Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account with edit rights over at least one document - critically, the ability to edit one's own user profile suffices, so on any XWiki instance permitting self-registration or granting normal users profile-edit rights, this is reachable by ordinary/low-trust users (PR:L). The vulnerable behavior triggers when a wiki-syntax field's rendered output is embedded in an HTML macro; the attacker closes the macro via {{/html}} variants (including forms with spaces after the macro name) and injects script macros. No user interaction by a victim and no non-default configuration is required beyond having script/programming-rights macros processable in the standard rendering pipeline. Affected: xwiki-rendering-xml <16.10.10, >=17.0.0-rc-1 <17.4.3, and >=17.5.0-rc-1 <17.6.0-rc-1; no workaround exists other than upgrading.

Impact

This is a genuinely high-priority issue, not merely a high-CVSS paper tiger. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) plus full VC:H/VI:H/VA:H indicates a remotely reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring only a low-privilege authenticated account - and the GHSA confirms that privilege bar is extremely low: any user who can edit their own profile qualifies, which on most XWiki instances includes any self-registered/regular user. CWE-95 (eval injection) combined with the ability to run Groovy/Python script macros with programming rights means the impact is full RCE and unrestricted read/write across the wiki. Publicly available exploit code exists (the GHSA supplies a concrete payload {{html}}{{/html {{/html}}}} and the JIRA tickets are referenced as exploit sources), which sharply raises real-world risk even though there is no CISA KEV listing and no confirmed active exploitation. EPSS is moderate at 1.02% (62nd percentile) - elevated but not extreme - consistent with a public PoC that is not yet part of automated mass-exploitation. The main gating factor is authentication (PR:L), so the practical risk is highest for instances that permit open registration or have many low-trust users. Signals are consistent across sources: vendor GHSA, NVD, source-code diffs, and PoC all agree on mechanism and impact.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged but authenticated XWiki user edits a wiki-syntax field they control (e.g., the 'About' field of their own profile) and inserts a payload such as {{html}}{{/html {{/html}}}} that escapes the wrapping HTML macro. Because rendering output is embedded in an HTML macro with insufficient escaping of the closing {{/html}} token (especially variants with spaces after the macro name), the attacker can then inject script macros (Groovy/Python) that execute with programming rights, achieving RCE and full read/write access to wiki content. A public PoC and detailed advisory exist, making reproduction straightforward.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Remote code execution in XWiki Rendering versions prior to 16.10.10, 17.4.3, and 17.6.0-rc-1 allows any authenticated user with edit rights-including the ability to edit their own profile-to inject script macros via insufficiently escaped {{/html}} syntax. Successful exploitation enables arbitrary Groovy or Python macro execution, granting full read/write access to all wiki contents. Public exploit code is available (EPSS 1.02%, 62nd percentile), and though not confirmed actively exploited, the low privilege requirement makes immediate patching critical.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patches are available: upgrade to XWiki Rendering 16.10.10 (for the 16.10.x branch), 17.4.3 (for the 17.4.x branch), or 17.6.0-rc-1 (for the 17.5.x/17.6.x branch). The GitHub advisory states that no workarounds exist other than upgrading. If immediate patching is not possible, as a temporary compensating control with significant trade-offs, you could restrict document edit permissions to trusted users (e.g., disable self-registration, remove profile-edit rights for regular users) and disable script macros (Groovy, Python) if not required-but these measures may break legitimate functionality and do not fully mitigate the vulnerability. Apply the patch from the advisory: https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-rendering/security/advisories/GHSA-9xc6-c2rm-f27p. Technical ContextAI · show details

XWiki Rendering (module xwiki-rendering-xml) is a generic rendering system that converts wiki syntax into HTML and other formats. The vulnerability (CWE-95: Improper Neutralization of Directives in Dynamically Evaluated Code) arises because the XHTMLWikiPrinter and XWikiDocument classes failed to adequately escape opening and closing HTML macro syntax ({{html and {{/html) in rendered output. When a wiki-syntax field is later embedded within an HTML macro, an attacker can close the macro prematurely-using variants like {{/html}} with optional spaces-and inject arbitrary script macros (e.g., Groovy, Python). These macros execute with programming rights, leading to remote code execution and unrestricted read/write access to all wiki content. The patch extends escaping to cover both opening and closing macro syntaxes, as shown in commit diffs that replace {{html and {{/html with HTML entities ({{html and {{/html). Affected CPEs include cpe:2.3:a:xwiki:xwiki-rendering:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* with specific version entries for 17.5.0 and 17.5.0:rc1.

DescriptionCVE.org

XWiki Rendering is a generic rendering system that converts textual input in a given syntax (wiki syntax, HTML, etc) into another syntax (XHTML, etc). Versions 16.10.9 and below, 17.0.0-rc-1 through 17.4.2 and 17.5.0-rc-1 through 17.5.0 have insufficient protection against {{/html}} injection, which attackers can exploit through RCE. Any user who can edit their own profile or any other document can execute arbitrary script macros, including Groovy and Python macros, which enable remote code execution as well as unrestricted read and write access to all wiki contents. This issue is fixed in versions 16.10.10, 17.4.3 and 17.6.0-rc-1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

XWiki Rendering contains a high-severity remote code execution flaw that can allow users with edit rights to compromise all wiki content. Publicly available exploit code exists, and the low privilege requirement means many internal users could trigger it. Leadership should prioritize patching because a successful attack could expose or alter sensitive knowledge assets, disrupt collaboration, and require costly incident response.

Attack Technique

Code Injection CRITICAL

Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.

Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
