| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an existing authenticated low-privilege local presence on the affected Windows DNS Server host (AV:L, PR:L) - this is NOT remotely exploitable by an anonymous attacker. The flaw lies in the DNS Server's cryptographic signature verification (CWE-347), so a signature-validating configuration (e.g. DNSSEC-related record handling) must be in use for the tampering to have meaning. Limiting factors: the attacker must already be authorized on the system, there is no user-interaction vector to leverage remotely, impact is confined to integrity (no confidentiality or availability loss), and affected hosts must be running a Windows build below the patched versions listed in the EUVD (e.g. Server 2022 <10.0.20348.5761, Server 2025 <10.0.26100.33650). |
| Impact | This is a genuinely moderate, not urgent, issue and the signals are internally consistent. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, base 5.5) describes a locally exploitable, low-privilege (PR:L, therefore authenticated) tampering flaw with high integrity impact but no confidentiality or availability impact - matching CWE-347 (improper cryptographic signature verification) and the description's 'authorized attacker ... tampering locally.' CISA's SSVC framework reinforces low urgency: Exploitation=none (no observed or public exploitation), Automatable=no, and Technical Impact=partial. EPSS and KEV data were not supplied; absence of a KEV entry combined with SSVC Exploitation=none means there is no evidence of active exploitation ('no public exploit identified at time of analysis'). The one tension worth noting is in the vendor-supplied Tags ('Information Disclosure', 'Jwt Attack'), which conflict with the CVSS impact profile - the vector shows C:N with I:H, i.e. an integrity/tampering flaw, not information disclosure, and nothing in a DNS Server signature-verification defect relates to JWT. Treat those tags as unreliable. Net: a legitimate patch-in-normal-cycle item, prioritized by exposure of the affected DNS servers rather than imminent threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already holds a low-privileged authenticated foothold on an affected Windows DNS Server host abuses the server's improper verification of a cryptographic signature to forge or alter signed DNS data (e.g. DNSSEC-related records) that the server would otherwise reject. Because the flaw is local (AV:L) with no confidentiality or availability impact, the realistic outcome is tampering with DNS integrity rather than data theft or outage. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and SSVC lists Exploitation=none. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Improper verification of cryptographic signatures in the Windows DNS Server component lets an authenticated, low-privileged attacker who already has local access to the host tamper with data that the service is supposed to validate, with the impact confined to integrity (no loss of confidentiality or availability). Exploitation is local only (AV:L, PR:L, UI:N) and requires a signature-validating configuration to be in use for the tampering to have meaning, so this is a moderate, non-urgent issue rather than a remotely reachable emergency. No public exploit code exists and there is no evidence of active exploitation, and CISA's SSVC assessment records Exploitation as none and Automatable as no; Microsoft has published patched builds that resolve the flaw.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Microsoft has published fixed builds for every affected platform, so upgrade to the build at or above the threshold for your edition - Windows Server 2022 10.0.20348.5761, Windows Server 2025 10.0.26100.33650, Windows Server 2019 and Windows 10 Version 1809 10.0.17763.9376, Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 Version 1607 10.0.14393.9612, Windows Server 2012 R2 6.3.9600.23470, and Windows Server 2012 6.2.9200.26434 - applying the corresponding Microsoft update documented at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-70071 (patch data is recorded as available from the vendor). Because the attack path is local and privilege-gated, the most effective compensating controls are host hygiene rather than network filtering: restrict interactive logon and Remote Desktop rights on DNS Server hosts to the smallest possible administrative group, since the attacker must already be an authorized low-privileged local user, and audit local group membership for stale or unnecessary accounts. If DNSSEC validation is not actually required in your environment, disabling signature-dependent validation features on the DNS role removes the exploitable code path entirely, at the cost of losing DNSSEC integrity guarantees for your zones; conversely, if validation is required for compliance or resolution correctness, this workaround is not viable and the build upgrade is mandatory. Note also that blocking network ports does not mitigate this issue, because the vector is local, and that there is no user-interaction element to defend against. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so patching can be scheduled in a normal maintenance cycle with priority given to hosts where low-privileged local access is broadly granted.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-347, Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature, in the DNS Server role shipped with Windows Server. Rather than a memory-safety bug or a protocol parsing error, this is a logic/trust failure: the component accepts or fails to properly check a digital signature, so data protected by that signature can be modified without the modification being detected. The independent assessment notes that a signature-validating configuration - for example DNSSEC-related record handling - must be in play for the tampering to have real effect, which is consistent with the vendor-supplied tags referencing signature-related attack classes. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N is the key scoping fact: the attack vector is Local, not Network, and the privilege requirement is Low, meaning an attacker must already hold a valid, authorized foothold on the DNS Server host; scope is unchanged, and only the Integrity metric is High while Confidentiality and Availability are None. There is no user-interaction component to leverage remotely, and the SSVC entry (Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial) reinforces that this is not a wormable or mass-exploitable condition. Any product-level tagging that evokes JWT or token-signature attacks should be read as describing the same underlying signature-forgery weakness class, not as evidence that the DNS service exposes a network-facing token endpoint.
