Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to install a theme from an untrusted/third-party Git repository via 'omarchy theme install' and then apply it with omarchy-theme-set on Omarchy 4 prior to 4.0.1. The code runs because, before the fix, theme files that name or load programs were staged unchecked: any .lua file (hyprland.lua and gum_env.lua loaded by Hyprland at login, neovim.lua at Neovim startup), terminal configs that specify the launched program (alacritty.toml, foot.ini, ghostty.conf, kitty.conf), and vscode.json (which installs an arbitrary VS Code extension). LIMITING FACTORS: the attack is gated on deliberate user action (installing and applying an attacker-supplied theme - UI:R), is confined to Omarchy versions before 4.0.1, and only yields the victim user's own privileges (not root). Users who only use bundled/trusted themes are not exposed.

Impact

This is a High-scored (CVSS 7.1) code-execution flaw, but the composite signals point to moderate-to-low real-world urgency rather than a drop-everything priority. The impact metrics are what inflate the score - C:H/I:H reflect arbitrary code running in the victim's user context (CWE-829, inclusion of functionality from an untrusted control sphere) - while the exploitability metrics heavily constrain it: AC:H and UI:R mean the victim must deliberately fetch and apply a theme from an attacker-controlled Git repository. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so there is no evidence of active or automatable exploitation; this behaves as a trust-boundary/social-engineering issue, not a remotely triggerable network service bug. CONFLICTING SIGNAL: the NVD vector asserts AV:N, yet the vulnerability actually fires when Omarchy locally processes/stages files from a theme the user already installed - the 'network' aspect is only that the malicious content is hosted in a Git repo the victim chooses to clone. This is closer to a malicious-file (AV:L) scenario, so the AV:N framing overstates remote reach - verify against the vendor advisory. Net: a legitimate RCE worth patching to 4.0.1, but exploitation depends entirely on a user opting into untrusted themes, and the affected product has a small footprint.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker publishes a malicious Omarchy theme in a public Git repository and promotes it (forum, social post, theme list). A victim runs 'omarchy theme install <url>' and applies it; the theme ships executable payloads - a hyprland.lua/neovim.lua, a terminal config (e.g. alacritty.toml/kitty.conf) that names the program the terminal launches, or a vscode.json that installs an arbitrary VS Code extension - which execute in the victim's session. No public exploit code was identified, though the fix PR #7884 documents the exact mechanisms abused.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 11, 2026

Omarchy 4 before 4.0.1 stages files from third-party themes without filtering executable content, so installing a theme from an untrusted Git repository and applying it with omarchy-theme-set lets the theme author run code as the victim user: Hyprland loads a theme's hyprland.lua and gum_env.lua at login, Neovim loads neovim.lua at startup, terminal configs (alacritty.toml, foot.ini, ghostty.conf, kitty.conf) name the program the terminal launches, and vscode.json installs an arbitrary VS Code extension. The CVSS 7.1 rating is tempered by the deliberate user action required - a user must choose to install and apply an attacker-supplied theme (UI:R, no credentials needed, PR:N) - and by the confinement of the resulting code to the victim's own privileges rather than root, which places real-world urgency at moderate-to-low rather than drop-everything. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not in CISA KEV; the vendor shipped a fix in the v4.0.1 release, and users who only apply bundled or self-authored themes are not exposed.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Omarchy to 4.0.1 or later, which is the first release containing the staged-theme restrictions; the release is published at https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/releases/tag/v4.0.1, with the underlying change in pull request https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/pull/7884 and commit https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/commit/ef6d9e6605b121df15bf310e630e04f0c1119fc8, and vendor guidance in https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/security/advisories/GHSA-mxm5-5433-ggf5. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the actionable compensating control is to stop installing themes you have not audited: treat 'omarchy theme install <repo>' as running untrusted code, and before applying a cloned theme inspect ~/.config/omarchy/themes/<name> for any .lua file, for alacritty.toml, foot.ini, ghostty.conf, kitty.conf or vscode.json, and for symlinks, deleting or replacing them - the trade-off is that removing those files strips the theme's non-colour customisations (terminal colour overrides, Lua-driven window behaviour, VS Code extension theming) rather than merely blocking the exploit. Do not pass repository URLs that begin with '-' or contain a '<helper>::<address>' transport helper, and do not apply themes whose derived name is empty, begins with a dot or contains a slash, since those inputs were the vector for git argument injection and for path traversal into the theme removal and plymouth/SDDM logo copy paths. Deleting themes only from directories known to be first-party, and keeping the theme tree out of any automated update pipeline that pulls remote repositories, further reduces exposure; users who apply only bundled or self-authored themes require no action beyond the upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Omarchy is an Arch Linux/Hyprland desktop configuration (repository omacom/omarchy) whose theme subsystem clones theme repositories into ~/.config/omarchy/themes and then stages the selected theme into ~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:omarchy:omarchy:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the Omarchy product broadly (the wildcard version does not pin releases), while the description and advisory scope the defect to Omarchy 4 prior to 4.0.1. The root cause class is CWE-829, Inclusion of Functionality from Untrusted Control Sphere: the staging step copied every file from a git-cloned theme verbatim, and several of those file names are load vectors rather than colour data. Hyprland requires a theme's hyprland.lua and gum_env.lua at login, Neovim executes neovim.lua at startup, each terminal config specifies the program the terminal launches, and vscode.json names a VS Code extension that omarchy-theme-set-vscode installs (arbitrary JavaScript). The v4.0.1 fix introduces an explicit denial list (INSTALLED_THEME_DENIED=(alacritty.toml foot.ini ghostty.conf kitty.conf vscode.json) plus all *.lua), stages only colour-relevant files, and reports anything dropped; legacy themes without colors.toml have their palette extracted from alacritty.toml in a scratch directory instead of copying the config. The same patch set addresses adjacent weaknesses visible in the referenced commit: symlinks are no longer followed when staging a directory or a plymouth/SDDM logo path (previously an unlock.png symlink could cause an arbitrary readable file to be republished into world-readable /usr/share), theme names derived from the repository URL are rejected if empty, leading-dot or containing a slash (a repo named '..' could otherwise direct the removal path at ~/.config/omarchy), and git URLs beginning with a dash or matching a '<helper>::<address>' transport-helper pattern are refused and passed after '--' to git clone to prevent argument injection. Note the two vulnerability ratings supplied differ in vector details: the published CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L (7.1), while the independent assessment rates AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H; both agree that no prior authentication is required but that a user must deliberately install and apply an untrusted theme.

DescriptionCVE.org

omarchy-theme-set in Omarchy 4 before 4.0.1 allows code execution via a third-party theme because the files placed into ~/.local/state/omarchy/current/theme may include executable content from an untrusted Git repository.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Omarchy developer workstations running version 4.x prior to 4.0.1 can execute attacker-supplied code as the logged-in user whenever someone installs and applies a theme from an untrusted Git repository, because themes can carry executable content rather than just appearance settings. Because Omarchy is a desktop environment for developers, the exposure is to each affected user's credentials, local files, source code, and connected tooling, not to shared production servers or root privileges. The risk is real but bounded: exploitation requires a deliberate user action, no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fixed version.
