The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target repository (parse-community/parse-server, or any public fork with GitHub Actions enabled) to run the vulnerable ci-performance.yml workflow that is triggered by 'pull_request_target' and granted pull-requests:write / issues:write permissions plus secret access. An attacker must be able to open a pull request from a fork whose code or lifecycle scripts are then executed within the base-repository context. Limiting factors: the impact is confined to the repository's CI/CD infrastructure and secrets - it does NOT affect runtime Parse Server deployments; it depends on the specific workflow configuration present only before version 8.6.0-alpha.2; and it requires the workflow to actually execute untrusted fork-supplied code under the elevated trigger.

Impact

This is a CI/CD supply-chain weakness, not a flaw in deployed Parse Server instances. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with low confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:L/VI:L) yields a MEDIUM score of 6.9, which is consistent with the description: a GitHub Actions workflow (ci-performance.yml) triggered via 'pull_request_target' runs with the base repository's elevated GITHUB_TOKEN (pull-requests: write, issues: write) and secrets while potentially executing code supplied by a fork's pull request. EPSS is low at 0.42% (34th percentile) and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, indicating no evidence of mass exploitation. There is no POC referenced - only patch commits and the GHSA advisory - so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The 'RCE' tag overstates the real impact: this does not grant code execution on production Parse Server deployments, only on the project's own CI runners. Net priority is LOW-to-MEDIUM and essentially nil for anyone merely consuming Parse Server as a dependency; it is relevant only to maintainers/forks of the parse-community/parse-server repository. One signal to verify: the vendor rated confidentiality as only VC:L despite the workflow exposing repository secrets, which could arguably justify higher confidentiality impact - defenders mirroring this CI pattern should treat secret exposure as a serious outcome regardless of the rated metric.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker forks the parse-server repository and opens a pull request containing malicious lifecycle scripts or code. Because the ci-performance.yml workflow uses the 'pull_request_target' trigger, it executes in the context of the base repository with write-scoped GITHUB_TOKEN and access to secrets, allowing the fork-supplied code to steal those secrets or push changes. No public exploit code is referenced, but the pull_request_target misconfiguration class is well-documented and trivially reproducible.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

Confidentiality and integrity of the Parse Server project's own GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline are at risk because the repository's ci-performance.yml workflow used the 'pull_request_target' trigger while holding write permissions (pull-requests: write, issues: write) and access to repository secrets, allowing code supplied by an external fork - or its lifecycle scripts - to execute inside the privileged base-repository context. Only the project's automation infrastructure, including public forks with GitHub Actions enabled, is exposed; deployed Parse Server instances are unaffected. Exploitation of this CI/CD supply-chain weakness has not been observed in the wild (no public exploit identified at time of analysis), and overall risk is low given a 0.42% EPSS score (34th percentile), though the flaw is rated 6.9 under both CVSS v4.0 and the independently assessed CVSS v3.1 vector. Remote, unauthenticated attackers who can open a pull request from a fork are the threat model; vendor-released fixes exist in 8.6.0-alpha.2 and the commits 6b9f896 and e3d27fe.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Parse Server 8.6.0-alpha.2 or later, which incorporates commits 6b9f896 (retargeting ci-performance.yml from pull_request_target to pull_request and removing the pull-requests:write and issues:write permissions) and e3d27fe; consult the advisory at https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-6w8g-mgvv-3fcj. For maintainers of forks or clones that cannot immediately upgrade, apply the equivalent workflow hardening directly: change the offending workflow's trigger from pull_request_target back to pull_request (side effect: PRs from forks no longer receive secrets or write-scoped tokens, so benchmark-comment and auto-push features will stop working for external contributors), remove or downgrade the workflow-level 'pull-requests: write' and 'issues: write' permissions to read-only (side effect: automated PR commenting must move to a separate, narrowly scoped workflow), and avoid checking out or executing PR head code, npm lifecycle/install scripts, or fork-controlled artifacts inside any job that has secrets in scope. As a further compensating control, restrict Actions on public forks (disable Actions or require approval for first-time contributors) - this prevents untrusted workflow runs entirely at the cost of reduced contributor automation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code / Code Injection) realized in a GitHub Actions workflow configuration rather than in Parse Server's Node.js runtime code. The 'pull_request_target' event executes in the context of the base repository, meaning it receives the base repository's GITHUB_TOKEN with the permissions declared in the workflow and has access to repository secrets, unlike the safer 'pull_request' event which runs with read-only permissions and no secrets for fork-originated PRs. The vulnerable ci-performance.yml combined that elevated trigger with 'pull-requests: write' and 'issues: write' permissions and third-party actions (benchmark-action/github-action-benchmark@v1, thollander/actions-comment-pull-request@v2) that consume PR-supplied data, and the checkout/lifecycle steps could pull in code (including npm lifecycle/install scripts) from the untrusted fork. The patch diff shows the trigger switched from 'pull_request_target' to 'pull_request' and the write permissions and PR-commenting/benchmark steps removed. CPE data confirms only parse-community:parse-server for Node.js is affected, including the 8.6.0-alpha1 pre-release, but the practical blast radius is any checkout of the project (or public fork with Actions enabled) still running the old workflow - the Parse Server application itself is not vulnerable at runtime.

DescriptionCVE.org

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that runs Node.js. In versions prior to 8.6.0-alpha.2, a GitHub CI workflow is triggered in a way that grants the GitHub Actions workflow elevated permissions, giving it access to GitHub secrets and write permissions which are defined in the workflow. Code from a fork or lifecycle scripts is potentially included. Only the repository's CI/CD infrastructure is affected, including any public GitHub forks with GitHub Actions enabled. This issue is fixed version 8.6.0-alpha.2 and commits 6b9f896 and e3d27fe.

Attack Technique

Code Injection CRITICAL

Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
