create, modify, or import workflows. Impact is severe (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) because code runs in the n8n main process, outside the task runner isolation that normally contains Code node execution, so a successful attacker gains full read/write/availability control of the n8n host. The vuln.today Decision label is this_week, consistent with a serious authenticated RCE that is not yet mass-exploited. No EPSS score and no KEV listing were provided, so there is no signal of widespread or confirmed active exploitation; absence of these is not itself evidence of safety. A public research write-up (abraxaslabs.tech, 'n8n-function-vm2') and a VulnCheck advisory are referenced, but the input does not mark any of them as confirmed working exploit code, so this should be treated as a public PoC reference rather than a verified exploit. The practical risk gate is the PR:L requirement: in deployments where many users (or SSO-federated/low-trust users) can author workflows, this is effectively a privilege-escalation-to-host primitive; in single-trusted-operator deployments the real-world risk is lower.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated n8n user who has permission to create or edit workflows adds a deprecated Function, Function Item, or LangChain Code node and places attacker-controlled JavaScript in it. When the workflow runs, that code executes in the n8n main process rather than the isolated task runner, giving the attacker arbitrary code execution on the n8n server. A public PoC reference exists (abraxaslabs.tech research and the VulnCheck advisory); it is not verified as working exploit code in the supplied data.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

n8n workflow automation instances older than 2.42.6, 2.43.x before 2.43.3, and 3.x before 3.0.1 let an authenticated user with workflow-authoring rights escape the task runner isolation that normally constrains custom code. By creating, editing, or importing a workflow that names one of the deprecated hidden node types (Function, Function Item, or LangChain Code), that user can execute arbitrary JavaScript inside the n8n main process rather than in the sandboxed runner, giving full compromise of the application host process. Severity is high (CVSS 8.7, CWE-653) but exploitation requires a valid account plus workflow-authoring permission; no confirmed public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and vendor patches are available for all three branches, with the priority assessed as this week rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to n8n 2.42.6, 2.43.3, 2.44.0, or 3.0.1 (or later on the respective branch), which mark the Function, Function Item, and LangChain Code nodes as deprecated and block them by default on save, import, and unsaved-workflow execution. Do not set N8N_DEPRECATED_NODES_BLOCK=false - that setting exists only to allow importing older backups and restores the vulnerable behavior, so if it is used temporarily, re-enable the block immediately afterward. Because already-saved workflows containing these nodes continue to run unchanged after the upgrade, review existing workflows and replace any Function, Function Item, or LangChain Code nodes with the Code node, which executes inside task runner isolation. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the vendor's temporary mitigations are to add n8n-nodes-base.function, n8n-nodes-base.functionItem, and @n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.code to the NODES_EXCLUDE environment variable, which prevents those nodes from being used at the cost of breaking any existing workflows that depend on them, and to restrict workflow creation and editing permissions to fully trusted users, which reduces but does not eliminate the attack surface from users who already hold authoring rights. The vendor states these workarounds do not fully remediate the risk and should be treated as short-term measures only; see https://github.com/n8n-io/n8n/security/advisories/GHSA-9p7v-45m2-wxgj for the full guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-653, improper isolation or compartmentalization of resources. n8n's supported Code node executes user-supplied JavaScript inside an isolated task runner, but three legacy node types predate that architecture: n8n-nodes-base.function and n8n-nodes-base.functionItem, which run user code in a vm2 sandbox, and @n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.code (the LangChain Code node), which runs user code directly in the n8n main process with no runner boundary at all. All three are deprecated and hidden from the node palette, so they are not reachable through normal UI discovery; the exposure comes from workflows that reference the node types explicitly by name, whether authored via API, imported as JSON, pulled from a URL or file, or executed as an inline sub-workflow. The vendor fix (commit ea8417e29ad6f8b981d9a04b17283d5d77f2b5bb) adds a nodes.config.ts setting N8N_DEPRECATED_NODES_BLOCK defaulting to true, marks the affected node descriptions as deprecated, and introduces a DeprecatedNodesValidationService plus a DeprecatedNodesError response that rejects saving or importing a workflow which adds or changes a node of a deprecated type, and rejects inline sub-workflows, URL/file-loaded workflows, and single-node runs that contain one. Notably the validation service intentionally permits previously stored workflows to load and keep executing, so persistence of an already-saved malicious workflow survives the upgrade.

DescriptionCVE.org

n8n before 2.42.6, 2.43.x before 2.43.3, and 3.x before 3.0.1 contains a remote code execution vulnerability via deprecated Function, Function Item, and LangChain Code nodes running outside task runner isolation. Authenticated users who can create, modify, or import workflows naming these hidden node types can execute JavaScript in the n8n main process.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-119408 is a high-severity flaw in n8n workflow automation that lets users with workflow authoring rights break out of the intended sandbox and run code directly in the main application process, fully compromising the host. Leadership should care because our automation platform likely holds credentials and integrates with critical systems, so insider misuse or a compromised author account could lead to data exposure and service disruption across dependent business processes.
